Why this matters
A drain that clogs again three weeks after you cabled it is a sign the first method was wrong for the cause, not that the customer abuses the drain. Cabling, hydro-jetting, and camera inspection are three different tools answering three different questions, and reaching for the cable reflexively on a recurring grease or root problem guarantees a return trip. Choosing the right first method on a recurring clog, sometimes the camera before any cleaning at all, turns a cycle of callbacks into one durable fix and a defensible quote. This matrix lays out when each method should lead.
The options
- Cable (snake/auger). A rotating steel cable with a cutting or retrieving head bores through or pulls back a localized obstruction. Strong on hair, paper wads, soft debris, and root masses it can cut. It punches a hole through a clog but does not scour the pipe wall clean, so grease and scale reform around the residue.
- Hydro-jet. High-pressure water through a directional nozzle scours the full pipe circumference, cutting grease, soft scale, and fine roots and flushing the debris downstream. It cleans wall-to-wall rather than boring a hole, which is why grease and recurring buildup respond to jetting where cabling only buys weeks. It demands adequate downstream capacity and a sound pipe.
- Camera (CCTV inspection). A self-leveling head on a push rod with a locator shows the actual pipe condition: the nature of the clog, the material, the slope, and any structural defect. It cleans nothing; it diagnoses. On a recurring clog the camera answers the question the cable cannot: is this a maintenance problem or a broken pipe.
When cable wins
Cable leads when the clog is localized, soft, and the pipe is sound: a hair clog in a lavatory or tub branch, a paper/wipe wad in a toilet or branch, or a root mass small enough to cut where the line is otherwise intact. Cable is also the right first move when access is tight, the run is short, or you need to retrieve an object rather than dissolve a buildup. On a first-time, single-fixture clog with no history, cable is fast and proportionate. The limit: cabling a grease line or a scaled main only bores a temporary channel, and the clog returns, which is exactly the recurring-clog trap this matrix exists to break.
When jet wins
Jet leads when the cause is grease, soft scale, sludge, or fine root intrusion, and especially when the clog recurs after cabling. Kitchen and commercial-kitchen lines, laundry lines with detergent/lint scale, and main lines with accumulated sludge are jetting work, because only full-circumference scouring removes the film that reforms the clog. Jet also wins when you need to clear a long run or restore full pipe diameter rather than a bored hole. The prerequisites: the pipe must be structurally sound enough to take the pressure (do not jet a known fragile or collapsed line without a camera first), and there must be downstream capacity and a relief point so you are not pressurizing a blocked system. Pair jetting with a camera before and after on recurring mains to confirm the cause and prove the clean.
When camera-first wins
Camera leads, before any cleaning, when the clog recurs on a schedule regardless of method, when the same spot blocks every time, or when you suspect a structural cause: a belly holding standing water, an offset or cracked joint, root intrusion at a specific joint, or a collapse. Camera-first is also the right call when you are about to quote significant work and need to justify it, when a real estate or warranty inspection is involved, or when prior cabling cleared the line but the problem returned fast. The principle: do not keep cleaning a pipe that is broken. If the recurrence is structural, cabling and jetting both fail by design, and the camera is the only tool that tells you to stop cleaning and start repairing. Locate and depth-mark any defect so the repair quote is precise.
Field decision flow
- First-time, single fixture, soft clog, no history: cable. Clear it, advise prevention, done.
- Recurs after one cabling, cause looks like grease/scale/sludge, pipe believed sound: jet. Scour wall-to-wall and flush.
- Recurs regardless of method, same location every time, or any sign of standing water, settling, or roots at a joint: camera first. Diagnose before cleaning again.
- About to jet a main with unknown condition or history of recurrence: camera first to confirm the pipe can take pressure and to identify a structural cause, then jet if sound.
- Camera finds a structural defect (belly, collapse, offset, heavy root intrusion at a break): stop cleaning, locate and depth-mark, quote repair or relining, do not cable or jet as a "fix."
- Camera finds only buildup on a sound pipe: jet to restore full diameter, then re-camera to verify, and set a maintenance interval.
A simple rule of thumb: cable proves access and clears soft localized clogs, jet restores a sound pipe to full diameter, and the camera decides whether you are looking at maintenance or a broken pipe. On any clog that has already come back once, let the camera lead before you cable a third time.
One operational note ties the three together: cleanout access governs which method you can even deploy. Cabling tolerates tight access and short runs, but effective jetting needs a properly placed cleanout to insert the nozzle and a downstream relief point so debris flushes away rather than backing up, and camera work needs an access point that lets the head reach the suspect section. When a line lacks adequate cleanouts, adding one is often the first corrective step, because it converts a line you can only poke at into one you can scour and inspect properly. Plan the access before quoting the method.
