Toilet Bubbles When Tub Drains Decision Tree
Why this matters
A toilet that bubbles when the tub drains is reporting one of two things and only two: the drain is partially blocked downstream of the tee where both fixtures join, or the vent stack serving that branch is restricted or improperly sized. Both fixes are different. Both are common. Walk it in the right order and you find the cause inside the first 15 minutes.
Symptom presentation
- Water pulled from the tub draws air through the toilet trap as it passes the wye/sani-tee in the branch line. The toilet bubbles, gurgles, or burps.
- Sometimes the toilet water level rises briefly then drops.
- Sometimes the bubbling escalates to actual sewage backflow into the toilet bowl.
- May be intermittent (worse with full tub drains than with showers).
- May coincide with sewer-gas smell elsewhere in the house.
Quick checks (under 2 min)
Step 1: Confirm the symptom by running the tub at full discharge and watching the toilet. Pattern:
- Light bubbling, no level change: vent restriction.
- Heavy bubbling, water level rises and drops: partial blockage downstream.
- Water level rises and stays high after tub drains: heavy blockage; possibly a full main backup.
Step 2: Flush the toilet by itself. Watch for:
- Slow drain, sluggish flush: blockage in the toilet branch.
- Normal flush: blockage is downstream of the toilet, in the shared branch or the main.
Step 3: Run other fixtures (kitchen sink, lavatory, washing machine). If any of those gurgle or back up:
- Common drain affected: blockage in the main.
- Only this branch: localized issue.
Step 4: Look outside at the vent stack termination above the roof. Snow, leaves, animal nesting, frost closure - any of these restrict the vent.
Isolation tree
Branch 1: Vent restriction. The branch can drain water, but air can't enter the system fast enough through the vent. The toilet trap becomes the closest air source and the tub draw pulls air through it = bubbling.
- Visual: roof inspection at the vent stack termination. Clear leaves, nest material, frost.
- Smoke test or mirror test: drop a smoke source at a cleanout below; smoke should rise out the roof vent. No smoke = blocked vent.
- Snake the vent stack from the roof (proper PPE, fall protection per OSHA 1926.501; on a steep roof, refer or use a roof bracket).
- If the vent is sized smaller than code (under 2 in. on a 3 in. branch), it may be undersized and frost-closing in winter. Upgrade per IPC Chapter 9.
Branch 2: Partial blockage in the branch line downstream of the tub/toilet wye. Water from the tub fills the line, slows the toilet's drain, displaces air upward through the toilet trap.
- Snake from the tub or the toilet cleanout into the branch.
- Common causes: soap scum, hair, paper, grease, wipes.
- Cable / drum snake adequate for soft blockages; hydro-jet for hardened greasy buildup.
Branch 3: Mainline blockage downstream of the branch. Worse symptoms; usually multiple fixtures affected. Water from any fixture backs up at the lowest point first (typically a basement floor drain or a ground-floor tub).
- Camera the main from a cleanout to verify.
- Snake or hydro-jet depending on findings.
- Common causes: root intrusion at fittings, sag (belly) in the line, breaks, foreign objects (toys, "flushable" wipes).
- If camera reveals root intrusion at multiple joints, consider trenchless repair (CIPP lining or pipe bursting) per scope.
Branch 4: Air-admittance valve (AAV) failure. Some homes use AAVs (Studor vents) instead of full roof-penetrating vents on remodels or additions. A failed AAV produces the same symptom as a blocked vent.
- Inspect AAV (typically under the kitchen sink or behind an island).
- Test by lifting the AAV out and pouring water; should be no leak.
- Replace AAV; some jurisdictions don't allow AAVs at all (check local code), in which case re-pipe to a true vent.
Branch 5: S-trap installed instead of P-trap. Older homes or non-permitted DIY installs sometimes have S-traps on tubs. S-traps siphon themselves dry; the result is sewer gas at the trap and the trap reports as bubbling under load.
- Visual: P-trap has a vent immediately downstream; S-trap has no vent and dumps directly down.
- Re-pipe to P-trap with proper venting.
Branch 6: Cracked vent stack in the wall or attic. Less common but real: a vent that's broken inside a wall draws air from the building cavity, not from outside. The system functions but the venting capacity is reduced. Smoke test reveals; the smoke shows up in the attic or wall cavity instead of out the roof.
- Locate break; repair section.
Branch 7: Common vent serving more fixtures than code allows. On older homes with progressive additions, a vent that was code-compliant when it served two fixtures may now serve four after a basement remodel. The vent is undersized for the current load.
- Inspect what's tied into the vent; compare to IPC vent-sizing tables (IPC Chapter 9).
- Upgrade vent or add a separate vent for the over-loaded branch.
Confirming the diagnosis
After repair:
- Run the tub at full discharge while watching the toilet - no bubbling, no level disturbance.
- Run the toilet at full flush while watching the tub drain - normal drain, no gurgling at the tub.
- Run multiple fixtures simultaneously - no backup at any.
- Camera the main if blockage was the cause - verify clean throughout.
Repair / remediation
- Vent clearing: roof access with fall protection per OSHA 1926.501; snake or hydro-jet the vent.
- Drain clearing: cable or hydro-jet; choose based on blockage type and pipe condition.
- AAV replacement: code-compliant brand (Studor, Oatey); confirm jurisdiction allows AAV at the install location.
- S-trap correction: re-pipe to P-trap with proper venting.
- Vent upgrade: size per IPC Section 906; route through roof with proper flashing.
- Trenchless main repair: CIPP or pipe bursting for cracked or root-intruded mains; trench-and-replace if pipe is collapsed.
