Gutter-to-Roof Interface Detail

Why this matters

The interface between the gutter and the roof edge is the single most common location for hidden water damage in residential construction. Water that should flow off the roof, over the drip edge, and into the gutter is instead leaking behind the fascia and rotting the soffit, the rafter ends, the wall sheathing below, and sometimes the wall framing. The leak is hidden inside the wall cavity; the customer notices only when paint bubbles years later, by which time the framing is rotted. The detail is simple (drip edge over gutter, with a gutter apron when needed) but routinely missed because the gutter is installed by the gutter crew, the roofing is done by the roof crew, and the interface gets no specific attention. Knowing how to do the detail right means a job that lasts the life of the roof; getting it wrong means callback or hidden damage.

What the detail must accomplish

Water flowing off the roof should:

  1. Run down the shingles
  2. Reach the drip edge at the eave
  3. Drip off the drip edge into the gutter
  4. Be conveyed by the gutter to the downspout
  5. Be discharged away from the foundation

A failure at the drip-edge-to-gutter interface admits water:

  • Behind the drip edge into the fascia
  • Behind the gutter into the wall sheathing
  • Below the gutter onto the foundation
  • Into the soffit

The two configurations

Configuration A: Drip edge over gutter (preferred)

The drip edge extends past the fascia, projecting over the gutter trough. Water from the roof drips off the drip edge directly into the gutter.

This is the recommended configuration for new roofs and reroofs.

Configuration B: Gutter apron (for existing gutter installations)

When gutters are already in place and a new roof is installed, a separate "gutter apron" flashing is added between the drip edge and the gutter. The apron extends from under the shingles, over the drip edge edge, and slopes down into the gutter trough.

Drip edge geometry

Drip edge profiles for the gutter-to-roof interface:

Profile Description Best use
Type C (L-shape) 90 degree L with no kick-out Older spec; minimal water management
Type D (T-shape with kick-out) Has angled kick that pushes water away from fascia Modern preferred; especially for gutter
Hemmed drip edge Folded edge for added strength High-wind areas

Type D is the standard for new install. The kick-out projects 1/2 to 3/4 inch past the fascia line and serves as the drip point.

Gutter apron specifications

Gutter aprons are formed sheet metal pieces sized to bridge the drip-edge-to-gutter gap:

  • Width: 8 to 14 inches (4 inches under shingles, 4 to 10 inches extending into gutter zone)
  • Bend: shaped to project from underneath the shingle down to the gutter
  • Material: matches drip edge (galvanized, aluminum, copper, painted steel)
  • Length: 8 to 10 ft strips for ease of handling

Sequencing for new construction or reroof

For a new roof being installed with new gutters:

  1. Install rafter / truss framing
  2. Install fascia board
  3. Install roof decking
  4. Install ice and water shield at eaves
  5. Install drip edge at eaves with Type D profile (drip edge extends past fascia)
  6. Install underlayment over the drip edge top leg
  7. Install shingles
  8. Install gutter system with gutter top edge below the drip edge edge (drip edge water falls into gutter)
  9. Verify gutter slope toward downspouts

Where this commonly fails

Issue 1: Drip edge installed flush with fascia. With no projection past the fascia, water drips down the fascia face, behind any gutter installed after. The fix: drip edge must extend 1/2 to 3/4 inch past fascia.

Issue 2: Gutter installed too high (top of gutter even with or above drip edge edge). Water from the drip edge hits the gutter outer wall instead of inside the trough. The fix: gutter top must be below the drip edge edge.

Issue 3: Drip edge installed with no Type D kick-out (Type C only). Water sheets off and may not break free of the fascia. Some water tracks down the fascia. The fix: use Type D profile.

Sequencing for reroof over existing gutter

For a reroof on a roof that already has gutters:

  1. Mark gutter position
  2. Tear off old shingles and underlayment
  3. Inspect deck and fascia condition
  4. Install ice and water shield at eaves
  5. Install new drip edge - careful not to disrupt existing gutter
  6. Add gutter apron between drip edge and gutter (formed sheet metal bridging the gap)
  7. Install underlayment over the drip edge top leg
  8. Install shingles

Gutter apron specifics

The gutter apron is the bridge between the drip edge and the gutter when the drip edge alone does not extend far enough. The apron:

  • Slides under the shingles by 4 inches minimum
  • Drops down past the gutter top
  • Extends into the gutter trough by 2 inches minimum

Without the apron, water drips off the drip edge, hits the back of the gutter (the gutter outer wall), runs down between the gutter and the fascia, and onto the wall below. The apron carries the water from drip edge into the gutter trough.

Common errors at the interface

  • Gutter installed before drip edge during reroof: drip edge installed without integration with gutter
  • Drip edge bent up at install: tradesman bent drip edge to avoid hitting gutter; water bypasses
  • Drip edge installed flush with fascia: no projection; water runs down fascia
  • Gutter top above drip edge edge: water hits outside of gutter
  • Gutter installed without slope: water pools in gutter; overflows at center of run
  • Gutter pulled away from fascia (already failed): water gap between gutter and fascia
  • No splash guard at valley discharge into gutter: high-volume valley flow overshoots gutter
  • Downspout disconnected at lower outlet: water discharges at foundation
  • No drip edge over gutter at any of the above sequences: rot in fascia within 5 to 10 years
