Why this matters

A leak that shows only after hours of steady rain, never after a brief shower, is a saturation-dependent leak, and it points to a fundamentally different failure family than a leak that drips the moment it rains. Brief-rain leaks are usually open-path breaches (a hole, a cracked boot, a missing shingle). Prolonged-rain leaks usually mean water has to overcome a threshold (back up to a height, saturate a felt, fill a low-slope ponding area, or wick by capillary) before it crosses the deck. Techs who chase these like open breaches waste days because a short hose test never reproduces them. Symptom presentation

The interior stain appears only after several hours of continuous rain or after a long soaking storm, and stays dry through quick showers. The stain may grow slowly rather than drip immediately, and it often recurs in the same spot every long storm. Wind direction sometimes matters less than total rainfall and duration. The defining trait is the threshold: a little water never gets in, but sustained water eventually does, which tells you something must back up, fill, or saturate first.

Quick checks

Confirm the pattern with the homeowner: dry after brief rain, wet only after prolonged rain. Inspect the attic for a broad damp zone or saturated insulation rather than a single drip track, which suggests felt saturation or slow capillary entry. Look on the exterior for low-slope sections, dead-valley areas, ponding stains, shallow-pitch transitions, and any flashing where water could back up to a height during sustained flow. Note that a standard quick hose test will likely not reproduce this; plan for a sustained, high-volume test.

Wet-roof and prolonged water-test work increases slip risk. Use a personal fall-arrest system anchored per OSHA 1926 Subpart M, and stage long water tests so a tech is never working alone on a saturated slope.

  1. Is the wet zone broad and the insulation generally saturated rather than a single drip? If yes, suspect underlayment/felt saturation or widespread capillary entry; the field has lost its secondary barrier and water crosses only after the felt soaks through.
  2. Is there a low-slope or ponding area, dead valley, or shallow transition uphill of the stain? If yes, suspect a threshold leak where water must accumulate to a backup height before crossing a lap or flashing. Heavy, sustained rain reaches that height; brief rain does not.
  3. Is the stain near a wall, chimney, or skylight base? If yes, suspect a flashing back-up: counter-flashing, step-flashing reglet, or kick-out where sustained sidewall flow finally exceeds the flashing's shed height.
  4. Is there a horizontal lap, low-slope membrane seam, or shingle lap on a marginal-pitch section above the stain? If yes, suspect capillary or lap back-up that only conducts under sustained head.
  5. Reproduce with a controlled long-duration test. Run water at storm-equivalent volume over the suspect zone for an extended period (matching the real-world duration that triggers the leak), with an attic spotter, escalating area by area until the stain reappears.

Confirming diagnosis

Confirmation requires duration, not just contact. A felt-saturation diagnosis is confirmed when a broad, sustained wetting of the field eventually produces the leak and the attic shows saturated felt/decking over an area. A threshold/back-up diagnosis is confirmed when sustained flooding of a low-slope, dead-valley, or flashing area reaches a backup height and reproduces the stain while a brief flow does not. A capillary/lap diagnosis is confirmed when prolonged wetting of a specific lap or seam reproduces the leak. The deciding evidence is always the long-duration, volume-correct test that matches the storm conditions the homeowner reports, since short tests give false negatives here.

Remediation

For felt/underlayment saturation in a field, the durable fix is typically a re-cover or replacement of the affected section with proper underlayment (self-adhering membrane where IRC requires it), not a spot patch. For threshold/back-up leaks, correct the geometry: re-slope or re-flash the low area, deepen flashing shed heights, add ice-and-water membrane and proper crickets, or rework the dead valley to shed rather than pool. For flashing back-up at walls and penetrations, install correct step, counter, and kick-out flashing to handle sustained sidewall flow. For capillary lap leaks on marginal-pitch sections, install the membrane or low-slope system the pitch actually requires. Re-run the long-duration test after repair to confirm the threshold no longer conducts.
