Common Electric Motor Types Reference
Why this matters
HVAC blowers, condenser fans, garage door openers, pump motors, washing machines - every service trade deals with motors. Wrong motor = wrong direction OR wrong RPM OR burned coil. The tech who diagnoses motor + selects replacement correctly saves customer time + money. This is the field card.
Motor classification
By power source: AC (alternating current) vs DC (direct current).
By phase: single-phase (residential) vs 3-phase (commercial / industrial).
By construction: open frame, totally enclosed (TEFC), explosion-proof, washdown.
By application: capacitor-start, capacitor-run, shaded-pole, ECM (electronically commutated), etc.
Single-phase AC motors
Shaded-pole: simplest + cheapest; 1/100 - 1/4 HP; low torque + low efficiency (20 - 40%); bath fans, small blowers, light appliances.
Permanent split capacitor (PSC): run capacitor only; 1/8 - 1 HP; 50 - 60% efficiency; HVAC blower motors (older), fan motors. Most common HVAC install base 2025.
Capacitor-start induction-run (CSIR): start cap disengages once at speed; high starting torque; compressors, refrigerators (older), well pumps.
Capacitor-start capacitor-run (CSCR): both start + run caps; smoother + higher efficiency; premium compressors.
Split-phase: no capacitor; phase shift via winding resistance; 1/4 - 1/2 HP; low torque; washing machines.
Universal (AC/DC): high RPM (10,000+ no load); tools, vacuums, small appliances; brushed (brushes wear).
ECM (Electronically Commutated Motor)
DC motor with built-in inverter: AC input converted to DC; controls speed precisely.
Used in: modern HVAC blowers, condenser fans (variable-speed), some appliances.
Pros: ultra-efficient (75 - 95%); variable speed; long life; quiet.
Cons: expensive; electronics-sensitive; specific replacement.
Common HVAC ECM: Genteq, Regal Beloit, Carrier Greenspeed motors.
Diagnosis: ECM motor + control board work together; failure in either causes blower issue. Often requires diagnostic codes from system.
3-phase AC motors
Used in commercial + industrial: more efficient + smoother than single-phase.
Self-starting (no capacitor needed; phase rotation creates field).
Reversing: swap any 2 leads = rotation direction reverses.
Common voltages: 208V, 240V, 480V, 600V.
DC motors
Permanent magnet DC: small motors; tools, automotive blower, appliances.
Brushless DC (BLDC): similar to ECM; electronic commutation; long life.
Stepper: precise position control; 3D printers, CNC.
Motor nameplate data
Every motor has nameplate (label) showing:
- HP (horsepower) OR W (watts)
- V (voltage)
- A (amperage)
- Hz (frequency, 60 Hz US)
- RPM
- Service factor (SF; multiplier above nameplate for continuous OK use)
- Frame size (NEMA standard)
- Phase (1 OR 3)
- Class B/F/H (temperature insulation rating)
- Enclosure (open, TEFC, etc.)
Common HVAC motor specs
Blower motor (residential, typical):
- PSC: 1/4 - 1 HP, 115V OR 230V, 1075 RPM (3-speed common: low/med/high)
- ECM: variable RPM, soft start, ESP-aware
Condenser fan motor:
- PSC: 1/8 - 1/2 HP, 230V, 825 - 1075 RPM
- Some single-speed, some 2-speed (high efficiency)
Compressor motor:
- Scroll OR reciprocating, integrated with compressor
- Pulled from line when contactor closes
- Direct-drive
Capacitors
Run capacitor: continuously energized; typical 5 - 75 μF.
Start capacitor: briefly energized; typical 50 - 300 μF.
Dual capacitor (multi-section): one canister with multiple capacitances; common HVAC compressor + fan capacitor.
Failed cap symptoms: motor hums but won't spin; weak start; reduced speed; overheats.
Test capacitor: capacitance meter; should read within 6% of nameplate.
Direction (rotation) of motor
Looking at shaft end:
- CW (clockwise) OR CCW (counterclockwise)
- Some motors reversible (swap leads)
- Some motors fixed direction
HVAC blowers: matching wheel + housing dictates direction; pump motors typically marked.
Reverse 3-phase: swap any 2 of 3 leads.
Single-phase: usually built-in connection diagram to reverse; some PSC are unidirectional.
Frame sizes (NEMA standard)
Number correlates to physical size:
- 48Y: small fan motor
- 56: 1/2 - 3/4 HP common
- 143T - 184T: small commercial
- 254 - 256: 5 - 7.5 HP
- 365 - 405: 30 - 50 HP
Bolt pattern + shaft size: standard within frame size.
Match exact frame size for replacement: bolt pattern + shaft must match.
Service factor (SF)
SF 1.0: nameplate is maximum; no overload tolerance.
SF 1.15: 15% overload OK continuously.
SF 1.25 OR higher: high-end industrial; long-term overload OK.
Don't continuously run above SF: shortened life + heat.
Motor enclosure types
ODP (open drip-proof): ventilated; drip-resistant. Indoor + dry.
TEFC (totally enclosed, fan-cooled): sealed + external fan; outdoor / dusty.
Explosion-proof (XP): hazardous areas (gas, dust); built per NEC 500 series.
Washdown: stainless / sealed for food + sanitation.
Common motor failures
Bearing failure: noise; vibration; eventual seizure. Most-common HVAC blower failure.
Capacitor failure: motor won't start OR hums + heats.
Burned winding: open OR shorted; tests with multimeter (resistance reading).
Overheating: dust buildup, lubrication failure, overload.
Mechanical (broken belt OR coupling): not really motor; check drive system first.
Diagnosis sequence
- Power off + lock out
- Visual inspection (burned smell, discoloration)
- Spin freely by hand?
- Multimeter resistance: winding-to-winding (some Ω); winding-to-ground (∞ Ω)
- Capacitor test (if applicable)
- Voltage at motor terminals when called (correct voltage?)
- Amp draw under load (within nameplate?)
- Replace + verify operation
Replacement workflow
- Photo of existing wiring + label
- Match nameplate: HP, RPM, voltage, frame size, phase, rotation
- Match capacitor (if applicable)
- Match shaft diameter + key
- Match mounting (bolt pattern, shaft length)
- Re-wire per diagram
- Test rotation + amp draw
- Lubricate per manufacturer (most modern: sealed)
Universal vs OEM replacement
OEM (original equipment manufacturer): exact match; higher cost.
Universal (Fasco, Mars, US Motors): cross-references to many OEM; lower cost; may need slight modification.
For HVAC service: universal common; verify spec.
For appliances: often OEM preferred (precise match).
Truck stock
PSC blower motor (1/4, 1/3, 1/2 HP common); condenser fan motor; capacitor assortment (5/10/15/20/30/45 μF run; 50/100/200 μF start); motor terminal connectors + insulators; multi-purpose lithium grease (sealed motors OK; oil ports rare).
