Common Construction Adhesives Reference
Why this matters
Adhesives bond materials where mechanical fasteners aren't ideal: panels, trim, flooring, drywall, mirrors. Wrong adhesive = bond fails OR damages material. The tech who knows adhesives for each application installs correctly + lasts decades. This is the field card.
Adhesive categories
Construction adhesive (PL Premium, Liquid Nails): thick paste; tube; framing + subflooring + paneling.
Wood glue (PVA, polyurethane): water-based; furniture + cabinet + interior wood.
Contact cement: applied both sides + dry; instant bond on contact. Laminate, leather, fabric.
Cyanoacrylate (super glue): instant; small repairs; not structural.
Epoxy (2-part): very strong; metal + concrete + structural.
Silicone: flexible; seal + glass + bath.
Caulk + sealant: gap-filling + sealing; not structural.
Hot glue: temporary OR craft; not structural.
Construction adhesive (subfloor, panel)
PL Premium: polyurethane-based; strong + water-resistant; common.
Liquid Nails: latex-based + solvent-based versions; common consumer.
Loctite Power Grab: latex grip + instant bond.
Use for: subfloor adhesive (along with screws), panel install (PVC trim, beadboard, paneling), drywall to studs (less common than screws).
Cure: 24 - 48 hr full; partial in 2 - 4 hr.
Application: 1/4" - 3/8" bead with caulking gun.
Cleanup: solvent OR scrape (per type).
Wood glue
PVA (polyvinyl acetate) - yellow / white wood glue:
- Common: Titebond Original, Elmer's Wood Glue
- Interior use only (water-soluble)
- Squeezes out; clamping helps; 30 - 60 min set
- Stronger than wood once cured
- Sandable, paintable
PVA Type II (Titebond II): water-resistant; outdoor lower-stress use.
PVA Type III (Titebond III): waterproof; outdoor + marine.
Polyurethane (Gorilla Glue Original):
- Expands as cures (foam)
- Waterproof
- Strong on porous + dissimilar materials
- 1 - 2 hr set; 24 hr cure
- Wear gloves (stains skin)
Hide glue (traditional): hot OR liquid; furniture repair; reversible with heat.
Contact cement
Both sides applied + dried before joining.
Instant bond on contact: cannot reposition.
Use for: laminate (Formica), veneer, vinyl, leather, fabric.
Brand: DAP Weldwood, 3M, Lepage.
Solvent-based: more aggressive; ventilation required.
Water-based: slower; less odor; less aggressive bond.
Cyanoacrylate (CA / super glue)
Instant bond on dry surface.
Brittle: not for high-stress.
Common use: jewelry, plastic, ceramic small repairs, sealing electronics.
Don't use on: structural OR load-bearing.
Activator spray (kicker): instant cure.
Brand: Krazy Glue, Loctite Super Glue, Starbond.
Epoxy (2-part)
Resin + hardener: mix in equal parts.
5-min epoxy: quick set; small repairs.
Standard 24-hr epoxy: full strength.
Marine epoxy: waterproof; outdoor.
Concrete bonding epoxy: bond concrete patch.
Metal-bonding epoxy: J-B Weld + similar.
Strongest adhesive available: when properly cured.
Mixing matters: incorrect ratio doesn't cure.
Silicone (sealant + adhesive)
Pure silicone (100%): bath / kitchen sealant; aquarium-safe versions.
Modified silicone (some chemistry mixed in): easier paint adhesion.
Hybrid silicone polymer (Polyseamseal): balance properties.
Use as adhesive for: glass to glass / metal, mirrors, low-stress bonding.
Cure: 24 - 72 hr depending on humidity.
Don't use: above wet location (mold), in food contact without rating.
Polyurethane sealant / adhesive
Sikaflex, Bostik Pro-MS: flexible structural; outdoor; durable.
Marine adhesive (3M 5200, 4200): bonds anything to anything.
Use: roof penetrations, exterior caulking, marine, automotive.
Cure: 24 - 72 hr.
Stronger than silicone: but harder to remove if needed later.

Specific applications
Subfloor (plywood/OSB to joists): PL Premium beads + ring-shank nails OR construction screws. Drywall to studs: panel adhesive (Liquid Nails HD); typically with screws. Crown molding/trim: subfloor adhesive bead OR finish nailer. Mirror to wall: mirror-rated adhesive (Bostik Liquid Nails Mirror); not general adhesive (silver coating). Cabinet box: PVA wood glue + dado/dowel/pocket screw. Cabinet to wall: screws to studs. Laminate countertop: contact cement. Acrylic/fiberglass tub surround: silicone OR mirror adhesive. Concrete crack: epoxy injection (deep); polyurethane sealant (surface). Brick/stone veneer: thinset mortar + mechanical fasteners. Carpet padding: foam-back adhesive OR staples. Vinyl plank: pressure-sensitive (peel-stick) OR floating. LVT: spread-applied OR loose-lay. Hardwood: nail (3/4") OR adhesive (engineered).
Common adhesive mistakes
Wrong adhesive (silicone for structural; PVA outdoors). Skipping surface prep (must be clean + dry + free of grease). Insufficient cure time (load before fully cured fails). Wrong application thickness (too thin = weak; too thick = squeeze-out + waste). Mixing incompatible products (PVA + silicone won't bond to each other). Skipping clamping on PVA wood glue. Bad cleanup (cured residue impossible to remove later).
Surface preparation
Clean: free of dust, grease, oil.
Dry: moisture interferes with most adhesives (water-based glues OK on damp wood).
Sand if needed: rough surface for mechanical key on smooth materials.
Solvent wipe: alcohol OR acetone before adhesive (per adhesive spec).
Compatible materials: some adhesives don't bond specific plastics OR coated surfaces.
Cleanup
Solvent-based: mineral spirits OR designated solvent.
Water-based (PVA): damp cloth before set; scraping after.
Silicone: dry scrape after; specialty silicone remover available.
Construction adhesive (PL Premium): scrape cured + sand; difficult.
Hot melt: heat + scrape OR alcohol.
Storage + shelf life
Sealed tubes: 1 - 2 years.
Opened: cap tightly; some types skin over within weeks.
Temperature: cool + dry; freezing damages water-based.
Hot truck in summer: shortens life.
Common service-trade applications
HVAC: mastic-style duct sealing; foil tape; minimal adhesive otherwise.
Plumbing: PVC primer + cement (chemical weld; NOT adhesive); thread sealant.
Electrical: low usage; cable strain relief; sealing entry points.
