Why this matters

When a drainfield starts to fail, slow drainage, surfacing effluent, alarms tracking biomat clogging, the intervention ranges from jetting the lines, to rejuvenation treatments, to full replacement, and the right choice is set by why the field is failing and how far gone it is, not by which service is cheapest to sell. Jetting clears physical obstructions in the distribution piping but does nothing for a sealed soil interface. Rejuvenation addresses a biomat-clogged infiltrative surface in fields that still have soil capacity left. Replacement is the answer when the soil is exhausted, the field is undersized, or the site has changed. Matching the cause to the method avoids selling a treatment that physically cannot work.

Decision factors

The inputs are: the failure mechanism (a physical blockage in the distribution lines versus a biomat-sealed infiltrative surface versus exhausted or saturated soil), the field's age and loading history, soil conditions and the seasonal water table, whether the tank and distribution have been properly maintained, and the local authority's repair-versus-replace permitting rules. A camera or probe of the lines plus a trench inspection for biomat and soil saturation provides the data.

Jet the lines

Choose jetting when the failure is a physical obstruction inside the distribution piping, roots, sludge carryover from a tank that was not pumped, or a partial blockage, while the soil's infiltrative surface is still functional. High-pressure jetting clears the laterals so effluent again distributes across the field. Jetting is the right call when the lines are fouled but the trenches still accept water once cleared. It is the wrong call when the soil interface itself is sealed by biomat, because clearing the pipe does nothing if the surrounding soil will not accept effluent. Always pump and inspect the tank first; jetting a field fouled by tank-solids carryover without fixing the tank guarantees a repeat.

Rejuvenate the field

Choose rejuvenation when a mature biomat has sealed the infiltrative surface but the underlying soil still has capacity and the field is not undersized or sited in chronically saturated ground. Rejuvenation methods (resting the field with an alternate or reduced load, soil-fracturing, or approved aeration and treatment of the biomat) aim to restore the soil's acceptance rate. This is the right intervention for a field whose decline is biomat-driven and reversible, paired with correcting the overloading that caused it (leaks, excess water use, a tank that was not pumped). Rejuvenation is the wrong call when the soil is exhausted, the water table is chronically high, or the field was never large enough for the load.

Replace the field

Choose replacement when the soil's capacity is genuinely exhausted, the field is undersized for the household, the site has a chronically high seasonal water table that no rejuvenation will overcome, or repeated failures show the field has reached end of life. Replacement (a new field, an expansion, or a different system type suited to the soil and table) is also required when the local authority's evaluation deems the existing field non-repairable. Replacement is the durable answer when jetting and rejuvenation would only buy short reprieves on a field that cannot accept the load.

Physical pipe blockage, sound soil interface: jet the lines (after pumping the tank). Biomat-sealed surface, soil still has capacity, reversible cause: rejuvenate and correct the overloading. Exhausted soil, undersized field, chronic high water table, or repeated end-of-life failures: replace. Inspect the lines and the trench soil interface and confirm the tank is maintained before choosing; never jet or rejuvenate over an unmaintained tank or a sealed soil interface. Field repairs and replacements require permitting through the local onsite wastewater authority.
