Why this matters
A septic system depends on bacterial action in the tank. Without the bacteria, the tank doesn't function. Understanding the biology helps the technician + customer manage the system properly. Many customer-side issues trace to disrupted bacterial action.
How the tank works
The septic tank is a biological reactor:
- Wastewater enters from the home
- Solids settle (sludge layer at bottom)
- Greases float (scum layer at top)
- Bacteria digest organics over time
- Liquid effluent flows out the outlet
- Drainfield receives the effluent
The tank works through gravity + biological action.
Bacterial types
The tank has two main bacterial types:
Anaerobic bacteria: thrive without oxygen
- Dominant in the tank itself
- Digest most organics
- Generate methane + other gases
- Slow but thorough
Facultative bacteria: tolerate either condition
- Backup to anaerobic
- Present at the surface
- Less efficient

A trained customer maintains the system longer.
When the tank stops working
Signs of bacterial issue:
- Slow drains in the home
- Sewage smell
- Soggy lawn over the tank or drainfield
- Tank effluent looks raw
Investigate the cause:
- Recent chemical use (verify with customer)
- Tank needs pumping (likely)
- Drainfield issue (different problem)

Most residential are single-tank for all wastewater.
