Reading Thermostat Wiring Reference
Why this matters
Thermostat wiring is a common source of confusion + service calls. Understanding the wire color conventions + system types makes installs + diagnosis straightforward. The tech who can read + work thermostat wiring solves problems quickly. This is the field card.
Standard wire color codes
Most common (residential gas / AC system):
- R (Red): 24V power (from transformer)
- W (White): Heat call
- Y (Yellow): Cool call (compressor)
- G (Green): Fan
- C (Blue OR Black): Common (24V return)
Add for heat pump / multi-stage:
- O (Orange): Reversing valve (active in cooling mode)
- B (Blue OR Black): Reversing valve (active in heating mode)
- W2 (Dark Blue / Brown): Second-stage heat
- Y2 (Light Blue / Pink): Second-stage cool
- E (Pink): Emergency heat
- L (Brown): Service / fault light (some)
Color conventions are conventions; sometimes vary. Verify with multimeter.
System types
Conventional gas + AC:
- R, W, Y, G, C
- Standard setup
- Most common residential
Heat pump:
- R, Y, G, C
- O (cool mode reversing) OR B (heat mode reversing)
- Auxiliary heat: W (some configurations) OR E (emergency)
Hydronic (boiler):
- R, W (boiler call), C
- Sometimes G for circulator
Multi-stage:
- Y1, Y2 for cool stages
- W1, W2 for heat stages
- Sometimes more wires
Variable-speed / communicating:
- Sometimes only 2-4 wires (proprietary protocol)
- Manufacturer-specific
- Different than R, W, Y, G, C
Reading the wires
At thermostat:
- Remove cover
- Note color + terminal
- Photograph before disconnect
- Label terminals if needed
At equipment (verify):
- Sometimes wire colors don't match terminals
- Trust the function, not just color
- Test with multimeter
C-wire (common)
Function: Provides constant power for thermostat (smart, digital).
Older systems: often no C-wire
- Old mechanical thermostats didn't need
- Battery-powered new (sometimes)
- Smart thermostats need
Solutions if no C-wire:
- Pull new wire (if accessible)
- Add power adapter at thermostat
- "Add a wire" devices (some manufacturers)
- Battery-only smart thermostat (compromise)
Heat pump terminals
O vs B:
- O energizes reversing valve in COOL mode (heat = no signal)
- B energizes reversing valve in HEAT mode (cool = no signal)
- Manufacturer choice; specifically labeled
- Sometimes both terminals (depending on model)
Auxiliary heat:
- W (some systems)
- E (emergency heat)
- L (lockout indicator)
Voltage testing
Verify with multimeter:
- 24V AC at R (with C as reference)
- Voltage at each terminal during call
- W: 24V when heat called
- Y: 24V when cool called
- G: 24V when fan called
No voltage at R:
- Transformer failed
- Wire damage
- Check at equipment
Voltage at terminal but equipment doesn't respond:
- Equipment-side issue
- Wiring break
- Failed component
Common wiring problems
Wrong wire on wrong terminal:
- DIY install mistakes
- Equipment not working OR wrong mode
- Trace + verify
No C-wire (smart thermostat issue):
- Smart thermostat resets
- Loses Wi-Fi
- Won't function consistently
Broken wire (in wall):
- Continuity test
- Sometimes need to pull new wire
- Pre-existing wire path may be reusable
Crossed wires:
- Wires touching where shouldn't
- Short causing trip
- Inspect carefully
Loose connection:
- Wire not securely under terminal
- Intermittent operation
- Tighten
Adding smart thermostat (no C-wire)
Options:
1. Pull new wire:
- Best (proper installation)
- Sometimes accessible attic / basement
- Sometimes wall fish
2. Add-a-wire adapter:
- Common with smart thermostats (Nest, Ecobee included sometimes)
- Adapter at equipment converts 4-wire to 5-wire signaling
- Customer's existing wire used
3. C-wire kit:
- Some manufacturers' specific
- Easier than pulling wire
4. Battery-only smart:
- Some Ecobee, Nest models can run on R-W-Y-G
- "Power-stealing" technology
- Sometimes works; sometimes flickers
Heat pump specific wiring
Conventional thermostat on heat pump = won't work:
- Heat pump needs reversing valve signal (O OR B)
- Cool-only thermostat misses heat pump heating
- Verify thermostat is heat-pump-compatible
Modern thermostats:
- Most are heat-pump-compatible
- Configured during setup
- Per manufacturer's wiring guide
Multi-stage heating
For systems with 2-stage furnace:
- Y1 = first stage
- Y2 = second stage
- Thermostat decides when to call each
- Some thermostats lack staging capability
Dual fuel (heat pump + furnace)
Hybrid:
- Heat pump for moderate weather
- Gas furnace below balance point
- Thermostat coordinates
- More complex wiring
Wires:
- All heat pump wires
- Plus W for furnace
- Sometimes outdoor sensor wire
Variable speed / communicating
Newer systems:
- 2-wire OR 4-wire communication
- Proprietary protocol
- Not R, W, Y, G
- Different thermostats only compatible
Brands:
- Carrier "Infinity"
- Trane "ComfortLink"
- Lennox "Harmony"
- Each has specific compatible thermostat
Wiring schematic
Equipment side:
- Inside furnace OR air handler
- Often inside access panel
- Diagram shows R, W, Y, G, C, etc.
- Sometimes labeled (Y2, W2, etc.)
- Color of wire often matches code
Use schematic:
- Verify what each wire does
- Trace breaks if needed
- Configuration confirmation
When customer reports "thermostat won't turn on"
Diagnose:
- Battery dead (some battery-powered)
- No C-wire power (smart thermostat shuts down)
- HVAC fuse blown (transformer 24V protection)
- Wire break in wall (continuity test)
- Thermostat failure (replace)
When customer reports "thermostat works but HVAC doesn't respond"
Diagnose:
- Verify voltage at R (power present?)
- Verify voltage at terminals during call (W during heat, etc.)
- Check wiring at HVAC (signal arriving?)
- Check equipment (fuse, control board, transformer)
When customer reports "wrong mode" (heat instead of cool)
Diagnose:
- O / B wire on wrong terminal (heat pump)
- Thermostat config wrong
- Manual operation reveals
- Often easy fix

Common thermostat wiring mistakes
- Trusting wire color without testing
- Loose terminal connections
- Smart thermostat without C-wire
- Missing reversing valve wire (heat pump)
- DIY without understanding heat pump
- Skipping voltage verification
Heat pump install gotchas
Common issues:
- O / B confusion (which energizes which mode)
- Auxiliary heat configuration
- Outdoor sensor (some systems)
- Balance point setting
Verify after install:
- All modes work
- Aux heat triggers correctly
- Smart thermostat configured properly
