Why this matters

A septic effluent or pump-tank pump that cycles far more often than the household's water use would explain is either pumping water that should not be in the tank or pumping the same water repeatedly, and both shorten pump life and signal a fault. The candidates are a float set with too small an on/off differential, a failed check valve letting the discharge column fall back so the pump re-pumps the same effluent, groundwater infiltration adding water the pump must move, and a surface-water cross-connection feeding the tank. The fingerprint is in how the level behaves right after the pump shuts off and whether inflow tracks weather or usage. Reading that behavior isolates float-and-check faults from inflow faults.

Symptom presentation

The customer reports the pump running often, the cycle counter (if present) climbing fast, or the pump audibly cycling with no corresponding heavy water use indoors. The pump tank level may seem normal. Ask whether the frequent cycling is steady all day regardless of use (inflow or backflow) or whether each cycle pumps and the level jumps right back up within seconds (check-valve backflow). That split drives the tree.

Quick checks

Watch one full cycle in the pump tank. If, just after the pump shuts off, the level rises back up within seconds, the discharge is draining back: the check valve is failed or missing. If the level falls and then refills slowly and steadily, water is entering the tank. Check the float on/off differential: floats set close together short-cycle even on modest inflow. Look for groundwater weeping in at the riser, lids, or penetrations, and trace any sump, downspout, or footing drain that might discharge into the system. Note whether inflow tracks rain (infiltration) or is constant.

A household leak, a running toilet or a dripping fixture, adds steady flow the pump must move; a meter check with fixtures off confirms it. Distinguish each by the timing and the entry point.

Confirming diagnosis

Confirm a failed check valve by observing backflow at shutoff and by inspecting the flapper and orientation. Confirm a tight float differential by widening the on/off span and verifying the cycle rate drops. Confirm groundwater infiltration by the wet-weather correlation and visible entry at tank penetrations. Confirm a surface-water cross-connection by tracing the suspect line and watching cycling drop when it is disconnected. Confirm a household leak by a meter test showing flow with all fixtures off. The combination of the post-shutoff behavior and the inflow timing resolves the branch.

Remediation

Replace a failed check valve with the correct full-flow check oriented to flow and positioned to minimize the standing column. Adjust or replace the float to give a proper draw-down differential so each cycle moves a useful volume and the pump is not hammering. For groundwater infiltration, seal the tank: watertight riser joints, gasketed lids, and sealed penetrations, or replace a cracked tank. Disconnect any sump, downspout, or footing drain from the septic and route storm runoff to an approved path. Repair household leaks found by the meter test. After the fix, verify the cycle rate matches actual water use and the pump is not short-cycling, and confirm the check valve holds.
