Attic Ventilation Requirements
Why this matters
Proper attic ventilation prevents ice dams, extends roof life, reduces energy costs, and protects insulation. Ventilation requirements
Per IRC R806:
- Net free vent area: minimum 1/300 of attic floor area (with balanced ventilation)
- Balance: 50% intake (soffit) + 50% exhaust (ridge)
- Where unbalanced: minimum 1/150 ratio
A 1,500 sq ft attic needs: ~5 sq ft of net free vent area total.
