Septic Pump Tank Maintenance
Why this matters
A septic system with a pump tank (typical for sites where gravity drainfield distribution is not feasible) depends on the pump and its controls to deliver effluent to the drainfield or to the next treatment stage. A failed pump backs up sewage into the home; a stuck float switch overpumps; a failed alarm leaves the customer with no warning before backup occurs. The pump tank is the highest-failure-rate component in a pump-fed septic system and the one customers least understand. The contractor who can service the pump tank, replace the pump, and program the alarm system in one visit closes the most common septic-emergency callback in 60 to 90 minutes.
When to service
- Annual preventive service alongside conventional septic inspection
- Pump alarm has activated
- Customer reports gurgling, slow drains, or sewage smell
- Pump cycling abnormally (too often or rarely)
- After heavy rain that may have flooded the tank
Pump tank components
A typical residential pump tank includes:
- Pump tank (separate from septic tank or integrated; varies by design)
- Submersible effluent pump (typically 1/2 to 1 HP, 240V or 120V)
- Float switches (typically 3 floats: pump-on, pump-off, high-alarm)
- Discharge line (to drainfield, ATU, or downstream)
- Pump alarm panel (visual + audible alarm on high water)
- Inlet from septic tank (with effluent filter typically)
- Access risers and lids
Tools and materials
- Full PPE (chemical-resistant gloves, eye protection, long sleeves)
- Multimeter
- Pump replacement (matched to system requirements)
- Float switch replacement
- Alarm panel parts if needed
- Wrench set for pump connections
- Sludge judge
- Replacement effluent filter
- Hose for tank flushing (do not flush solids into drainfield)
- Cell phone with manufacturer manual
Safety
Wastewater exposure risk. Standard PPE protocol per ATU article applies.
ALWAYS disconnect the pump's electrical supply at the breaker before working on the pump or floats. The pump is in water; a tech reaching in with the breaker on risks electrocution. Lock and tag the breaker. Verify dead at the pump terminals before reaching into the tank.

Procedure
Step 1: Verify the symptom
Get specifics:
- Alarm history (when did alarms occur, how long they persisted)
- Customer's recent water-use pattern (laundry, parties, recent rain event)
- Any visible signs (wet ground over drainfield, sewage odor)
Step 2: Open the tank
Remove the access riser lid (typically located near the septic tank or in the yard). Verify the tank's contents:
- Effluent should be just below the pump-off float level when pump is functioning
- High water level (above the alarm float) indicates pump failure or downstream blockage
- Standing high water that does not drain when manually triggered indicates downstream issue
Step 3: Test pump operation
Manual test:
- Lift the pump-off float by hand (simulates rising water)
- Pump should energize
- Verify pump runs smoothly (sound, no abnormal vibration)
- Lower the float
- Pump should turn off
If pump does not energize:
- Verify control panel power (LED status, breaker closed)
- Verify the float switch is electrically functional (lift; listen for relay click in panel)
- Check pump electrical connection at the panel
If pump runs but does not pump (running dry or running but no flow):
- Pump may be cavitating (low water level despite being above pump-on)
- Pump impeller may be jammed (debris, fabric, foreign object)
- Pump may be worn out (low capacity)
Step 4: Pump removal and inspection
If pump replacement is needed:
- Disconnect electrical
- Disconnect discharge line at the union (typical 1.5 or 2 inch PVC threaded union)
- Lift pump out using the lifting rope or chain (modern pumps have a rope; older may require fishing)
- Inspect impeller (clear debris)
- Test pump on a known-good circuit if possible (verify functional)
- Install replacement pump if needed
Common pump brands for residential septic:
- Liberty Pumps Pro280, LE51 (1/2 HP, 240V)
- Goulds GSP series
- Zoeller 53, 98, 105
- Champion 200 series
Match the replacement to the existing pump's HP, voltage, head, and flow rating.
Step 5: Float switch replacement
Float switches commonly fail after 5 to 10 years.
To replace:
- Lift float and cord from the tank
- Disconnect cord at the junction box (typically inside the alarm panel)
- Install replacement float at the same depth (the float position determines when pump kicks on; wrong depth changes pumping schedule)
- Reconnect cord
- Test by lifting (verify pump on / off / alarm function correctly)
Step 6: Alarm panel verification
Test:
- Activate alarm (lift high-water float)
- Verify visual alarm (typically red light)
- Verify audible alarm (typically beeping)
- Verify silence button works (mutes audible while light stays on)
- Verify alarm auto-resets when water level drops
Step 7: Effluent filter inspection
For systems with an effluent filter (between septic tank and pump tank):
- Locate the filter cartridge
- Pull out and inspect
- Rinse with hose (away from tank; do not flush solids back)
- Reinstall
- Replace if torn or damaged
Step 8: Customer instruction
- Show the alarm location and test button
- Explain how the alarm sounds during a failure
- Note recommended pump replacement at 7 to 12 years
- Recommend pump-tank service at the same interval as septic tank (typically 3 to 5 years)
Common pump tank failures

Common customer issues
- Pump running too often: Excessive water use, infiltration into tank, oversized pump cycling on/off
- Pump never running: Failed pump, failed float, or no water reaching tank (upstream blockage)
- Alarm light on: High water; investigate immediately
- Power outage caused backup: Battery backup option for pump (rare in residential)
Prevention
- Annual visual inspection of pump tank
- Test alarm panel monthly (customer-side)
- Replace pump preventively at 7 to 12 years
- Replace floats preventively at 7 to 10 years
- Customer education on water use patterns
- Effluent filter cleaning at every service
NEVER pull a pump from a tank without first disconnecting the discharge line at the union. Pulling a connected pump with the discharge line attached can damage the line or the fittings, and the weight of the pump plus water-filled hose can cause loss of grip and falls into the tank.
