Garbage Disposal Replacement Reference
Why this matters
A disposal swap is one of the cleanest 30-minute plumbing jobs when the existing mount matches, and a 90-minute job when it doesn't. The two things that turn it into a callback: forgetting to knock out the dishwasher inlet plug before installing, and using the wrong mounting hardware between brands. Both are easy to avoid if you know to check.
Disposal types and HP
1/3 HP - budget, slow grind, jam-prone. Avoid for daily use. Acceptable only on a vacation rental or rarely used kitchen.
1/2 HP - entry-level. OK for light use, single-person households. InSinkErator Badger 1, Waste King 1001.
3/4 HP - residential standard. Quieter, faster, handles vegetable scraps and small bones reasonably. InSinkErator Badger 5, Pro 250, Waste King L-3200.
1 HP - premium. Multi-stage grind for finer particles, much quieter. InSinkErator Evolution Excel, Waste King Legend 8000.
Match HP to household size and use pattern. Customer who runs a vegetable-heavy household with a 1/3 HP unit will be back in 2 years; 3/4 HP gives reasonable lifespan and noise tolerance.
Mount types - the compatibility question
InSinkErator 3-bolt EZ-Mount - the most common residential mount. Bayonet ring on the upper mount; rotate the disposal a few degrees to lock. Most InSinkErator units and many compatible-branded ones use this.
Waste King EZ-Mount / Anaheim - similar 3-bolt approach but bolt spacing and ring geometry differ slightly. Not directly interchangeable with InSinkErator without changing the upper mount.
Whirlpool/Whirlaway - uses a similar 3-bolt with their own bracket dimensions.
Universal mount - some replacement disposals ship with adapters that fit InSinkErator OR Waste King mounts. Read the box.
When the brand changes: plan to replace the whole mount assembly, not just the unit. Adds 15-20 minutes - you'll be removing the old sink flange, scraping plumber's putty, installing new sink flange and bracket.
Electrical configurations
Two ways the disposal is wired:
- Cord-and-plug - disposal plugs into a switched outlet under the sink. The outlet is controlled by a wall switch. Most modern installs.
- Hardwired - 14/2 NM-B cable from a switched wall switch directly into the disposal's electrical compartment. More common in older installs and parts of the country.
Most disposals ship WITHOUT a cord. You either buy a cord kit (typical) or hardwire.
Code points:
- Disposal circuit is typically dedicated 15A or 20A (NEC 422.16 allows dedicated, doesn't strictly require)
- Disposal circuit is NOT required to be GFCI-protected when on its own dedicated circuit, even within 6 ft of a sink (NEC 210.8 has the dedicated-appliance exception for non-receptacle disposal connections)
- A switched outlet under the sink for disposal cord is its own circuit; whether that outlet is GFCI required depends on the local AHJ interpretation
- A disposal sharing a circuit with the dishwasher needs proper sizing - usually 20A and the manufacturer needs to allow shared circuit (some do, some don't)
Drain connection
- Standard discharge tube comes off the bottom of the disposal, 90° or straight depending on plumbing
- Slip-nut connection to the P-trap, 1-1/2" trap arm
- Sometimes an extension tube is needed if the P-trap is offset
The dishwasher knockout - every disposal has a plug inside the dishwasher inlet that must be knocked out BEFORE the disposal is mounted IF a dishwasher will be connected. Forget this step and water from the dishwasher has nowhere to go.
Replacement procedure
Time: 30-45 min same brand, 60-90 min cross-brand or sink-flange replacement.
Tools and materials:
- Replacement disposal (HP and brand to suit)
- Cord kit if needed (3-prong 16-3 typical)
- Wire nuts (yellow for 14 AWG)
- Plumber's putty (Oatey or similar) - NOT silicone (silicone hardens, future removal is a fight)
- Channel-lock pliers or large slip-joint pliers
- Phillips and flat screwdrivers
- 1/4" hex bit or Allen wrench (for some mount tightening)
- Voltage tester
- Bucket and rags (water in the trap drains when you disconnect)
- Possibly: new sink flange + mounting hardware kit if cross-brand swap
Steps:
Kill power at the breaker. Verify dead at the switched cord or wall switch with a non-contact voltage tester AND a contact meter to ground.
Disconnect the dishwasher hose (if connected) from the disposal's dishwasher inlet. Have a rag - there's usually some residual water in the hose.
Disconnect the drain. Loosen the slip nut on the discharge tube where it joins the P-trap. Have your bucket; the trap dumps a cup or so of water.
Support the disposal with one hand. With the other, use a 1/4" Allen wrench in the mount tab (InSinkErator) or rotate the lower bracket lugs counterclockwise (Waste King) to release the bayonet. The disposal drops free - it's heavy (1/3 HP ≈ 13 lb, 1 HP ≈ 19 lb). Don't let it fall on the cabinet floor.
Set the old unit aside in a tray. If hardwired, disconnect at the electrical compartment first.
Decide: keep old mount or replace?
- Same brand and mount looks clean: keep the old mount. Skip to step 12.
- Cross-brand or mount looks corroded / damaged: replace the mount.
If replacing mount: from above the sink, loosen the sink-flange nut underneath, lift the flange out of the sink. Scrape the old plumber's putty off the sink with a plastic putty knife. Clean the area with rubbing alcohol.
New sink flange: roll a thick rope of plumber's putty about 1/2" diameter. Wrap it around the underside of the new flange's lip. Press the flange firmly into the sink hole.
From under the sink: apply the rubber gasket, backup ring, and mounting ring per the disposal manufacturer's instructions. Tighten the mounting screws evenly until the flange is snug against the sink, plumber's putty has squeezed out slightly. Wipe excess putty.
Snap on the snap ring (the metal C-clip that holds the assembly together). This is fiddly - push down on the mounting ring with one hand while spreading the snap ring with the other. Practice.
Sink flange is now installed; the disposal will hang from this assembly.
Knock out the dishwasher plug (if the customer has a dishwasher OR may have one in the future). Set the disposal upside down. The plug is inside the dishwasher inlet hole. Use a flat screwdriver and a hammer - sharp tap, the plug pops out into the disposal grinding chamber. CRITICAL: retrieve the plug from inside the disposal before mounting, or it will jam the impellers on first use.
