Common Flow Rates + Capacity Reference

Why this matters

Plumber sizes water heater needs to know peak flow demand. HVAC tech sizes ductwork needs CFM at registers. Pool service sizes pump needs GPM through filter. Lawn care designs irrigation needs GPM at each zone. Knowing typical flow rates per fixture / appliance / device is the foundation for proper sizing. This is the card.

Water flow rates (GPM)

Residential fixtures (per IPC): bathroom lavatory faucet 1.0 - 1.5; kitchen sink 1.5 - 2.2; standard showerhead 1.8 - 2.5; low-flow showerhead 1.5 (max per code); bath tub fill 4 - 8; toilet flush 1.28 GPF (modern); dishwasher 1.0 - 2.5 per cycle; washing machine fill 6 - 10; hose bib (3/4") 7 - 10; whole-house water filter up to 10.

Sizing peak demand: diversity factor - not all fixtures simultaneous. Sample 2-bath residence with kitchen sink + dishwasher: theoretical max 8 - 10 GPM, realistic peak 4 - 7 GPM. Water service line: 3/4" up to 12 GPM, 1" up to 25, 1-1/4" up to 40.

Water heater capacity

Tank water heaters (recovery rate): 40-gal electric (4500W) 21 GPH at 90°F rise; 50-gal electric 21 - 25; 40-gal gas 35 - 40; 50-gal gas 40 - 50; 75-gal gas 60 - 75. Tankless (instant flow): small 140K BTU 4 - 5 GPM @ 70°F rise; mid 180K BTU 6 - 8 GPM; large 200K BTU 8 - 10 GPM; multi-tankless 12 - 20 GPM. Sizing tankless: peak GPM demand at design rise.

Air flow rates (CFM)

Residential HVAC: 1 ton AC 400 CFM; 3 ton 1,200; 5 ton 2,000. Bath exhaust 50 - 110; kitchen exhaust 100 - 600 (range hood); dryer 150 - 200; crawl space vent 50 - 100; whole-house ventilation 50 - 150 (ASHRAE 62.2). Rule of thumb: 400 CFM per ton of cooling.

Round duct CFM capacity (at 0.08" w.c. static): 4" → 30; 5" → 55; 6" → 90; 7" → 135; 8" → 195; 10" → 320; 12" → 475; 14" → 690; 16" → 935. Rectangular: use ACCA Manual D tables.

Pool flow rates

Typical pool flow (turnover):

  • 12,000 - 15,000 gallon pool: 35 - 50 GPM pump
  • 20,000 gallon pool: 50 - 75 GPM pump
  • 30,000 gallon pool: 75 - 100 GPM pump

Turnover time: pool volume / pump flow (in minutes).

Target turnover: 6 - 8 hours (turn over entire pool volume).

Filter capacity matters: most filters work best at design flow rate.

Irrigation flow rates

Spray heads (popups):

  • 0.5 GPM each (low-flow MP rotator)
  • 1.5 GPM each (4" pop-up fixed spray)
  • 3 - 4 GPM each (6" pop-up spray)

Rotors (rotating spray):

  • 1.5 - 3 GPM each
  • Larger coverage area than fixed sprays

Drip irrigation:

  • 0.5 - 4 GPH (gallons per HOUR) per emitter
  • Much lower flow rate
  • More efficient water use

Sample zone:

  • 6 fixed spray heads at 2 GPM = 12 GPM zone
  • 4 rotors at 2.5 GPM = 10 GPM zone
  • Drip zone: typically 5 - 30 emitters per zone

Pump sizing

Submersible well pump: 5 GPM small residential, 10 GPM typical, 15 - 25 large residential, 25+ commercial/irrigation. Booster pump: increases flow/pressure, sized to demand. Sump pump: 1/3 HP ~35 GPM, 1/2 HP ~65 GPM, 3/4 HP ~80 GPM, 1 HP ~100 GPM. Match pump to demand + lift (vertical height).

Compressed air: recovery machine 1 - 3 CFM displacement; vacuum pump 5 CFM standard 2-stage for HVAC evacuation; air compressor 1 HP ~4 CFM @ 90 PSI, 2 HP ~8, 5 HP ~18, 10 HP ~35.

Pressure ↔ flow relationships

Standard residential:

  • Static water pressure: 40 - 80 PSI
  • Static flow at single fixture: per fixture rating
  • Dynamic pressure (flowing): drops 5 - 20 PSI from static

Pressure drop sources:

  • Pipe friction (length × diameter related)
  • Elevation (1 ft head = 0.434 PSI)
  • Fittings + valves
  • Restrictors (low-flow heads)

Pump curves: flow at given pressure; reduce flow as pressure increases.

Sample calculations

Q: Pool turnover with 50 GPM pump on 20,000-gallon pool?

A: 20,000 / 50 = 400 minutes / 60 = 6.67 hours. Acceptable (target 6 - 8 hours).

Q: Can 1/2" water line supply two bathroom + kitchen sink simultaneously?

A: Peak demand ~ 6 - 8 GPM. 1/2" line carries ~ 4 - 6 GPM at typical residential pressure. Marginal - may experience pressure drop. 3/4" preferred.

Q: Bath exhaust fan sized for what bath?

A: ASHRAE recommends 1 CFM per sq ft floor area. 80 sq ft bath = 80 CFM minimum. 110 CFM common standard.

Q: Range hood for 6-burner gas range?

A: 100 CFM per 12" of stove width. 36" stove = 300 CFM minimum; 60" stove = 600 CFM.

Velocity in pipes (rule of thumb)

Water pipes: 5 - 8 ft/sec velocity ideal.

Above 8 ft/sec: noise, erosion, water hammer risk.

Below 3 ft/sec: deposits form.

Air ducts (residential):

  • Supply at register: 500 - 700 fpm
  • Trunk duct: 600 - 800 fpm
  • Return duct: 500 - 700 fpm
  • Above these speeds: noise

Refrigerant flow (HVAC)

Refrigerant flow per ton:

  • 0.1 - 0.2 lb/min per ton of cooling
  • Specific to refrigerant type

Suction line velocity:

  • 700 - 1,500 ft/min ideal
  • Below 700: oil settles
  • Above 1,500: pressure drop excessive

Conversion shortcuts

  • 1 GPM = 60 gallons per hour (GPH)
  • 1 GPM = 1,440 gallons per day (GPD)
  • 1 CFM = 60 cubic feet per hour
  • 1 cubic foot water = 7.48 gallons
  • 1 gallon water = 0.134 cubic feet
  • 1 gallon water = 8.34 lbs

Common flow mistakes

Undersized pipe: customer's shower runs cold when dishwasher runs.

Wrong pump for application: insufficient flow OR pressure.

Skipping pressure-drop calc on long runs: insufficient flow at fixture.

Wrong-size duct: low CFM at remote rooms.

Filter clogs: flow rate drops; system underperforms.

Pool pump too large: cavitation + filter damage.

Irrigation zones too large: pressure drops below sprinkler-head spec.

The single most-useful flow calculation habit is the WORST-CASE PEAK DEMAND. Don't size for average; size for peak. Customer's morning routine: shower + lav + kitchen sink + dishwasher + laundry simultaneously = 12 - 18 GPM. Sizing for average 4 GPM = customer complaints. Sizing for worst-case = robust system. Slight oversizing is cheaper than re-doing because of complaints; the design margin is the customer satisfaction margin.
