Why this matters
When a sewer lateral fails, the repair method, spot repair, pipe bursting, cured-in-place lining, or open-cut excavation, drives cost, disruption, and longevity, and the right choice is set by the pipe's condition, the failure type, and the site, not by which method the crew prefers. Pick wrong and you either over-spend on a full replacement for a localized defect or you line a pipe that has lost structural integrity and watch it fail. A camera inspection with measured grade, plus knowing the pipe material, depth, and obstructions, is the data that decides. This matrix maps those inputs to the method that actually solves the failure.
Decision factors
The inputs are: the failure type (single offset joint or crack versus widespread cracking, root intrusion, or collapse), the pipe's structural condition (sound host pipe versus deformed or partially collapsed), the line's grade (proper fall versus a belly that no lining will correct), the material and diameter, the depth and surface conditions above (landscaping, driveway, slab), and the presence of bends, transitions, or service connections. Camera the full run and confirm grade before scoping.
Spot repair
Choose a spot repair when the defect is localized: a single offset or separated joint, a short crack, or one root-intruded joint, with the rest of the line in sound condition and proper grade. A point repair (a short liner sleeve over the defect, or a dig-and-replace of one fitting) addresses the isolated fault without disturbing the whole run. Spot repair is wrong when the camera shows the same defect repeating along the line, because that signals a systemic problem the spot fix will not cure.
CIPP lining
Choose cured-in-place lining when the host pipe is structurally sound enough to host a liner, the failures are cracks, root intrusion at multiple joints, or minor offsets along a length, and the grade is correct. CIPP renews the pipe interior without excavation, seals joints against roots, and works through existing access. It is the wrong call when the pipe has a belly (lining preserves the bad grade), when the host has collapsed or lost structural support, or when the diameter has deformed beyond the liner's tolerance. Verify grade and structural integrity on camera before committing to a liner.
Pipe bursting
Choose pipe bursting when the line needs full replacement, the existing path is acceptable, and surface disruption must be minimized: bursting pulls a new pipe through the old one's path, fracturing the host outward, with only entry and exit pits. It suits collapsed, badly cracked, or undersized lines on a reasonable grade where digging the full length would tear up driveways or mature landscaping. Bursting is wrong where there are tight bends the bursting head cannot follow, where adjacent utilities are too close to risk the outward fracture, or where the grade itself is the problem and must be re-set.
Open-cut excavation
Choose open-cut dig-and-replace when the grade is wrong and must be corrected (a belly or reverse slope), when the line has fully collapsed and offers no path for trenchless tooling, when there are bends or connections trenchless methods cannot negotiate, or when access pits for trenchless are no cheaper than trenching at shallow depth. Open-cut also wins when the run must be rerouted. It is the most disruptive method but the only one that can re-establish correct fall.
Putting it together
Localized single defect, sound line: spot repair. Multiple cracks or root joints, sound host, correct grade: CIPP. Full replacement needed, acceptable path, minimize surface damage: pipe bursting. Wrong grade, collapse, complex geometry, or reroute: open-cut. The camera survey and a measured grade reading decide between lining and bursting versus digging; never line over a belly.
