Common Transformers Reference
Why this matters
Transformers step voltage up OR down for specific loads. Burned 24V control transformer on furnace = no heat OR cool. Doorbell transformer fail = no doorbell. The tech who diagnoses + replaces correctly restores service quickly. This is the field card.
Transformer basics
Function: changes voltage between primary + secondary windings.
Step-down: primary higher voltage than secondary (240V → 24V).
Step-up: primary lower voltage than secondary (rare residential).
Voltage ratio: equal to turns ratio (primary turns / secondary turns).
Power balance: VA in = VA out (minus losses).
Common residential transformer types
Doorbell: 120V → 16 OR 24V; mounted in basement OR utility room.
HVAC control (24V): 120/240V → 24V; mounted in air handler OR furnace control box.
Garage door opener: integrated; 24V control circuit.
Security system: 120V → 16 OR 24V.
Landscape lighting: 120V → 12V; outdoor-rated transformer.
LED transformer (low-voltage lighting): 120V → 12V OR 24V DC.
HID lighting ballast (older): ballast transformer for fluorescent + HID.
HVAC 24V control transformer
Typical capacity: 40, 50, 75, OR 100 VA.
Sizing rule: VA = sum of all 24V loads (controls, contactors, valves, board).
40 VA: simple system (single-stage furnace OR AC).
75 VA: typical residential with 2-stage OR multi-zone.
100 VA: complex system OR commercial.
Fuse: 3A glass fuse on most modern furnaces; trips before transformer burns.
Transformer diagnostics
Primary voltage check: 120V OR 240V at primary terminals (matches feed).
Secondary voltage check: 24V at secondary terminals; varies 22 - 28V acceptable.
Resistance test (cold + de-energized):
- Primary winding: 50 - 200 Ω typical
- Secondary winding: 1 - 10 Ω typical
- Open winding = ∞ Ω (burned)
- Short = 0 Ω
Heat / burned smell: transformer overloaded OR shorted secondary.
Fuse blown: short circuit downstream; replace fuse + investigate.
Replacement workflow
- Power off + LOTO
- Identify cause of failure (don't replace without root cause)
- Match capacity (VA), primary voltage, mounting style
- Disconnect old transformer
- Install new + secure wiring
- Restore power + verify voltage
- Test downstream operation
Common transformer failure causes
Short circuit downstream: customer's miswiring OR damaged thermostat wire shorts secondary → primary overloads → burned coil.
Continuous overload: too many loads; sized too small.
Lightning surge: induced surge burns primary OR secondary.
Heat damage: enclosed space OR ambient temp too high.
Aging: insulation breakdown over years.
Doorbell transformer
Common sizes: 16V OR 24V; 10 - 20 VA.
Mounted location: basement panel area, utility room, OR garage.
Wired: 120V from panel; bell wire (18 AWG) to chime + button.
Smart doorbell (Ring, Nest, etc.): may require higher VA + chime kit OR remove chime.
Smart doorbell upgrade
Existing doorbell transformer: 16V often inadequate for smart camera.
Common required: 16V at 30 VA OR 24V at 40 VA for Ring/Nest with camera.
Solution if undersized:
- Replace transformer (40 VA OR 50 VA)
- Add chime kit (resistor to balance circuit)
- Hardwire bypass chime
Wireless doorbell: battery; no transformer issue.
Landscape lighting transformer
Outdoor-rated enclosure: typically wall-mounted; some buried.
Sizing: sum of all light wattage + 20% buffer.
Common sizes: 100W, 300W, 600W.
Multi-tap: 12V, 13V, 14V, 15V outputs to compensate for long-run voltage drop.
Common brands: Kichler, FX Luminaire, Hinkley.
Failures: corroded internal connections, water intrusion.
LED transformer (driver)
For 12V OR 24V LED lighting.
Constant-voltage: standard.
Constant-current: for specific LED arrays.
Dimming: PWM-compatible drivers for dimmable LEDs.
Common locations: behind cabinets, in soffit, ceiling.
Failures: capacitor failure, heat damage.
Step-up transformers (rare residential)
Used for:
- 120V appliance in 240V country (not typical residential)
- Some scientific equipment
- Audio amplifiers
Industrial: 480V from 240V; rare.
Common transformer mistakes
Skipping root cause (replace transformer; downstream short returns + blows new transformer immediately). Undersizing (VA insufficient; overheats). Wrong primary voltage (120V transformer on 240V = burns immediately). Wrong secondary voltage (wrong control circuit voltage). Mounting in heat-restricted location (overheats).
Multi-tap transformer
Primary multi-tap: same transformer accepts 120V OR 240V (selectable).
Secondary multi-tap: multiple voltage outputs (12V, 16V, 24V common doorbell + low-voltage lighting).
Useful for: stocking common transformer; flexibility on install.
Truck stock
Universal 40 + 75 VA 24V control transformer; doorbell 16V transformer; transformer fuses (3A glass + 5A glass); multimeter (test primary + secondary); voltage tester (verify dead).
Common service-call scenarios
No heat OR cool, no thermostat response: 24V transformer blown; check + replace; investigate downstream short.
Doorbell silent: transformer dead; chime stuck; button stuck; bell wire cut.
Landscape lights dim OR flickering: voltage drop; multi-tap to higher voltage OR replace transformer.
Smart doorbell drops Wi-Fi: undersized transformer; upgrade VA.
LED strip flickers: driver failing; replace.
Voltage compatibility
120V appliance plugged into 240V outlet: device burns immediately.
240V appliance on 120V outlet: device runs at half capacity OR not at all (motors burn).
Transformer steps appropriate voltage: matches load requirement.
Capacitor in transformer (some types)
Many residential transformers: simple coil-only; no capacitor.
Older "constant voltage" transformers: capacitor inside for voltage regulation.
Failure of capacitor: erratic secondary voltage.
Power supply (DC outputs)
Often called "transformer" but more accurately a power supply:
- Bridge rectifier + filter + regulator
- Converts AC to DC at low voltage
- Used in: alarm systems, security cameras, low-voltage controllers
- VA + DC current rating
Switching power supply (modern): smaller + lighter + more efficient than transformer.
The single most-impactful transformer habit is the IDENTIFY THE DOWNSTREAM SHORT before replacing. Customer's "burned transformer" - replace it, energize, blows again in 5 seconds. That's because the downstream short is still present. Trace the secondary wiring + look for: damaged thermostat wire chafed by sharp metal, shorted contactor coil, blown control board with shorted output, water-damaged thermostat. Fix the cause + the new transformer survives. Skipping = repeated transformer calls + customer trust damage.
