Owens Corning Duration STORM Class 4 Installation and Warranty
Why this matters
Owens Corning Duration STORM is a UL 2218 Class 4 impact-rated laminated shingle marketed for hail-belt states (Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, the Dakotas). The Class 4 rating triggers a homeowner insurance premium discount that many state-regulated insurers offer (5 to 35 percent off the wind-and-hail portion of the policy depending on carrier and state). The Duration STORM ships with the SureNail fabric strip, a woven reinforcement band over the common bond zone that doubles the nail-holding strength versus a standard shingle. The installation rules differ from non-SureNail shingles, and the warranty registration requires four matching Owens Corning accessories. Getting any part of this wrong forfeits the homeowner's insurance discount, the OC Limited Lifetime warranty, and the StreakGuard algae coverage.
UL 2218 Class 4 - what the rating actually means
UL 2218 tests impact resistance using a 2-inch steel ball dropped from 20 feet, then the back of the shingle is inspected for cracking. Class 1 through 4 represent escalating impact tolerance; Class 4 is the highest. Note that UL 2218 measures laboratory impact, not real-world hail. A Class 4 shingle still bruises and granular-loss-fails under sustained large hail; the rating is a statistical indicator, not a guarantee.
Insurance carriers in Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas accept the Class 4 stamp on the wrapper for premium discount qualification. The Texas Department of Insurance publishes a list of accepted impact-resistant products; verify Duration STORM is on the current list before quoting the discount as a benefit.
SureNail fabric strip - what changes about installation
The SureNail strip is a 1-3/4-inch-wide woven fabric reinforcement bonded across the upper portion of the visible face. The nailing zone is the SureNail strip itself; nail anywhere within the strip and the LoadGrip technology (the fabric reinforcement) increases pull-through strength versus a bare-mat shingle.
This widens the nailing target dramatically. The downside: the strip is harder to nail accurately with a worn coil gun, because the fabric is slightly raised and a glancing nail can deflect. Tune the gun pressure so the nail seats flush, not crushing the fabric strip. Check the first three shingles of each run.
Exposure and offset
Duration STORM uses a 5-5/8-inch exposure for standard installations. Pattern offset is the Owens Corning recommended 6-1/2 inches per course, repeating every 6 courses. The OC application instructions list a 5-shingle and 6-shingle offset diagram; pick one and stay with it for the entire roof. Mixing the two creates visible aesthetic banding under low-angle sun, especially in earth-tone colors like Driftwood and Aged Copper.
Fastener pattern - 4 nail standard, 6 nail high wind
Standard installation: 4 nails per shingle, all four landing inside the SureNail strip. Locations are approximately 1 inch from each side and 12 inches and 24 inches from the left edge.
High wind / steep slope: 6 nails per shingle is required when:
- Basic wind speed Vult at or above 130 mph per ASCE 7-22
- Slope above 60 percent (31 degrees)
- StormChoice extended wind warranty being registered
The two extra nails go at approximately 6 inches and 18 inches from the left edge, again inside the SureNail strip.
Fastener: 11- or 12-gauge corrosion-resistant roofing nail, 3/8-inch minimum head, length to penetrate the deck a minimum 3/4 inch. Hot-dip galvanized, aluminum, or stainless steel.
Starter and ridge
Starter strip: OC Starter Strip Plus or OC ProEdge Starter. Generic field shingles cut and inverted do not qualify for the System Protection or Total Protection warranty tiers.
Hip and ridge: OC ProEdge Hip and Ridge or DecoRidge. ProEdge uses an 8-inch exposure and 2 nails per cap, located 1 inch from each side at 5-1/2 inches up from the butt. DecoRidge uses a 7-inch exposure with the same nail location.
Accessories required for the Lifetime warranty
The OC Total Protection Roofing System warranty requires:
- OC starter (Starter Strip Plus or ProEdge Starter)
- OC ridge (ProEdge Hip and Ridge or DecoRidge)
- OC underlayment (RhinoRoof U20 synthetic or ProArmor)
- OC leak barrier (WeatherLock G, Mat, or Specialty)
- OC ventilation (VentSure ridge vent, RaftAir, or one of the listed roof louvers)
- OC Platinum or Preferred contractor
Without the contractor certification level, the homeowner gets the OC Limited Lifetime base warranty (no extended labor or material upgrade). With Platinum and all five accessories, the Total Protection includes 50-year non-prorated material, 25-year workmanship, and 25-year wind coverage.
Registration must be completed within 60 days of the install date at owenscorning.com/roofing.
Insurance discount documentation
To claim the homeowner insurance Class 4 discount, the carrier typically requires:
- A copy of the bundle wrapper showing the UL 2218 Class 4 stamp, or
- A signed installer certification on the carrier's form (carriers vary; State Farm uses Form CMP-4661, Allstate uses a similar internal form)
- The OC Duration STORM product name and SKU on the work order
- The install completion date
Photograph a wrapper before disposal on every Duration STORM job; the homeowner will call asking for proof six months later when the insurance renewal comes around.
StreakGuard algae coverage
Duration STORM includes the StreakGuard algae resistance technology (copper-containing granules). The algae coverage is 10 years in most regions, escalating to higher tiers under the Total Protection warranty. Like the GAF StainGuard, the entire roof must be StreakGuard-stamped; mixing in a bundle without the stamp voids the algae warranty.
