Large-Flow Advanced Treatment Unit Annual Service (Singulair, Aquaklear, Nibbler)

Why this matters

Advanced treatment units (ATUs) for residential clusters, small commercial sites, and large single-family homes treat to NSF/ANSI Standard 40 Class I (CBOD5 25 mg/L monthly average, TSS 30 mg/L monthly average) when functioning correctly. State on-site sewage codes typically require an annual service contract on every ATU; the service technician's signed inspection report is what keeps the operating permit current. A failing ATU surfacing untreated effluent on a soil-restricted lot is a state-reportable nuisance and, in some states, a criminal misdemeanor for the property owner if not abated. This article covers annual service for the three most common large-flow extended-aeration designs in U.S. service: Norweco Singulair 960, Aquaklear, and the Nibbler-style attached-growth packed-bed unit.

Common architecture

All three are buried-tank extended-aeration designs:

  • Pretreatment chamber (settling and grease separation).
  • Aeration chamber (continuous air injection by a positive-displacement blower or a submerged turbine).
  • Clarifier (settling of the activated-sludge floc).
  • Disinfection (chlorine tablet feed or UV) on units required to discharge to surface or to a spray field under most state codes.
  • Pump tank for dosed drainfield or spray distribution.

The blower runs 24/7. A failed blower silently kills the biology in 24 to 72 hours; the unit becomes anaerobic and the clarifier turns black.

Annual service tasks - Norweco Singulair 960

  1. Pretreatment chamber: measure sludge depth with a Sludge Judge; pump when total solids reach the manufacturer's threshold (typically 1/3 of liquid depth). Inspect inlet tee.
  2. Aeration chamber: confirm dissolved oxygen at the air-lift discharge with a handheld DO meter. NSF/ANSI 40 systems target 2 mg/L DO in the aeration zone. Below 1 mg/L the biology is starved and effluent quality collapses.
  3. Bio-Kinetic filter: remove and pressure-rinse the Bio-Kinetic upflow filter assembly. Singulair-specific procedure; the filter media should be examined for damage and the flow-equalization port for biofilm plug.
  4. Blower (Norweco 960 series uses the Norweco-branded diaphragm or linear-piston blower; some installations use Gast or Medo OEM): service kit replacement per the OEM interval. Diaphragms typically 12-24 months; linear pistons longer. Replace the air filter.
  5. Chlorine tablet feeder: refill with calcium hypochlorite tablets approved for septic disinfection. Do not substitute pool tablets (trichloroisocyanuric acid); the bulkiness produces a slug discharge and the cyanurate residual interferes with downstream sampling.
  6. Effluent sampling: grab sample at the discharge end of the clarifier. Most states require a documented sample once per service visit even if the AHJ does not require lab analysis.
  7. Discharge piping and surface inspection. Pump tank float switches, alarm panel, audible/visual alarm test.

Annual service tasks - Aquaklear / similar fixed-film aerated

  1. Pre-anoxic / settling chamber: solids depth, inlet tee.
  2. Aeration chamber media: Aquaklear and similar packed-bed units carry fixed plastic media that the biofilm grows on. Inspect media for sludge sloughing and channeling.
  3. Blower: same OEM-kit interval as the Singulair; airlift verification at the top of the media bed; confirm air distribution across the diffuser grid by visual surface boil.
  4. Clarifier sludge return airlift: critical to the activated-sludge balance; clogs reduce return flow and starve the aeration chamber. Rod and re-prime.
  5. UV chamber (if installed): replace UV lamp at the OEM interval (typically annual), clean quartz sleeve with a non-abrasive sleeve cleaner. UV intensity sensor calibration if equipped.
  6. Effluent sample, alarm test, discharge inspection.

Annual service tasks - Nibbler-style packed-bed units

  1. Pretreatment tank: sludge measurement, pump as required.
  2. Recirculation tank: confirm float settings and recirculation timer.
  3. Packed-bed surface: lift the top hatch and inspect the orifice plate or rotating distributor. Most packed-bed media is textile or expanded polystyrene; should be uniformly wet and not channeled.
  4. Recirculation pump: amperage draw with a clamp meter; compare to nameplate. A pump pulling above nameplate is bearing-failure incipient.
  5. Drainfield-side pump tank: floats, alarm, ball-valve operation if a flow-splitter is present.

Reporting and documentation

State on-site sewage programs typically require the operator (the certified ATU service provider) to file an annual inspection report with the local health department. The report carries fields for visit date, blower amperage, DO reading, sludge depth, chlorine residual at the discharge or UV intensity, sample collection time, alarm test result, and any deficiency. Keep a copy in the bound site log and one in the office for at least three years.

Common failure modes

  • Dead blower: biology collapses within days. Replace before re-inoculating; re-aerate for 7 to 14 days before sampling.
  • Surcharged pretreatment from a clogged effluent filter or grease-loaded household: pump and clean.
  • Dead chlorine tablets (compaction): tablets bridge above the feed cup and stop dosing. The discharge tests zero residual. Break up and re-stack.
  • Drainfield surfacing despite a functioning treatment train: drainfield is failing independently; treat as a separate work order.

Calcium hypochlorite tablets for septic disinfection are NSF/ANSI Standard 60 approved for that use only. Pool trichlor tablets carry an EPA registration that explicitly excludes wastewater disinfection. Substituting pool tablets is an FIFRA labeling violation, leaves a cyanurate residual that breaks downstream sampling, and the homeowner who finds the empty pool bucket in your truck has discovered exactly the kind of cross-product substitution that ends a state license.
