IronRidge vs SnapNrack Racking Selection

Why this matters

Racking is the structural backbone of a residential PV install. The decision between IronRidge XR rail systems and SnapNrack Series 100/200 rail systems (the two dominant US residential rail products) is rarely about the rails themselves; it is about flashing systems, install labor profile, certified-engineering structural reports, and how each handles atypical roof conditions. A racking-selection mistake produces leaks years after install and warranty fights when nobody remembers which flashing was used where.

Product positioning

IronRidge is the volume leader in residential rail systems. Two rail families: XR10 for normal spans, XR100 for longer spans (typically tile and barrel roofs). FlashFoot 2 is the standard composition-shingle flashing. Halo UltraGrip is the comp-shingle attachment that combines flashing and lag in a single component for faster installs.

SnapNrack is owned by Sunrun and is the rail of choice for many install shops in the western US and Hawaii. Series 100 is the residential rail; Series 200 is a heavier commercial rail occasionally specified on large residential systems. SpeedSeal is SnapNrack's integrated flashing-plus-attachment for comp shingle, comparable to IronRidge Halo UltraGrip in concept.

Both manufacturers are UL 2703 listed for grounding integration through the rails, eliminating the need for separate equipment grounding conductors module-to-module on the array.

Comp-shingle attachment comparison

IronRidge FlashFoot 2: two-piece design with an aluminum flashing plate and a top puck that captures the rail. Installer lifts the shingle above the attachment, slides the flashing into place, drives the lag, then settles the puck and rail on top. Five-minute install per attachment for an experienced crew. Compatible with all major comp shingles per a third-party uplift test.

IronRidge Halo UltraGrip: one-piece design that drives a self-sealing lag through the shingle (no flashing under the shingle). Faster install (one tool, no shingle lifting) but relies on the lag's collar plus sealant to manage water rather than the traditional shingle-flashing geometry. Some AHJs require traditional flashing and reject UltraGrip.

SnapNrack SpeedSeal: one-piece flashed attachment with a stamped aluminum flashing that lifts under the shingle and a bonded EPDM seal under the head. Comparable speed to UltraGrip with the flashing-under-shingle geometry of FlashFoot. Universally accepted.

For a shop that wants the fastest comp-shingle install with no AHJ-acceptance risk, SnapNrack SpeedSeal is the cleanest pick. For shops already invested in IronRidge inventory, FlashFoot 2 with traditional shingle-lift install is the no-debate choice.

Tile-roof attachment comparison

Tile roofs are the racking-selection inflection point. Both manufacturers offer tile hooks (S-tile hook for clay/concrete S-tile, flat-tile hook for flat concrete tile, barrel-tile hook for clay barrel).

IronRidge tile attachments: Tile Replacement Mount (TRM) is the flagship product: the installer removes the tile under each attachment and replaces it with a metal flashing plate that mimics the tile profile. This eliminates tile breakage and the tile-hook interference issues that plague long-term tile-roof PV. The TRM ships in S-tile, W-tile, and flat profiles. Installation is slower than tile hooks but the long-term leak risk drops to near-zero.

SnapNrack tile attachments: TileTrac is a tile-replacement system similar to IronRidge TRM. Series 100 tile hooks are the faster alternative when tile replacement is impractical.

For new construction on a tile roof, specify tile replacement mounts from either manufacturer; the labor premium pays back in zero-callbacks over the system life.

Rail span and structural limits

Both rail systems publish span tables in their certified engineering documentation. IronRidge XR10 spans up to 6 feet with standard 60-cell modules in low-snow, low-wind zones; XR100 spans up to 12 feet on the same module class. SnapNrack Series 100 publishes a similar 6 to 12 foot range depending on snow and wind load.

The structural-report (PE-stamped design letter) is provided free by both manufacturers when the install company submits the array layout, module spec, and site address. For AHJs that require a stamped structural letter as part of the permit package (most do), the manufacturer-provided letter is the standard path. Both manufacturers turn these around in 24 to 72 hours through their online portals.

Wire management

IronRidge offers Wire Clips and Wire Pads that snap into the XR rail channel and hold MC4 cables and trunk cables off the roof surface. SnapNrack offers a comparable wire-management family.

Both systems support concealed wire management (cables inside the rail channel) on the long sides of the array, with field-cut access at junctions. For PV systems in fire-code jurisdictions that require clear access pathways (most of the western US and increasing nationwide), the design must show wire management routed away from the access pathways.

Grounding and bonding

Both rail systems are UL 2703 listed. The listing means the rail itself bonds the module frames to each other through grounding lugs (IronRidge Grounding Lug) or through factory-bonded grounding clips integrated with the module clamps (SnapNrack and newer IronRidge UFO clamps). A single equipment grounding conductor from one corner of the array to the array boundary disconnect provides the entire array grounding path.

Substituting non-listed grounding methods (toothed washers under non-bonded clamps, etc.) voids the listing and produces an inspection failure. Specify and use the manufacturer's bonding hardware on the bill of materials.

Penetration count and roof warranty

Roof manufacturers (GAF, Owens Corning, CertainTeed, Tamko) accept PV penetrations on their shingles without voiding the shingle warranty when the penetrations use a flashed attachment system and the installer is the racking-system manufacturer's certified installer. Both IronRidge and SnapNrack maintain installer-certification programs that satisfy the roof warranties.

UltraGrip-style non-flashed attachments are accepted by some shingle manufacturers and not by others. When the homeowner has a new roof under warranty, verify the shingle manufacturer's specific acceptance of the attachment system before specifying.

Selection summary

Choose IronRidge when:

  • Shop already standardized on IronRidge inventory
  • Tile replacement mounts (TRM) preferred for tile roofs
  • Long-span rails needed (XR100) for tile or wide-spaced rafters
