Plumbing systems vary by age + materials. The tech who can identify the era of customer's plumbing anticipates issues + recommends appropriate work. This is the field card.

Why age matters

Materials change by era:

  • Different lifespans
  • Different failure modes
  • Different code requirements

Newer = often longer life remaining Older = often material reaching end

Era-based plumbing materials

Pre-1900:

  • Lead supply pipes (health hazard)

1900-1940s:

Supply pipe identification

Galvanized steel:

  • Gray; threaded joints
  • Heavy

Copper:

  • Reddish brown; soldered joints
  • 50-100 year life with good water
  • Pinhole leaks possible (water quality)
  • Type L (residential) OR M (thinner)

PEX:

  • Flexible plastic; color-coded
  • Red = hot; blue = cold; white = either
  • 50+ year life
  • Push-fit OR crimp fittings
