Battery - Add Now vs Later vs Never Decision Matrix

Why this matters

Every solar quote in 2026 has a battery question attached. The customer wants to know if they should add storage with their PV install, retrofit in three years, or skip it. The right answer is rate-structure-dependent, climate-dependent, NEC-compliance-dependent, and budget-dependent. Sales pressure to attach a battery to every quote is real, and so is the under-spec battery sold to a customer who actually needed two units. The matrix below sorts the call into add-now, add-later, or never, with the gates and drivers ordered by the questions that come up in the field.

Symptom presentation

Three customer profiles drive the ask:

  • New solar customer evaluating PV plus battery vs PV-only.
  • Existing PV customer asking about retrofit.
  • Customer who experienced a recent multi-day power outage and is now driven by backup, not bill savings.

The right answer to each depends on the rate structure, the resilience need, and the building's electrical infrastructure.

Quick checks - 15 minute pass

  1. Utility rate structure. Net Energy Metering 1.0, 2.0, NEM 3.0 (California Net Billing Tariff), wholesale buyback, no-export, or none. Each changes the economics dramatically.
  2. Time-of-use (TOU) periods if applicable. Peak hour rates vs off-peak rates.
  3. Outage frequency and duration over last 3 years. Sandia and Lawrence Berkeley have data; ask the customer directly.
  4. Critical loads list: refrigeration, well pump, sump, medical, internet, partial AC, EV charging.
  5. Inverter topology of existing or planned PV: micro, optimizer, or string. Battery compatibility differs.
  6. Available wall space, garage temperature range, distance from main panel, code clearances per NFPA 855.

Step 1 - Rate structure gate

Net Energy Metering (NEM) 1.0 or 2.0 (one-for-one credit): solar without battery still gets full credit for export. Battery economics are weak unless customer has TOU rate.

NEM 3.0 / Net Billing Tariff (California 2023-plus): export credit drops 60-80 percent below import rate. Battery now economically defensible to time-shift solar production to peak hours. Add-now is the typical recommendation if budget permits.

Wholesale buyback or no-export: battery is the only way to use solar at night. Add-now recommended.

Flat-rate utility with no TOU and no NEM penalty: battery payback is 20-plus years from arbitrage. Resilience value only. Skip unless customer values backup.

Step 2 - Outage frequency gate

Less than 1 outage per year, under 4 hours: battery is convenience, not need. Discuss as optional.

1-3 outages per year, multi-hour: battery is reasonable for resilience.

3-plus outages per year or multi-day in last 3 years (storm-prone, fire-prone, grid-fragile): battery is a primary recommendation.

Critical loads (well, sump, medical equipment, work-from-home): elevates the answer regardless of frequency.

Step 3 - Add-now drivers

Add-now is justified when:

  • NEM 3.0 or equivalent rate penalty on export.
  • Outage frequency or critical loads demand it.
  • Construction-bundled labor saves later retrofit cost; battery wiring and main panel work piggyback on the solar install.
  • Inflation-protected battery pricing (lock current pricing).
  • Federal tax credit (30 percent through 2032 per IRA 2022) applies to standalone battery as well as bundled.

Step 4 - Add-later drivers

Add-later is justified when:

  • Budget caps require sequencing.
  • Future battery vendor lineup is expected to improve (LFP chemistry availability, larger capacity, lower cost per kWh).
  • Rate structure may change in customer's favor or against them; wait-and-see.
  • Solar system is small (less than 5 kW) and will not generate enough surplus to meaningfully charge battery.

Architectural gates to add-later:

  • Choose a PV topology that retrofits cleanly. Enphase IQ trunk with future IQ Battery, SolarEdge Energy Hub with future Home Battery, or generic AC-coupled (Tesla Powerwall, FranklinWH) on any solar.
  • Run conduit and pull a string during PV install so the future battery install is plug-and-play rather than a wall demolition.

Step 5 - Skip-it drivers

Battery is not justified when:

  • Rate structure: 1:1 NEM, no TOU, no peak demand charges.
  • No outages in customer's recent history.
  • Customer cost-sensitive, payback is the primary metric.
  • House electrical limits sub-panel additions.
  • Customer in HOA or jurisdiction with battery siting restrictions that cannot be met.

Step 6 - Sizing - if add-now or add-later

Whole-home backup: rare and expensive. Typical residential battery (Tesla Powerwall 3 at 13.5 kWh, Enphase IQ Battery 10C at 10 kWh, Franklin aPower at 13.6 kWh) supports partial loads, not whole-home AC + EV + everything. Sizing approach:

  • Critical load panel approach. Wire critical loads into a sub-panel; size battery to support 24-48 hours of critical-load runtime.
  • Whole-home with load management. Smart panel (Span, Schneider Square D Energy Center, Lumin) drops non-essential loads automatically. Allows one battery to support whole house with grace.
  • Whole-home with multiple batteries. 2-3 batteries paralleled for full-house backup; budget gate.

Step 7 - Compatibility check

Existing PV inverter and proposed battery must be compatible:

  • Enphase microinverters: pair with Enphase IQ Battery natively.
  • SolarEdge optimizers: pair with Energy Hub plus LG, BYD, or Home Battery.
  • String inverters (SMA, Fronius, Solis): typically AC-coupled with Tesla Powerwall, FranklinWH, or similar standalone.

Step 8 - Code and safety

NEC 706 governs energy storage systems. NFPA 855 governs siting and clearances. UL 9540 (system) and UL 9540A (thermal runaway test) certifications required. Local AHJ adoption varies; some require battery siting outside the garage attached wall, some require fire-rated room construction.

Decision rules - quick call

  • New PV customer, NEM 3.0 or worse, budget allows: add-now.
  • New PV customer, NEM 1.0 or 2.0, no outage history, cost-sensitive: skip or add-later.
  • Existing PV customer post-outage, motivated by resilience: add-now if compatible; investigate topology first.
  • Critical loads (medical, sump): add-now regardless of rate.
  • Budget tight, future planning OK: add-later with prep work (conduit, sub-panel).

Confirming the choice

Document the rate structure, the outage history, the critical-load list, and the financial case (payback calculation if economic, resilience case if not). Customer signs acknowledgement that backup is partial-load if applicable.
