Roof Slope, Pitch, + Measurement Reference
Overview
Accurate roof measurement determines material quantity, labor, + cost. Slope determines material choice + installation method. Both are foundational skills + the source of most roofing estimating errors.
Slope vs pitch terminology
Often used interchangeably, but technically different:
- Slope = vertical rise per 12 inches of horizontal run (e.g., "6/12 slope" or "6:12")
- Pitch = vertical rise per total span (e.g., a 24-ft wide house with 6 ft rise = "1/4 pitch")
Industry uses "slope" almost universally. Stick with rise/run notation.
Common slopes

Code minimums:
- Asphalt shingle: 2/12 minimum, but 4/12+ recommended for warranty
- Metal panels: typically 3/12 minimum
- Tile: 3/12-4/12 minimum
- Slate: 4/12 minimum, 8/12 traditional
Measuring slope
Method 1: Inclinometer / smartphone
Modern smartphones have built-in level apps. Hold against roof surface; read angle in degrees, convert to rise/run:

Method 2: Carpenter's square + level
Hold a 12-inch level horizontally against a rafter (visible in attic). Measure vertical distance from level's far end down to rafter top. That number = rise per 12 inches.
Method 3: From ground (rough)
Sight along the roof surface from across the street. Compare to known slopes. ±1/12 accurate.
Calculating roof area
Step 1: Footprint area
Measure the building footprint (length × width) in feet. For complex shapes, break into rectangles + add.
Step 2: Slope multiplier
Roof area = footprint area × slope multiplier:

Example: 30 × 40 footprint = 1,200 sq ft × 1.118 (6/12 slope) = 1,341 sq ft of roof.
Step 3: Add for overhangs
If overhang is 18" all sides, add ~10-15% to footprint dimensions.
Step 4: Hip, dormer, valley adjustments
Add 5-10% for hips, gables, dormers that aren't captured in the rectangle calculation. Complex roofs may add 15-20%.
Material quantities
Asphalt shingles:
- 1 Square = 100 sq ft of roof area
- Standard bundle = 33.3 sq ft (3 bundles per square)
- Add 10% for waste (cuts, valleys, hips)
- Add 15% for steep slopes / complex roofs
For 1,341 sq ft roof: 14.5 squares × 1.10 waste = 16 squares × 3 bundles = 48 bundles
Underlayment:
- Synthetic: roll covers 1,000-2,000 sq ft depending on brand
- Felt 30#: roll = 200 sq ft (with overlaps)
Ice + water shield:
- Roll typically = 200 sq ft
- Required at eaves (2 ft beyond exterior wall typical, OR 36" from edge)
- Required at all valleys (36" wide centered)
Drip edge:
- 10-ft pieces typical
- Perimeter footage = sum of all eaves + rakes
Ridge cap:
- Ridge length in linear feet
- ~3 caps per 2 linear feet (overlapping)
Nails:
- 4 nails per shingle (6 in high-wind zones)
- ~480 nails per square at 4-nail
- 1 box (5 lbs / 1.25") = ~2,000 nails
Measuring difficulty + access factors
These affect labor (not just material):
- Pitch: each step up in slope = 25-50% more labor (slower, requires harness)
- Height: 1-story easier than 2-story (10-15% more labor); 3+ stories specialty (30-50% more)
- Access: easy yard vs steep / fenced / pool / landscaping
- Layers: tear-off of multiple layers takes 50-100% more time
- Complexity: gables, dormers, valleys all add cuts + flashing
- Distance to dumpster: longer = slower
- Penetrations: more = more flashing labor
Walking + working on steep roofs

OSHA: fall protection required > 6 ft elevation; in practice, > 6/12 pitch.
Common measurement mistakes
- Forgetting overhang in footprint: undercounts area 5-10%
- Single multiplier for mixed slopes: each slope measured separately
- Ignoring complexity: hips + valleys + dormers add 10-20%
- Skipping waste factor: 10% minimum on simple roofs, 15-20% complex
- Quoting from satellite/Google Earth without verification: can be off 5-15%
- Pacing inaccurately: tape-measure verification on first house in a neighborhood, then pacing OK

- EagleView: aerial measurement service,, very accurate
- HOVER / Roofr: smartphone-based, free or low cost
- Google Earth Pro: free, manual measurement, ±10% accuracy
- Pythagorean theorem on plans: if customer provides
For jobs > K, pay for accurate aerial measurement. Cheap insurance against estimating error.
The single most common roofing-estimate error: UNDER-COUNTING WASTE on complex roofs. A simple gable roof needs 10% waste; a roof with 3 dormers, 4 valleys, + a hip needs 18-22%. Estimators consistently use the same 10% across all jobs + end up short on material on complex roofs (delay + budget overrun). Visual complexity assessment matters more than footage.
