Customer Says Water Smells Bad: Translation to Source Decision Tree

Why this matters

"The water smells bad" rarely means the water itself is the problem. The nose is reporting an odor at a fixture, and the source could be the drain, a dry trap, the water heater, the well or supply, or a venting fault, each with a different fix and a different urgency. The classic mistake is treating a rotten-egg smell as contaminated water and selling filtration when the real source is a reacting anode rod in the water heater, or treating a sewer smell as bad water when a trap dried out over vacation. This tree translates the smell, by character and by where it occurs, into its true source.

Symptom presentation

Character and location are the two diagnostic axes. "Rotten eggs / sulfur, strongest at the hot tap" points to the water heater (anode rod and sulfate-reducing bacteria reaction). "Rotten eggs at both hot and cold" points to the source water or well (hydrogen sulfide or bacteria in the supply). "Sewer / musty smell near a drain, not in the water" points to a dry trap, a drain biofilm, or a venting problem, not the water at all. "Smell only at one fixture's drain" is biofilm in that drain or overflow. "Chlorine / bleach smell" is usually municipal treatment, not a fault. "Smell appears after the house sat empty" almost always means a dried-out trap. Capture both axes before chasing a fix.

Quick checks

  • Smell hot versus cold separately at the same tap. Hot-only is the water heater; both is the source water.
  • Smell a glass of water away from the sink versus at the drain. If the glass is odorless but the sink stinks, the source is the drain, not the water.
  • Run water down a suspected dry trap (floor drain, guest bath, basement) and see if the smell clears; a dry trap is the most common odor source after vacancy.
  • Check whether the customer is on a well or municipal supply; well systems are far more prone to sulfur and bacterial odors.
  • Note recent changes: water heater set to a low temperature (favors bacteria), a softener installed, a long vacancy, recent drain work.

Branch A, sulfur at hot only. Water heater. A magnesium anode rod reacting with sulfate-reducing bacteria in the tank produces hydrogen sulfide; low tank temperatures accelerate it. Confirm by smelling hot versus cold (hot stinks, cold is clean). Fix by replacing the anode (aluminum/zinc or powered anode), disinfecting/flushing the tank, and raising the setpoint to a safe but bacteria-suppressing temperature.

Branch B, sulfur at both hot and cold. Source water. Hydrogen sulfide gas or sulfate-reducing bacteria in the well or, less commonly, the municipal main. Confirm with a water test. Fix at the source: well shock chlorination, aeration, or an oxidizing/filtration treatment system; coordinate testing before specifying treatment.

Branch C, sewer smell at a drain, water itself is odorless. Not the water. A dry P-trap (evaporated seal letting sewer gas in), a failed or missing trap, biofilm in the drain, or a venting fault. Run water to refill the trap; if the smell clears, it was a dry trap. If it returns or never clears, clean the drain biofilm and check the vent. A persistent sewer smell with multiple dry traps suggests a vent or pressure problem.

Branch D, smell at one specific fixture drain. Localized drain biofilm or a fouled overflow (common at bathroom sinks). Clean the drain and overflow. Not a water-supply issue.

Branch E, chlorine/bleach smell. Usually normal municipal disinfection, especially after main flushing. Confirm it is system-wide and transient; a simple carbon filter addresses taste/odor preference, not a fault.

Confirming diagnosis

Confirm by separating water from drain and hot from cold. The single most diagnostic test is smelling water poured into a clean glass and carried away from the sink: if it is odorless, the source is the drain or trap, and you stop chasing the water. Hot-only sulfur points squarely at the heater and anode. Both-sides sulfur warrants a water test before any treatment spend. A trap that clears the smell when refilled confirms evaporation, the most common and cheapest fix. Do not specify filtration or replace an anode until the smell is proven to be in the water, and on the right side.

Remediation

Match the source: replace the anode rod and disinfect the heater for hot-side sulfur, treat the source water (after testing) for both-sides sulfur, refill and maintain dry traps and clean drain biofilm for drain odors, and clean fixture drains/overflows for localized smells. For recurring dry-trap odors in seldom-used fixtures, advise periodic water-down-the-drain or a trap primer. Confirm the odor is gone at the fixture the customer named, and educate the customer that not every smell is "bad water."

A persistent sewer-gas odor that does not clear with a refilled trap can indicate a venting failure or a broken drain line, allowing sewer gas (which contains methane and hydrogen sulfide) into the living space; in high concentration this is a health and explosion hazard. Investigate the vent and drain integrity, do not just mask the smell. For well-water sulfur and bacterial odors, test before treating; specifying treatment without a water analysis risks the wrong system.
