MERV Ratings and Air Filtration Reference

Why this reference exists

HVAC filters are sold in 14+ MERV ratings, MPR + FPR scales, plus electrostatic + media + HEPA. Customers ask "which filter should I use?" + most techs answer "a good one" or recommend whatever's in stock. Misanswering this question loses sales + sometimes damages HVAC systems (too-restrictive filter blocks airflow). This is the working framework.

MERV scale (ASHRAE 52.2)

Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value rates a filter's ability to capture particles 0.3-10 microns:

MERV 8 is the typical base for residential. MERV 11 is the common upgrade. MERV 13 is the "post-COVID + allergy" upgrade.

MPR + FPR (alternative scales)

MPR (Microparticle Performance Rating): 3M's proprietary scale (300-2800). Loose correspondence to MERV.

FPR (Filter Performance Rating): Home Depot's scale, 4-10. Roughly MERV - 4.

Customer brings a Home Depot filter in FPR - translate to MERV before recommending.

The "too restrictive" problem

Higher MERV = denser media = more restriction = lower airflow.

Residential HVAC systems are designed for a 1" pleated filter at MERV 5-8 (low restriction). Pushing to MERV 11+ on a 1" filter creates these problems:

  • Lower airflow (CFM drops 10-20%)
  • Higher static pressure (motor strain)
  • Frozen evaporator coils (insufficient air over the coil)
  • Furnace overheating
  • Premature blower motor failure

Solution: use a thicker filter housing (4", 5", or 6" media filter). More surface area = same filtration with much lower restriction.

Box stores sell 1" MERV 13 filters that work on paper but starve the system in practice. Tell customers.

Filter housings + sizes

1" filter (standard residential): low restriction; limited MERV ceiling (MERV 8 max practical). Replace monthly.

2" filter: better; MERV 8-11 reasonable. Quarterly replacement.

4-5-6" media filter (Aprilaire, Honeywell, Trion): premium retrofit; MERV 11-13 reasonable. Replace every 6-12 months. Adds a modest amount to the install but transforms IAQ + lasts 4-6x longer.

HEPA + bypass: dedicated HEPA filter with bypass fan + ducting. Rare residential; medical-grade.

Recommend at install: a 4"-5" media housing AT MINIMUM. The customer who started with a 1" filter slot can be upgraded with a Trion or Aprilaire housing for a moderate one-time cost, and the customer never replaces another 1" filter.

Specialty filters

Activated carbon + charcoal: traps VOCs, odors, gas-phase pollutants. Use in homes with smokers, near highways, gas appliances, woodshop. Combined MERV-rated + carbon filters cost a modest amount more each than a standard filter.

Electrostatic (washable): no replacement needed. MERV 4-8 typical. Lower than disposable pleated. OK budget option; performance below pleated.

Electronic air cleaners (EAC, Honeywell F300, Trion): collect particulates on electrostatic plates. MERV 13-14 equivalent. Plates wash annually. A premium, higher-cost install relative to a media filter housing. Better than premium pleated when performance + low maintenance matter.

UV-C lights (in-duct): kills mold + bacteria on coils + in air stream. NOT a particulate filter; works WITH a filter. A moderate add-on install cost. Some controversy on residential efficacy; effective on coil + drain pan biofilm.

Service-side revenue

Filter program = predictable recurring revenue. Setup:

  • Sign customer at install
  • 6-12 month visits
  • Inspect + replace filter
  • Quick HVAC check while there
  • Service add-ons (clean drain pan, check refrigerant, etc.)
  • Priced per visit, 2-4 visits per year per customer

100 customers on this program add up to a substantial six-figure annual recurring revenue stream with zero marketing cost after the initial install.

Common pitfalls

  • MERV 13 on 1" frame: starves system, freezes coil
  • Filter installed backwards: airflow arrow on frame; verify direction
  • Wrong size: 20x25x1 vs 16x25x1 - bypass leakage
  • Filter forgotten for 18 months: dust packed in, blower failure
  • Recommending HEPA in central system: incompatible; portable HEPA is the residential answer
  • Carbon filter exhausted: still passes air, no longer traps VOCs; replace per saturation, not visual

Customer education

Talk track:

  1. "Your filter is the cheapest, easiest IAQ investment you can make."
  2. "Right now you have MERV X - that catches Y type of stuff."
  3. "Upgrading to MERV 11 or 13 catches Z - relevant for your asthma/allergy/pet."
  4. "We can upgrade your filter housing to a 4-5" media - same airflow, much better filtration, less frequent changes."
  5. "Filter delivery + service program: $X/year, never think about it."

Most customers say yes to the upgrade because it's modest cost + addresses an actual concern.

The single most useful diagnostic gadget for IAQ-focused crews: an inexpensive air quality monitor (Awair Element, Atmotube, IQAir) that the customer can see. Show the customer their PM2.5 reading before + after a 30-minute MERV 13 filtration trial. Numbers drop from 20-40 μg/m³ to under 5 μg/m³. The customer can SEE the improvement; closing on a filter housing upgrade goes from "maybe" to "yes" instantly.
