Tint vs Reformulate vs Repaint: Color Miss Decision Matrix
Why this matters
A color that reads wrong on the wall is one of the most expensive ways a paint job goes sideways, because the customer sees it instantly and the fix can range from a small in-can adjustment to repainting an entire room. Reaching for the wrong correction wastes material and trust. Trying to tint a can that is the wrong base will never get there. Reformulating when the real issue is metameric (the color is correct but reads differently under the home's lighting) repaints a problem that was never in the can. This matrix maps the cause of a color miss to the right correction: in-can tint, vendor reformulation, or full repaint, so you spend the minimum to land the color the customer signed off on.
The options
- Tint: adjust the existing or remaining product with colorant to nudge it toward target. Works for small, in-range corrections on a compatible base. Cheapest and fastest, but bounded by the base's tint range and the risk of batch-to-batch drift if you tint by eye.
- Reformulate: have the supplier re-mix the color from the correct formula and base, often after re-reading the target with a spectrophotometer, when the original mix was off-formula, on the wrong base, or a bad batch. Produces a corrected product to repaint with.
- Repaint: apply the corrected color over the miss, full surface, because the wrong color is already on the wall. Always paired with tint or reformulate; the question is how much surface has to be recoated to land uniform.
When tint wins
Tint wins when the color is close but slightly off in a direction the base can still move, and the miss is small enough to correct without a full reformulation: a hair too light, a touch too warm, a minor strength difference. The base must be the correct base for the target depth; a deep color on a light base or vice versa cannot be tinted into range. Tint also wins when matching a small remaining quantity to a fresh can of the same formula to even out a faint batch difference. Confirm by drawing down the tinted material, drying it fully (wet and dry color differ), and comparing to the approved sample under the same light. Record the adjusted formula so the whole job stays consistent.
When reformulate wins
Reformulate wins when the product in hand cannot reach the target: it was mixed on the wrong base, the formula was entered wrong, the colorant was off, or a batch came out of spec. No amount of in-can tinting saves an off-base or off-formula mix. Reformulate also wins when matching an existing field color of unknown formula; a spectrophotometer read of the actual surface gives the supplier a corrected starting point. Have the supplier re-read and re-mix, then draw down and dry the new product against the approved standard before committing. The output of this path is a corrected product, which then drives a tint touch-up or a repaint depending on how much wall already carries the wrong color.
When repaint wins
Repaint wins when the wrong color is already on the surface and cannot be salvaged by viewing conditions or a minor edge correction. If a room was coated in the miss, the corrected color (from tint or reformulate) has to go back over the affected planes, and color uniformity usually demands recoating wall-to-corner rather than spot-patching, because a partial recoat flashes against the old color. The scope is set by how the eye reads transitions: full walls and natural break lines recoat clean; mid-wall patches do not. Before repainting, resolve whether the miss is real or metameric, or you may repaint a color that was actually correct.
Metameric check before any repaint: view the existing color and the approved sample under multiple light sources (daylight, incandescent, the room's actual fixtures). A pair that matches under one light and diverges under another is metamerism, the color may be on-formula and the issue is lighting, which a reformulation will not fix. ASTM D4086 covers visual color-difference evaluation; a spectrophotometer (Delta-E read) quantifies whether the surface is truly off-standard or just reading differently.
Field decision flow
- Confirm the miss is real. View existing versus approved sample under multiple lights; if they match under some and diverge under others, it is metamerism, address lighting expectations, do not repaint a correct color.
- Color truly off but the base is correct and the miss is small and in-range? TINT, draw down, dry, verify, record the formula.
- Wrong base, wrong formula, bad batch, or unknown field color to match? REFORMULATE from a spectrophotometer read; verify the new draw-down against the standard.
- The wrong color already covers the surface? REPAINT the affected planes with the corrected product, recoating to natural break lines for uniformity.
- Verify dry color, not wet, against the approved standard under the room's actual lighting before signing off. Keep a drawn-down, dated sample of the final approved color for any future touch-up.
A frequent false alarm worth heading off: a single coat over a contrasting old color, or over an uneven primer, reads off until it reaches full hide. What looks like a color miss at coat one is often just incomplete coverage that resolves at the second coat. Before launching a tint or reformulate, confirm the color was applied at full hide over a uniform base; judging color on a thin or single coat sends crews chasing a miss that the next coat would have closed on its own.
