Effluent Filter: Clogged vs Saturated vs Solids Carryover
Why this matters
An effluent filter alarm or slow-draining house is the cheapest service call you will get all week if you read the filter correctly, and the most expensive failure pattern in residential onsite systems if you do not. The same symptom comes from three distinct mechanisms with very different fixes. A clogged filter is a 20-minute hose rinse. A saturated drainfield masquerading as a filter problem is a five-figure system replacement. A solids carryover event from a failed inlet tee or overdue tank means you are pumping the field, not the tank, and every flush makes the field worse. Reading the filter cartridge, the tank level, and the dosing pattern in the right sequence keeps you from selling the wrong fix.
Symptom presentation
The customer call usually contains: "drains slow", "toilet gurgles", "alarm in the yard", "wet spot near the tank lid", or "sewer smell in the basement". All four can come from a filter at the outlet tee, a saturated absorption area downstream, or a tank that has lost its three-layer stratification and is sending sludge into the filter. Date of last pumping, household size, water-using appliances added in the past year (water softener regen, second dishwasher), and recent ground saturation from rain or snowmelt are all material to the diagnosis.
Quick checks at the lid
- Lift the outlet riser lid. Liquid at the invert is normal; one to three inches above the invert is the first symptom of downstream restriction; six inches or more means the system is hydraulically failed regardless of where the restriction sits.
- Lift the inlet riser lid. If the inlet level is materially higher than the outlet level (more than two inches), the baffle wall is working and the restriction is at the outlet filter or downstream. If both sides equalize high, the restriction is at the drainfield or pump tank, not the filter.
- Measure scum and sludge depth with a Sludge Judge. ANSI/NSF Standard 46 and most state guidance (Florida 64E-6, North Carolina 15A NCAC 18A .1900, Texas TCEQ Chapter 285) trigger pumping when combined scum plus sludge exceeds one-third of liquid depth, or scum is within three inches of the outlet baffle bottom.
- Check the alarm panel and float state. A high-water alarm in a gravity tank with no pump means tank backup from drainfield restriction. A high-water alarm in a pump tank with a working pump means the pump is outrun by inflow or failing.
- Check the cleanout at the building wall. If standing water sits in the cleanout, the restriction is downstream of the building. Do not power-flush from the cleanout until you have ruled out a field failure - you will surcharge the field.
Isolation tree
Branch A: Tank level normal at outlet, filter cartridge dirty. Pull the filter, hose it off back into the tank (not the yard - the biomass belongs in the tank), reseat, and verify the level drops within 30 minutes of resumed flow. Clogged filter confirmed. Document the date, set an annual or biennial inspection cadence per the OEM (Polylok PL-122 and Zabel A300 both call for annual residential inspection; Orenco Biotube Pro every three years). If the filter is heavily impacted with greasy material, look for a grease source - new garbage disposal, fryer use, failing grease trap.
Branch B: Tank level elevated at both inlet and outlet, filter cartridge clean. The filter is not the problem. Pull it anyway to confirm; if water does not drop with the filter out, the restriction is downstream. Differentiate field saturation from biomat clogging: probe the absorption area for ponding. A field saturated from recent rain without an upstream saturation event points to biomat failure, not a transient hydraulic event. Verify the d-box - a tipped or root-invaded box concentrates flow on one lateral.
Branch C: Tank level elevated, filter cartridge heavily impacted with grey solids, scum or sludge over the one-third threshold. Solids carryover. The tank is overdue, the inlet tee may have lost its bottom, or both. Pumping the tank is mandatory before any field work. Inspect the inlet tee during pump-down. If solids are visible in the outlet line during pump-down, the drainfield has already received slugs of sludge - inform the homeowner that field rejuvenation or partial replacement may be needed within 6-18 months and document the conversation.
Branch D: ATU with effluent filter at the discharge. The filter on an ATU is downstream of the aeration chamber and clarifier. A clogged ATU filter is almost always paired with a failed aerator (insufficient dissolved oxygen, sludge bulking) or a sloughing event after a power outage. Never enter a septic tank. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.146 governs permit-required confined spaces; septic tanks meet every criterion (limited entry, oxygen deficiency, hydrogen sulfide, engulfment) and have killed multiple homeowners and unprepared techs every year. All work is performed from grade through the riser lid with long-handled tools.
Confirming diagnosis
- Branch A: clean filter, restart flow. Level drops to invert within one hour of resumed use.
- Branch B: with filter removed, level does not drop in 24 hours - drainfield failure or saturation. Differentiate with a probe and a dry-week observation.
- Branch C: pump-down reveals scum and sludge above the threshold. Outlet line shows solids. Tank not pumped in 3-5 years.
- Branch D: aerator hours show extended downtime, dissolved oxygen below 2 mg/L per ANSI/NSF Standard 40, or visible sludge in the clarifier return.
Remediation
- Clogged filter: Rinse to tank, reseat, document. Schedule annual inspection.
- Saturated field, transient: Do not pump the tank yet. Reduce household flow (laundry to laundromat, no dishwasher), let the field rest 5-7 days, recheck. If it recovers, the cause was a wet-weather event.
- Failed field (biomat or root-clogged): Pumping the tank buys two to three weeks of relief but does not fix the field. Customer needs a field repair, jetting (where state code permits), rejuvenation, or replacement.
- Solids carryover from overdue tank: Pump the tank, inspect and repair the inlet baffle, install a Polylok PL-122, Zabel A300, or Orenco Biotube Pro at the outlet if not already present. Re-inspect at six months.
- ATU filter clog with aerator failure: Replace the aerator per OEM (Norweco Singulair 960 is field-serviceable; Hoot air pumps are unit replacement). Re-time the aeration cycle.
