Why this matters

A septic system depends on bacterial action in the tank. Without the bacteria, the tank doesn't function. Understanding the biology helps the technician + customer manage the system properly. Many customer-side issues trace to disrupted bacterial action.

How the tank works

The septic tank is a biological reactor:

  1. Wastewater enters from the home
  2. Solids settle (sludge layer at bottom)
  3. Greases float (scum layer at top)
  4. Bacteria digest organics over time
  5. Liquid effluent flows out the outlet
  6. Drainfield receives the effluent

The tank works through gravity + biological action.

Bacterial types

The tank has two main bacterial types:

Anaerobic bacteria: thrive without oxygen

  • Dominant in the tank itself
  • Digest most organics
  • Generate methane + other gases
  • Slow but thorough

Facultative bacteria: tolerate either condition

  • Backup to anaerobic
  • Present at the surface
  • Less efficient

The anaerobic environment is what makes a septic tank work.

For customer:

When the tank stops working

Signs of bacterial issue:

  • Slow drains in the home
  • Sewage smell
  • Soggy lawn over the tank or drainfield
  • Tank effluent looks raw

Investigate the cause:

  1. Recent chemical use (verify with customer)
  2. Tank needs pumping (likely)
  3. Drainfield issue (different problem)

Why pumping matters

The pumping removes:

  • Blackwater (toilets)
  • Different treatment for each

Most residential are single-tank for all wastewater.
