New Cabinet Finish Blocks At First Close Decision Tree
Why this matters
A fresh cabinet finish that sticks to itself when the door first closes, or pulls the gasket bumper off, or leaves a print where a hand rested, is a blocking failure. The customer reads it as a defective paint job and they are not wrong to be alarmed. Blocking on cabinets is almost always a cure-versus-handling timing problem, sometimes a product-choice problem, and occasionally a film-build or environment problem. Because cabinet doors get closed the moment a kitchen goes back into service, the margin for under-cure is thin. This tree separates "not cured yet" from "wrong product" from "applied wrong" so you fix the actual cause instead of recoating into the same trap.
Symptom presentation
The classic complaint is that doors and drawers were closed too soon and the two painted faces fused, tearing the finish on open. Variants: bumpers leave a permanent ring or pull off paint; a fingerprint or sponge mark imprints into the surface days later; drawer slides stick where painted faces meet. Note the location. Blocking concentrates where two painted surfaces press together (door-to-frame contact, stacked drawer fronts) and where heat and humidity are highest (over the range, near the dishwasher, south-facing windows).
Quick checks
- Time since final coat versus the product cure schedule on the TDS. Most waterborne cabinet enamels are dry-to-handle in hours but block-resistant only after a multi-day to multi-week cure.
- Film build: a heavy single coat or too many coats stacked inside the recoat window slows through-cure and raises blocking risk. Check against the TDS dry-mil target.
- Product class: was a wall paint or a soft acrylic used on cabinets, or a purpose-built cabinet enamel, alkyd, waterborne alkyd, or 2K system? Soft binders block far longer.
- Environment during cure: high humidity and low temperature stretch cure dramatically. Read the room conditions over the cure window, not just at application.
- Contact surfaces: were bumpers reinstalled before cure, and were doors closed before block resistance developed?
Isolation tree
- Was the finish closed, stacked, or contacted before the TDS block-resistance time elapsed?
- Yes, and conditions were cold or humid: CURE-TIMING failure. The product is likely fine; it was loaded too early. Go to Confirming diagnosis, cure branch.
- Yes, but plenty of time had passed at warm, dry conditions: go to step 2.
- Was a soft wall paint or a non-cabinet acrylic used instead of a block-resistant cabinet coating?
- Yes: PRODUCT-CHOICE failure. The binder will not develop block resistance regardless of cure time. Go to product branch.
- No (correct cabinet product, ample cure): go to step 3.
- Is the film over-built, or were coats stacked outside the recoat window so an under-cured layer is trapped below the surface?
- Yes: FILM/RECOAT failure. The top skinned but the body never through-cured. Strip the affected areas and rebuild within the TDS window at target mils.
- No (correct product, correct build, ample warm-dry cure, still blocks): ENVIRONMENT/CONTACT. Persistent high heat-and-humidity at the contact points, or contact pressure from misaligned doors and aggressive bumpers, is exceeding the product's rated block resistance. Reduce contact pressure and recheck the product's max-service rating.
Confirming diagnosis
Cure branch: leave the doors open and let the finish reach the TDS full-cure time at room conditions, then re-test block resistance. Press two scrap-coated panels face to face under a light weight for a set period; if they separate clean after full cure but blocked before, timing is confirmed.
Product branch: thumbnail-hardness check. A cured cabinet enamel resists a firm fingernail print; a soft wall acrylic dents and recovers slowly. Soft print on a fully elapsed cure confirms the wrong product class.
Film branch: scribe through the film on a hidden edge. A skinned-over surface with a soft, gummy body underneath confirms a trapped under-cured layer from over-build or out-of-window recoating.
Remediation
- Cure timing: keep doors and drawers open, run airflow, hold the room warm and dry, and do not reinstall bumpers or close faces until the TDS block-resistance time is met. Educate the customer that handling-dry is not block-resistant.
- Wrong product: scuff-sand, prime if required by the new system's TDS, and recoat with a purpose-built cabinet enamel rated for block resistance. There is no shortcut around binder chemistry.
- Over-build or bad recoat: sand back the affected faces to a sound layer, then apply at target dry-mils with full recoat intervals honored between coats.
- Environment and contact: use thin felt or clear bumpers to lower point pressure, correct door alignment so faces are not preloaded against the frame, and confirm the product's service rating covers a high-heat, high-humidity kitchen zone.
A practical handoff step that prevents most blocking callbacks: leave the customer a written cure note. State the date the final coat went on, the date doors and drawers can be closed and bumpers reinstalled per the product cure schedule, and the reminder that handling-dry is not block-resistant. Most blocking failures are not the painter applying the wrong product; they are a homeowner closing a freshly finished door the same evening because it looked dry. Set that expectation in writing and the cabinet survives its first close.
