Recurring Clog at Same Fixture After Snaking: Belly vs Grease Decision Tree

Why this matters

A clog that returns at the same fixture within days or weeks of snaking is not a clog that was missed; it is a clog whose root cause was never addressed, because a cable bores a hole through soft accumulation that closes again and does nothing to a structural defect. The two dominant repeat-offenders are a belly (a sag in the line that ponds water and collects solids) and a grease or soap-fat collar that re-deposits faster than the cable removes it. They look identical from the trap but require opposite repairs: a belly needs excavation and re-grading, while grease needs hydro-jetting and source control. Snaking forever is a slow leak of the customer's money and your reputation. The fork is structural defect versus accumulating deposit, and the only honest way to call it is a camera, because both produce the same recurring slow drain that a cable temporarily clears.

Symptom presentation

The customer reports the same fixture clogging on a predictable cadence, and reports that snaking always works but never lasts. A belly tends to produce a clog that builds gradually and is worst after heavy-solids events; the line drains but always a little slow even when clear, because water stands in the sag. A grease collar produces a clog that worsens after hot-water plus FOG events (kitchen use, dishwasher) and often comes with a sour or waxy smell. Time-to-recurrence is diagnostic: a belly may take weeks to re-choke as solids resettle; grease can re-close in days under heavy kitchen use. Ask what the customer was doing before each recurrence.

Quick checks

  • Camera the line immediately after snaking, while it is clear, so you see the defect without a plug obscuring it. This is the single most valuable step.
  • During the camera run, watch for standing water that does not drain after flow stops; a submerged camera head mid-run on otherwise sound pipe is a belly.
  • Look for the deposit type: a smooth, pale, tan-to-gray collar narrowing the bore is grease and soap fat; a uniform sag holding clear water with settled solids is a belly.
  • Recover and inspect cable debris: greasy waxy material confirms FOG; gritty sediment and food solids that accumulate in a low spot suggest a belly trapping debris.
  • Run a level or read the camera's pitch sensor across the suspect section; reverse or zero grade confirms a belly.

Isolation tree

Branch 1, belly or sag. The line has a low spot from soil settlement, poor original grading, or a failed support. Water ponds in the sag; solids settle out and accumulate until the cross-section chokes. Snaking punches a temporary path but the sag remains, so it re-fills. Confirm with the camera showing standing water that does not drain at rest and a grade reading at or below zero across the section. Belly recurrence is tied to solids load, not heat.

Branch 2, grease and soap-fat collar. Repeated FOG discharge deposits on the pipe wall; the cable bores a hole that the next few days of hot-water plus grease re-closes. Confirm with the camera showing a smooth pale collar and with greasy debris on the cable. Grease recurrence is tied to kitchen and hot-water events.

Branch 3, root intrusion at a joint (mimics both). Roots at a joint catch solids and re-grow after cutting, producing fast recurrence. Confirm with the camera showing a fibrous mass at a joint rather than a smooth collar or a clear sag. Distinguish from belly (structural sag) and grease (smooth collar) by the fibrous, joint-located appearance.

Branch 4, undersized or back-pitched arm at the fixture. A fixture arm that is too long, too small, or back-pitched self-clogs regardless of the main. Confirm by camera or by measuring the arm pitch; recurrence is independent of the main line condition. A back-pitched arm holds water and solids at the fixture trap weir, so the fixture appears to clog at its own connection while the main runs clear, which is the opposite signature of a belly or grease collar that lives downstream.

Branch 5, scale or mineral buildup in cast or galvanized drain. Old galvanized drains tuberculate internally; the rough, scaled bore both narrows the pipe and snags every solid that passes. Snaking knocks loose a temporary path that re-snags within weeks. Confirm by camera showing a heavily encrusted, rough-walled bore with no discrete foreign object, smooth collar, or sag. Distinguish from grease (smooth and pale) by the rough, rust-colored, irregular surface. The durable fix is descaling with a chain-knocker or replacement of the corroded pipe, not repeated cabling.

Confirming diagnosis

The post-snake camera run is non-negotiable for a recurring clog, because diagnosing from the trap guarantees another callback. A belly is confirmed by standing water that does not drain at rest plus a flat or reverse grade reading; grease is confirmed by a smooth pale collar plus greasy cable debris; roots by a fibrous joint mass. Correlate recurrence timing with the camera finding: weeks-long, solids-driven recurrence supports a belly, while days-long, kitchen-driven recurrence supports grease. Document the defect's distance from the cleanout and the standing-water depth so the repair is scoped once rather than re-dug.

Remediation

For a belly, the only durable fix is excavation and re-grading or replacement of the sagged section to restore minimum fall; jetting and snaking only buy weeks. For grease, hydro-jet the line to bare pipe to remove the collar fully, then address the source with an interceptor where required and customer FOG-handling guidance, and set an enzyme maintenance cadence rather than caustic chemicals. For roots, cut and then liner-repair or spot-replace the joint. For a fixture-arm defect, re-pipe the arm to correct size and pitch. After any repair, re-camera and run the original load to confirm the line stays clear at rest.
