Navien NCB Error E003 Flame Loss Fault Tree
Why this matters
The Navien NCB combi boiler's E003 code indicates flame loss or ignition failure: the unit attempted to fire but the flame rod did not confirm a stable flame, or a confirmed flame dropped out during operation. It is a hard lockout because running a gas appliance without flame confirmation is a safety hazard. The cause is almost always one of a defined set: insufficient or unstable gas supply, a fouled or misaligned flame sensing rod, a condensate or vent blockage, a polarity or grounding fault, or a failed igniter or gas valve. Working the branches in order, gas first, then sensing, then combustion air and condensate, finds it without throwing parts at the board.
Symptom presentation
The display shows E003 and the unit will not produce hot water or heat. The customer may report it worked then quit, or that it cycles, attempts ignition, and locks out. On startup you may hear the igniter spark and the gas valve click but no sustained burn, or you may hear a brief flame that drops out. Note whether it fails to light at all (ignition branch) or lights and loses flame (sensing or gas-supply branch), because that splits the tree.
Quick checks
Confirm the gas is on and other gas appliances work, which tests supply at a basic level. Check the unit is getting correct polarity and a solid ground; Navien flame sensing relies on proper polarity and the code can throw on a reversed or floating ground. Inspect the condensate trap and line for blockage, since a flooded condensate path can interfere with combustion and trip flame-related faults. Look at the intake and exhaust vent terminals for obstruction. Read any secondary codes alongside E003 in the unit's history.
Isolation tree
Start with gas supply. Measure the gas inlet pressure at the unit while it attempts to fire, both static and dynamic; Navien specifies a minimum dynamic inlet pressure, and a sag below it during ignition starves the flame and trips E003. A long or undersized gas line, a partially closed valve, a clogged regulator, or simultaneous demand from another large appliance can drop dynamic pressure. If gas supply is adequate, move to flame sensing: inspect the flame rod for carbon fouling or corrosion, clean it, and verify its position relative to the burner; a fouled or misaligned rod cannot confirm an otherwise good flame and locks out on E003. Check the flame-sensing signal per the service manual if equipped. Next, combustion air and exhaust: a blocked intake or exhaust, a disconnected or sagging vent that pools condensate, or recirculated flue gas can destabilize the flame. Inspect and clear. Check the condensate trap; a blocked trap can back up and disturb combustion. If gas, sensing, venting, and condensate are all good and the igniter sparks but no flame establishes, suspect the gas valve or igniter assembly per the manual.
Confirming diagnosis
Confirm a gas-supply cause by the dynamic inlet pressure reading: a sag below the Navien minimum during ignition attempts confirms it, and correcting the supply clears E003. Confirm a flame-rod fault by cleaning and repositioning the rod and watching the unit establish and hold flame. Confirm a venting or condensate cause by clearing the obstruction or trap and re-firing. Confirm a gas-valve or igniter failure only after the supply, sensing, venting, and condensate branches are ruled out, by following the manual's component tests; do not replace the gas valve or board on speculation.
Remediation
Correct gas supply: open the valve fully, upsize or correct the gas line if dynamic pressure sags, and verify the inlet pressure meets the NCB specification under load. Clean or replace a fouled flame rod and set its position per the service manual. Clear vent obstructions, correct vent slope so condensate drains, and verify the intake and exhaust are not recirculating per the venting instructions. Clear the condensate trap and line. Correct any polarity or grounding fault. Replace the igniter or gas valve only when isolated as the failed component. After repair, clear the lockout, run several ignition cycles, and confirm stable flame and no recurrence.
E003 is a gas safety lockout. Do not bypass the flame-sensing circuit, defeat the lockout, or operate the unit with a known flame-confirmation fault. Verify gas inlet pressure and combustion per NFPA 54 and the Navien service manual. A unit that cannot confirm flame must not be left running.
