Blocking Tacky Only on South-Facing Windows After Cure Decision Tree
Why this matters
When painted window sashes, jambs, or doors stick to their stops and pull tacky only on the south and west elevations while north and east windows close clean, the variable is solar heat, and it is exposing a paint that never developed enough block resistance for a surface that gets hot and bears contact pressure. Blocking (two painted surfaces sticking when pressed together) is a classic warm-weather, sun-exposed-window callback: the south face bakes in afternoon sun, the film softens, the sash seals against the stop, and the customer finds the window glued shut or the paint tearing when they force it. Reading this right means recognizing it is a product-selection and cure problem (a soft, low-block film on a high-heat surface), not a thickness or dirt problem, so you specify a block-resistant enamel instead of recoating with the same soft paint.
Symptom presentation
Sashes, casement edges, door edges, or jambs on south- and west-facing windows stick to their mating surface, peel apart with a tacky pull, or transfer paint to the contacting surface. The film may dent under thumb pressure when the surface is sun-warm even though it feels firm in the morning. North- and east-facing windows on the same job with the same paint close cleanly. The problem appears days to weeks after painting, in warm or sunny weather, well past the touch-dry stage.
Quick checks
- Map the affected windows by orientation. South and west affected, north and east clean, is the signature of solar heat softening.
- Touch the affected film when the surface is hot in the afternoon versus cool in the morning. Tacky-when-hot, firmer-when-cool confirms heat softening.
- Identify the product. Was a flat or low-sheen wall paint, a soft interior latex, or a non-block-resistant enamel used on contact surfaces?
- Check the cure time before the windows were closed or operated. Was the film forced into contact before reaching full hardness?
- Look for excessive film build on sash edges (heavy brushing in the contact zone stays softer longer).
- Note the glazing and frame material. Dark sashes and metal or vinyl frames behind the painted surface run hotter in sun and push the contact film well above ambient, accelerating softening.
- Record the weather since the job. The first hot, sunny spell after a cool install is when latent blocking first appears, even weeks after painting.
Isolation tree
- Are only the sun-exposed (south/west) windows affected while shaded ones are clean, all painted with the same product? If yes, solar heat is softening a film that lacks block resistance. The orientation pattern is the diagnostic. Proceed to product remedy.
- Was a wall paint or a soft, non-block-rated latex used on the contact surfaces (sash edges, jambs, door edges)? If yes, wrong product for the application; these surfaces need a hard, block-resistant enamel.
- Were the windows closed, locked, or operated before the film reached full cure hardness (not just touch-dry)? If yes, premature contact under pressure set the block. The film may still harden; relieve contact and allow full cure.
- Is the film built up heavy in the contact zone? If yes, thick film cures slower and blocks longer. Thin, even application on contact edges cures harder, faster.
- Is the tack present even on cool, shaded windows and in the morning? If yes, the problem is not heat-driven; suspect an undercured or contaminated film, or a paint that never reached hardness regardless of sun.
- Are the surfaces firm when cool and only tacky when hot, on all orientations? That points at a low-heat-resistance product overall; the south windows just show it first and worst.
Confirming diagnosis
Press a clean, dry thumb (or a coin through a cloth) firmly into a sun-warmed affected sash edge for ten seconds. A film that takes the impression, feels tacky, or transfers is blocking from heat softening. Repeat on the same window in the cool morning and on a north-facing window. Tacky-hot, firm-cool, and worse on south orientation together confirm heat-driven blocking of a soft film. If the film blocks regardless of temperature and orientation, the cause is undercure or wrong product overall, not solar gain.
For a quantified check, the ASTM D4946 method places two painted faces together under a defined weight at an elevated temperature and rates the force needed to separate them. You will not run the lab test in the field, but the principle tells you what to watch: the same film that rates well at room temperature can fail at the elevated temperature a south sash reaches in afternoon sun. A pencil-hardness check (ASTM D3363) on the warm film versus the cool film also documents the softening: a film that pencils acceptably cool and scratches easily when hot is the product limitation you are diagnosing.
Remediation
Strip or scuff-sand the contact surfaces and recoat with a hard, block-resistant enamel rated for trim and high-contact surfaces (a waterborne alkyd or a quality acrylic enamel formulated for doors, sashes, and trim), applied thin and even on the contact edges. Allow the manufacturer's full cure time before operating the windows; touch-dry is not cure, and many enamels reach print-free hardness in hours but full block resistance in days to weeks. As an interim measure on a freshly recoated job, leave windows cracked open and avoid forcing sash-to-stop contact during the early cure. Where the original problem was premature operation of a sound enamel, simply relieving contact and allowing full cure may resolve it without recoating. Specify block-resistant enamel on all sash, jamb, and door-edge contact surfaces from the start, especially on sun-exposed elevations.
