Why this matters
Plumbing systems vary by age + materials. The tech who can identify the era of customer's plumbing anticipates issues + recommends appropriate work. This is the field card.
Why age matters
Materials change by era:
- Different lifespans
- Different failure modes
- Different code requirements
Newer = often longer life remaining Older = often material reaching end
Era-based plumbing materials
Pre-1900:
- Lead supply pipes (health hazard)
- Clay sewer
- Some cast iron
1900-1940s:
- Galvanized steel supply (common)
- Cast iron drain
- Lead toilet flanges + traps
- Brass fittings
1940s-1970s:
- Galvanized steel supply (continuing)

- Orangeburg sewer (1940s-1970s; failure-prone)
1970s-1990s:
- Copper supply (became standard)

1990s-2000s:
- Copper supply (still common)
- PEX supply (starting; becoming dominant)

Supply pipe identification
Galvanized steel:
- Gray; threaded joints
- Heavy
- 50-80 year life
- Often failing if pre-1960
- Rust internally; reduced flow
- Replace gradually
Copper:
- Reddish brown; soldered joints
- 50-100 year life with good water
- Pinhole leaks possible (water quality)
- Type L (residential) OR M (thinner)
PEX:
- Flexible plastic; color-coded
- Red = hot; blue = cold; white = either
- 50+ year life
- Push-fit OR crimp fittings

Polybutylene (Poly-B):
