Where homes lose energy
Typical residential energy loss breakdown:
- Heating + cooling: 50-60% (often largest)
- Water heating: 12-15%
- Lighting + appliances: 20-25%
- Other: 5-10%
For HVAC losses:
- Air leakage (drafts): 25-40%
- Insulation gaps: 15-25%
- Duct leakage: 15-30%
- Windows / doors: 10-20%
- Other: 10-20%
Addressing the biggest losses gives biggest savings.

Attic:
