Hot Work + Fire Watch Reference
Why this matters
Hot work (welding, brazing, cutting, soldering) starts thousands of fires every year. Every welder + brazier + torch-using tech is responsible for fire prevention + fire watch. OSHA + NFPA require specific procedures. The tech who ignores them risks property damage + loss of life. This is the field card.
What counts as hot work
Activities producing flame, sparks, OR heat sufficient to ignite combustibles:
- Welding (arc, MIG, TIG, stick)
- Cutting (oxy-acetylene, plasma)
- Brazing + soldering
- Grinding (sparks)
- Torch use (heating, propane)
- Brazing copper / refrigerant lines
- Powder-actuated tools (Hilti gun)
- Roofing torch (modified bitumen)
- Concrete cutting (with sparks)

Local fire department: many jurisdictions require permits for hot work on commercial buildings.
Hot work permit (required for commercial + many residential)
Issued by: building owner OR designated hot work specialist (HWS).
Components:
- Date + time
- Location (specific area)
- Type of work
- Personnel involved
- Fire prevention measures in place
- Authorized signature
- Expiration time (typically 1 day)
Posted at work location: visible until work + fire watch complete.
Pre-hot-work checklist
Equipment in good condition: hoses, gauges, regulators, leads, tips, gun.
Combustibles removed within 35 ft (NFPA 51B), OR fire-resistant cover used.
Sparks contained: shields, fire-retardant blankets, water spray.
Fire extinguisher present (ABC class min): tested + accessible.
Fire watch person assigned: trained + extinguisher; stays during AND for 30+ min after hot work (some require 60+ min).
Ventilation: smoke + fumes; outdoor OR exhaust fan + ductwork.
Floor + wall openings sealed: prevent sparks falling to lower level.
Surroundings inspected: above, below, behind walls.
Customer informed: aware work + presence required.
35-foot rule (NFPA 51B)
Within 35 ft of hot work:
- Remove all combustibles (lumber, oil, gas, paper, etc.)
- Cover floor cracks, openings, drains
- Move flammable liquids OR provide separation
- Mop dust from floor
- Cover heat-conducting fixtures + equipment
Where 35 ft impractical (e.g., adjacent occupied space):
- Fire-retardant covers
- Continuous fire watch
- Increased ventilation
- Smoke + flame containment
Fire watch responsibilities
Watch for sparks + smoldering: hot work in progress AND for required after-period.
Have extinguisher ready: ABC class minimum; rated for the materials around.
Watch all sides of hot work: not just the immediate work area.
Watch concealed areas: smoke from wall cavity, behind plaster, under flooring.
Time required:
- During: full attention
- After: 30 min minimum (NFPA 51B); some sites require 60 - 120 min.
Personnel + extinguisher: ready until end of fire watch period.
Fire extinguisher classes
Class A: ordinary combustibles (wood, paper, fabric, plastic).
Class B: flammable liquids (gasoline, oil, grease).
Class C: electrical equipment.
Class D: combustible metals (specialty).
Class K: cooking oils + fats (kitchen).
ABC (multi-purpose): covers A + B + C; standard residential + commercial. Most-used for hot work.
Stored pressure: indicates charge level (in the green zone).
Common hot work fires
Sparks falling into wall cavity: smolder for hours, ignite drywall paper + lumber.
Sparks landing in dust: dust ignites immediately; smoldering hidden.
Sparks landing on combustibles (paper, oil rag, lumber pile): obvious; preventable with cleanup.
Sparks rolling down slope (sloped roof, sloped floor): travel beyond 35 ft.
Sparks landing on insulation in attic: smolder; ignite hours later.
Hot pipe touching wood stud during soldering: heat conducts; wood ignites.
Hot work scenarios
Brazing refrigerant lines (HVAC): nitrogen purge required; fire-retardant blanket behind work; sparks contained; customer's curtains + clothing clear. Soldering copper plumbing: solder shield / heat-resistant blanket against wall; spray bottle + wet rag; watch for hot pipe → wood transfer. Torching modified bitumen roof: sweep roof clean of combustibles; extinguishers + water on roof; fire watch from below; watch hours after (smoldering common). Welding ductwork: blanket-contained sparks; lower floor protected; fire watch in adjacent space.
PPE for hot work
Welding helmet (auto-darkening, correct shade); gauntlet leather welding gloves; welding jacket/sleeves (leather OR FR cotton); steel-toed leather boots (no synthetic); respirator (R95 OR P100 for fumes; specific cartridges per process); hearing protection (grinding, plasma).
Confined space hot work
Additional requirements:
- Confined space entry permit + procedures
- Continuous atmospheric monitoring
- Ventilation forced
- Hot work fume + oxygen monitoring
- Retrieval line + observer
Asphyxiation risk + flammable atmosphere risk = stop work; ventilate; retest.
Common hot work mistakes
Skipping the permit (commercial requirement). No fire watch (insurance + liability claim if fire). Sparks landing in unseen areas (dust, attic insulation, wall cavity). Working too close to combustibles (35-ft rule). Inadequate fire extinguisher (wrong class). Removing fire blanket too early (smoldering not yet out). Distracted fire watch (looking elsewhere). Hot work near other workers (multi-trade conflict).
Post-work inspection
Walk through immediately: any smoke OR smoldering?
Re-check 30+ min later: smoldering can take time to manifest.
Photograph + document: insurance + customer record.
Customer walkthrough: explain work + verify customer's space is undamaged.
Insurance + liability
General liability: covers fire damage from your work.
Fire damage claim: a structure fire traced to hot work can produce a claim large enough to exceed a bare-minimum policy limit + end an uninsured contractor's business.
Higher coverage limits: pro service trades doing regular hot work typically carry general liability limits well above the standard residential minimum.
Fire watch documentation: protect against claim by proving best practice followed.
Hot work tool inspection
Welding cables: insulation intact; no exposed copper.
Gas hoses: no cracks, no burns, fittings secure.
Regulators: not stuck; correct outlet pressure.
Torches: tips clean; valves operate; no leaks.
Cylinders: secured upright; chained to wall OR cart.
Cleanup: equipment after use; oil + grease off welding equipment.
Truck stock for hot work
ABC fire extinguisher (5 lb min), fire blanket (wool OR ceramic fiber), spray bottle water, welding helmet + gloves + jacket, leather sleeves, propane / MAPP torch, soldering supplies, brazing supplies, marker (note start/stop times of fire watch).
