Which Check First, Supply vs Drain vs Vent, for a Fixture Fault Decision Tree
Why this matters
A single fixture acting up, slow, noisy, gurgling, smelling, or weak, can be a supply-side, drain-side, or vent-side problem, and the three live in completely different parts of the plumbing system. The trap under the sink, the angle stop on the wall, and the vent on the roof are not interchangeable suspects. Checking them in the wrong order wastes the visit: you snake a drain that flows fine while the real fault is a vent siphoning the trap, or you replace a cartridge when the slow fill was a half-closed stop. This tree is about which of the three systems to check first for a given fixture symptom, so the first check is the high-yield one.
Symptom presentation
The symptom points to the system. "Slow to fill, weak stream" is a supply symptom (check supply first). "Slow to drain, water backs up in the bowl/basin" is a drain symptom (check drain first). "Gurgles, glugs, bubbles, or the trap smells after draining" is a vent symptom (check vent and trap first). "Smells like sewer" is drain/vent. "Noisy on shutoff (hammer)" is supply. "Drains fine but slowly loses its water seal and smells over days" is vent (siphoning) or evaporation. The art is mapping the fixture's behavior to supply, drain, or vent before reaching for a tool.
Quick checks
- Watch the fixture do the thing the customer described: fill it (supply), drain it (drain), and listen during and after draining (vent).
- For supply: read fill rate; remove the aerator; check that the angle stops are fully open; compare hot and cold.
- For drain: time how fast it empties; check the trap and the visible branch for a clog.
- For vent: listen for gurgling at this fixture or others when this one drains; check whether the trap seal disappears between uses.
- Note whether nearby fixtures share the symptom; shared symptoms move the suspicion downstream (main/vent) rather than at this fixture.
Isolation tree
Step 1, classify the symptom into supply, drain, or vent (above), and check that system first.
Branch A, supply-side first (slow fill, weak stream, hammer). Check the angle stops (fully open?), the aerator/showerhead (clogged?), the supply riser (kinked?), and the cartridge/valve. Compare hot and cold to localize to one supply line. Most weak-fixture complaints end here. Only escalate to a system pressure test if multiple fixtures are weak.
Branch B, drain-side first (slow drain, backup at this fixture). Check the trap and the fixture branch: hair/debris in a lavatory, grease in a kitchen line, a fouled pop-up. Snake or clean the branch. If the branch is clear but it still drains slow, and other fixtures are also slow, re-classify downstream (main line), not this fixture. If clearing the trap fixes it, you are done.
Branch C, vent-side first (gurgle, trap siphon, intermittent sewer smell). A gurgle when this fixture drains, or a trap that loses its seal and smells between uses, points to a vent fault: a blocked vent, an undersized or missing vent, or an S-trap configuration that self-siphons. Check the vent termination and the trap arm geometry. A fixture that drains fine but gurgles and siphons is a vent problem, not a clog, snaking it does nothing.
Branch D, sewer smell with the fixture idle. Drain/vent overlap: a dry trap (refill and watch), trap biofilm (clean it), or a vent letting gas in. Refill the trap first; if the smell returns, investigate the vent.
Branch E, shared symptom across fixtures. The fault is not at this fixture. Re-aim: weak across many fixtures is a supply/system issue; slow drain across many is a main-line issue; gurgle across many is a main vent or near-full main. Move downstream.
Confirming diagnosis
Confirm by reproducing the exact behavior after the first-system check. If the fill-rate problem clears when the aerator is off or the stop is fully opened, supply is confirmed and closed. If clearing the trap restores drainage, drain is confirmed. If a gurgle persists after the drain is proven clear, the vent is confirmed and snaking would have been wasted. The confirming principle: a fixture that drains freely but gurgles or siphons is a vent fault; a fixture that fills slowly is a supply fault; a fixture that holds water and empties slowly is a drain fault. Match the check to the behavior and you check the right system first.
Remediation
Match the fix: open or replace angle stops, clean aerators, replace cartridges or supply risers (supply); clean the trap or snake the branch (drain); clear or correct the vent and fix self-siphoning trap geometry (vent). For dry-trap odors, refill and advise periodic use. For shared symptoms, redirect to the main line or main vent. Reproduce the original symptom after the repair to confirm the right system was fixed, and note any code-noncompliant trap-arm or vent configuration found.
A trap that repeatedly loses its seal through self-siphoning (often an illegal S-trap or an unvented fixture) lets sewer gas, methane and hydrogen sulfide, into the living space; this is a health and explosion concern, not just an odor. Correct the venting or trap configuration to code rather than treating it as a recurring drain clog. Verify trap-arm length and vent connection meet the applicable code before closing the call.
