Shingles Curl on One Slope Only Ventilation vs Age Decision Tree

Why this matters

When asphalt shingles curl, cup, or claw on one slope while the rest of the roof looks healthy, the cause is rarely the shingles themselves. The same product, the same age, and the same install crew produced both slopes, so a defect would show everywhere. A single distressed slope points to a localized cause: heat baking that plane from below because of trapped attic air, sun exposure on the south or west face, or a ventilation imbalance that pulls hot air to one side. Replacing only the bad slope without fixing the cause buys the customer a few years before the new shingles cook the same way. Getting the ventilation-versus-age call right determines whether you sell a repair or a repair plus a ventilation correction.

Symptom presentation

One slope shows shingles curling up at the edges (cupping), curling down with the corners turning under (clawing), or surface granule loss and cracking, while the adjacent slope of the same roof is flat and intact. The affected slope is frequently the south or west exposure, or the slope over an attic area with blocked or absent intake venting. The customer may report the affected rooms run hot, or that the issue followed a re-insulation job that buried the soffit intakes.

Quick checks

Confirm both slopes share the same shingle product, install date, and orientation before assuming anything. Note the compass direction of the curled slope, south and west bake hardest. Then get into the attic and read the underside of BOTH slopes. Feel the deck temperature on a sunny day; a starved slope deck runs markedly hotter. Check soffit intake on the affected side for insulation blocking the vents, missing baffles, or painted-shut vents. Verify the exhaust path: ridge vent continuity, gable vents, or powered fans. A balanced roof has intake low and exhaust high on every plane; an unbalanced one starves one slope.

Isolation tree

Separate a ventilation cause from simple age and exposure.

  • Both slopes are the same age and the unaffected slope is flat. Age alone is ruled out, because age would distress both. GO TO ventilation read.
  • Affected slope is south or west and the attic is otherwise well vented. Suspect solar exposure accelerating a marginal shingle, more an age-plus-heat story. Confirm with attic temperature read; if the attic is cool, exposure is the driver.
  • Attic deck on the affected slope runs much hotter than the other and soffit intake on that side is blocked or absent. Ventilation imbalance confirmed. The slope is cooking from below. This is the most common single-slope cause.
  • Ridge vent is present but the affected slope has no soffit intake feeding it. The ridge pulls air across the cool slope and starves the hot one (short-circuit). Confirm by checking which soffits are open.
  • Powered attic fan present and pulling conditioned air or short-circuiting through nearby vents. The fan can starve the far slope. Inspect fan location relative to intake.
  • Shingles show mat cracking and heavy granule loss uniformly, both slopes, and the roof is near or past its rated service life. This is end-of-life, not a single-slope ventilation problem; re-evaluate as a whole-roof age call.

Ventilation read: measure attic temperature on a clear warm day, then verify net free vent area against the 1:150 rule (or 1:300 with a vapor retarder and balanced venting) per IRC R806. A slope whose deck runs 30 to 50 degrees hotter than ambient with no intake is starved.

Confirming diagnosis

The deck temperature differential is the confirming test. On a sunny day, read the underside deck temperature on both slopes with an IR thermometer. A starved slope deck commonly runs far hotter than its neighbor and well above outdoor air. Combine that with a physical intake check: if you can see daylight through soffit vents on the healthy slope but the affected slope's soffits are blocked, painted, or never existed, ventilation imbalance is confirmed. If both slopes vent equally and run similar temperatures yet only the sun-facing slope curled, you have an exposure-accelerated age case, document the shingle age against its rated life. Distinguish curling (heat and age) from buckling, which usually points to deck movement or moisture under the shingles and is a different repair.

Remediation

If ventilation is the cause, correct intake and exhaust balance before or with any shingle work: open or add soffit vents on the starved slope, install baffles to keep insulation off the intake, and confirm a continuous low-to-high path on that plane per IRC R806 net-free-area requirements. Do not mix ridge vent with open gable vents, the gables short-circuit the ridge and leave the slope starved. If the cause is exposure plus age and the shingles are near end of life, recommend slope or whole-roof replacement and set the customer's expectation that a higher-temperature-rated or lighter-colored product will last longer on that face. Replace only the distressed shingles only if the cause is genuinely corrected; otherwise the new material will distress on the same timeline.
