Why this matters

A drainage system that vents quietly all summer but gurgles, slow-drains, or sucks traps dry only in freezing weather is almost always frost closure of the vent terminal, not a clog. Warm, moisture-laden sewer gas condenses and freezes on the cold inner walls of the vent stack where it pierces the roof, and over days the small-diameter vent ices nearly shut. The blocked vent can no longer admit air, so fixtures gurgle and traps siphon. The fix is not snaking the drain; it is correcting the vent terminal sizing or insulation per code. Reading the seasonality and the location of the noise isolates frost closure fast.

Symptom presentation

The customer reports gurgling at sink or tub drains, slow drainage, or a sewer odor that appears only in deep cold and clears when temperatures rise. Often the bathroom farthest from the stack, or a fixture on a long horizontal branch, is the loudest. The hallmark is the calendar: it never does this in summer. There is frequently a sucking sound after a toilet flush as the flow pulls air it cannot get from the frozen vent and instead pulls it through a fixture trap, breaking the seal.

Quick checks

Confirm seasonality by asking directly whether it ever happens in warm weather; a no points hard at frost closure. From inside, run a fixture and listen for the gurgle and trap pull. If you can safely access the roof, inspect the vent terminal for an ice cap or a frost-narrowed opening, common on undersized 1.5 or 2 inch terminals in cold climates. Check the terminal height and whether the vent was increased in size before passing through the roof. A thermal image or a quick mirror-down-the-stack on a cold morning often shows the ice ring.

Isolation tree

First rule out a true blockage: if drainage is also poor in warm weather, snake and inspect for grease or roots before blaming frost. If drainage is fine except in freezing weather, focus on the vent. Inspect the terminal size: in cold climates code requires the vent to be increased to a minimum diameter (commonly 3 inches) before passing through the roof specifically to resist frost closure, and an undersized terminal that was never upsized is the prime suspect. If the terminal is correctly sized but still ices, check the height and exposure: a short terminal in a snow-drift or shaded valley collects more frost. Next, check for excessive condensation sources: a vent serving a high-moisture load, or a vent run cold through an unconditioned attic with poor pitch that holds water and freezes. Finally, if multiple fixtures gurgle but only one trap loses its seal, that fixture may have an additional defect (a long undersized trap arm or a missing individual vent) that the frost event simply unmasks.

Confirming diagnosis

The confirming test is direct observation of the iced terminal during a cold event, or clearing the ice and seeing the symptom resolve immediately. Pour warm water or steam down the terminal from the roof to melt the ice; if the gurgling and trap siphoning stop while indoor fixtures run, frost closure is confirmed. Measuring the terminal diameter against the code minimum for the climate zone confirms whether the install was the root cause. If clearing the ice does not restore venting, re-evaluate for a deeper blockage or a venting defect on the affected branch.

Remediation

Correct the vent terminal to the cold-climate minimum: increase the vent to at least 3 inches in diameter for the portion passing through the roof and terminating in outdoor air, with the increase made at least one foot below the roof line, per IPC Section 904.2 (frost closure) and the local amendment for the climate zone. Set the terminal height per IPC 904 and at least the local snow-cover allowance above the roof. Insulate or reroute any vent that runs long and cold through unconditioned space and pitch it to drain condensate. Where re-piping the terminal is impractical, the durable code-compliant answer is still the increaser; periodic ice clearing is a stopgap, not a fix.
