Battery Tool Runtime + Platform Reference
Why this matters
Modern tradesmen depend on cordless tools. Choosing the right battery platform (DeWalt, Milwaukee, Makita, Bosch, etc.) is a multi-thousand-dollar decision - once invested in a battery platform, you're committed for years. Running out of battery mid-job costs time + customer's confidence. Knowing the runtime + battery characteristics maximizes productive time. This is the field card.
Battery basics
Lithium-ion dominates cordless tools 2010+. Replaced NiCad + NiMH.
Voltage (nominal):
- 12V: light-duty (drivers, screw guns)
- 18V / 20V Max: standard professional (most tools)
- 36V / 40V: heavy-duty (some outdoor equipment)
- 60V / 80V / 120V: heaviest-duty cordless
Amp-hours (Ah) = battery capacity:
- 1.5 Ah: small, light, short runtime
- 3.0 Ah: standard
- 4.0 - 5.0 Ah: long runtime, professional
- 6.0 - 9.0 Ah: extended runtime
- 12.0 Ah: premium, expensive, heavy
Watt-hours (Wh) = V × Ah: total energy. Better runtime comparison than Ah alone.

Milwaukee M18 (most popular pro): wide ecosystem, heavy-duty, M12 sub-platform for compact, common in HVAC/plumbing/electrical. DeWalt 20V Max + FlexVolt: strong all-around, cross-compatible 20V/60V, common in construction. Reciprocating saw (5 Ah): 30 - 60 cuts in 2x4. Circular saw (6 Ah): 80 - 150 crosscuts. Miter saw (9 Ah): 100 - 200 cuts. Grinder (5 Ah): 20 - 40 wheel cuts in steel. Vacuum (5 Ah): 15 - 30 min. Light (5 Ah): 12 - 20 hours.
Charging times: standard charger 30 min (1.5 Ah), 60 min (3.0), 90 - 120 min (5.0). Fast charger 20/35/60 min. Always-on multi-station enables 4+ battery rotation. Cold weather: don't charge frozen battery; wait until room temp; some 0°F minimum.
Battery management
Storage: 50% charged for long storage, cool dry place, don't store fully discharged (damages cells), don't store in heat. Cycle life: 500 - 1,000 cycles to 80% capacity, 2 - 5 yr professional use, higher quality lasts longer. Degradation: 5 - 10% per year, faster with deep cycles + heat. Replace when: shorter runtime, won't charge fully, excessive heat charging.
Building inventory + choosing platform
Minimum pro setup: 2 batteries per primary tool family, 4 - 6 minimum total, multi-port charger, 1 - 2 charging while 2 - 3 in use. Max productivity: 6 - 12 batteries, vehicle + shop charging, hot-swap, zero downtime. Cost (5 Ah): Milwaukee/DeWalt premium each; mid-tier ; initial + per platform.
Decision factors: tool selection (which platform has tools), existing investment (platforms not cross-compatible), local availability + service, reputation (Milwaukee/DeWalt/Makita lead), price. Don't switch platforms casually - battery investment lost, tool re-investment. Hybrid platforms: M12 + M18 (Milwaukee); 20V Max + FlexVolt (DeWalt).
