Septic Alarm Troubleshooting

Symptom

Customer reports their septic alarm has activated. The alarm could be an indicator light, audible alarm, or both. Septic alarms protect against system failure; understanding what each type means + the diagnostic approach is essential for septic technicians.

Types of septic alarms

Identify the type before diagnosing.

High water alarm

For conventional + aerobic systems:

When the alarm is "ghost"

Sometimes alarms activate without a real issue:

Diagnose:

  1. Check the sensor itself
  2. Check the wiring
  3. Verify with a separate test
  4. Replace if defective

Customer should NOT use the system

When the alarm activates:

  1. Customer should reduce water use
  2. Don't add to the load

  4. Severe situations: stop using the system

Power outage considerations
