Optimize Your Google Business Profile

Goal

Optimize your Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) to drive more service calls from local search. For residential service businesses, Google Business is the single highest-leverage marketing asset - most customer searches start with "[service] near me" and your profile is what they see first.

Prerequisites

  • A claimed + verified Google Business Profile (free; sign up at business.google.com)
  • Admin access OR be the owner
  • 60-90 minutes for initial optimization; ongoing weekly maintenance ~15 min

Steps

  1. Verify your profile is COMPLETE. Google rewards completeness:
  • Business name (exact + consistent across all listings)
  • Address (or "service area" for trades that don't have walk-in)
  • Phone (one number; not multiple)
  • Website
  • Hours (include holiday hours)
  • Service area (if applicable - list specific ZIP codes or radius)
  1. Pick the RIGHT primary category. This is the single highest-impact decision:
  • "Plumber" not "Plumbing service"
  • "HVAC contractor" or "Heating and air conditioning service"
  • Be SPECIFIC; the wrong category prevents you from appearing for relevant searches
  1. Add secondary categories for everything else you do:
  • HVAC contractor + Plumber + Furnace repair service
  • Don't add irrelevant ones (you don't want to be in "Lawn care" searches if you're HVAC)
  1. Add ALL services you offer under the Services section:
  • Be specific: "Furnace repair", "AC tune-up", "Heat pump installation"
  • Each service should have a description (50-200 words)
  • Include pricing if you can stick to a range
  1. Upload photos. This is HIGH-impact:
  • Logo (square; high resolution)
  • Cover photo (your truck or team)
  • Interior (if you have a showroom or office)
  • Team photos
  • Work examples (before/after; install completions)
  • Equipment (your trucks, your tools)
  • Upload 10-30 photos initially; add 1-2/week thereafter
  1. Set up posts. Google Business posts appear in search results:
  • Weekly posts showing recent work, customer reviews, seasonal tips
  • What's new posts for promotions or new services
  • Event posts for limited-time offers
  1. Encourage reviews systematically:
  • Send review-request email after every completed job
  • Make it easy: direct link to your Google review form
  • Aim for 50+ reviews to start, growing 5-10/month
  1. Respond to EVERY review within 48 hours:
  • 5-star: thank them by name; mention specific aspect of the job
  • 4-star: thank them; ask what would make it 5-star
  • 3-star or below: respond professionally; offer to resolve offline; never argue
  1. Use Google Q&A. Pre-populate common questions:
  • "Do you offer emergency service?"
  • "What's the pricing for [common service]?"
  • "What areas do you serve?"
  • Answer these yourself so future customers see the answers
  1. Keep your profile fresh. Google's algorithm rewards activity:
  • Weekly posts
  • Monthly photo uploads
  • Review responses
  • Updated service descriptions

Verification

  • Profile completeness shows 100% in Google Business dashboard
  • Profile appearing in "service near me" searches for your primary keyword
  • Reviews growing month over month
  • Click-to-call rate from profile is healthy (Google shows this stat)

Troubleshooting

  • Profile not appearing in local search: usually a category issue; verify primary category is most specific match for your service
  • Reviews aren't growing: review-request email isn't going out OR isn't optimized; verify it's automated + has direct review link
  • Negative reviews showing up: respond professionally; don't engage in arguments; ask the customer to contact you offline to resolve
  • Multiple profiles for the same business: claim them all + request merge with Google Business support

The single highest-impact thing you can do for Google Business is GET MORE REVIEWS than your competitors. Quantity + recency both matter. If you have 50 reviews + your competitor has 200, customers will trust them more. Building review velocity (5-10/month consistent) is more impactful than any other single tactic.
