Bleeding Tannin on Cedar Decision Tree

Why this matters

Tannin bleed on cedar, redwood, and Douglas fir is the single most common warranty callback on residential exterior painting and the one that gets the contractor blamed even when the substrate is the culprit. The brown streaks appear days to weeks after the topcoat is dry, almost always after the first heavy rain or dew event, and they originate from the wood itself, not the paint. A contractor who cannot diagnose tannin bleed from rust bleed, weep from a flashing failure, or simple mildew will end up doing a free repaint to make the customer whole. This tree separates tannin from look-alikes and walks the corrective path when tannin is the real cause.

The mechanism in one paragraph

Cedar, redwood, mahogany, and to a lesser degree Douglas fir contain water-soluble extractives (the tannin family). When the wood gets wet (from rain, dew, or even moisture migrating through the paint film from interior or framing-side sources), the tannin dissolves into the water and is carried to the paint surface, where it dries as a yellow-brown to reddish-brown stain. Heat accelerates the process. Knots, end grain, and the rougher face of resawn siding bleed most aggressively because they have the highest tannin concentration and the highest surface area.

Triage: is this actually tannin?

Test: wipe a small streak with a 1:3 household bleach to water solution on a rag. If the stain lightens immediately, it is mildew. If it does not change, it is tannin (or rust if metal is upstream).

Substrate gating: which cedar is bleeding

Not all cedar bleeds equally.

  • Western Red Cedar: high tannin, bleeds heavily, particularly at knots and the rough side
  • Northern White Cedar: lower tannin but still needs a barrier primer
  • Redwood: tannin loaded; one of the worst bleeders, especially heart redwood
  • Cedar shingles: knots are the failure point
  • Cedar fence pickets, wet from yard storage: very high bleed risk; do not paint until under 15 percent moisture
  • Douglas fir: bleeds at knots; field grain tannin moderate

Moisture gating before painting

Tannin bleed is moisture-driven. The single highest-impact prevention step is painting dry wood.

  • Moisture meter reading at 15 percent or lower at the depth the wood sits (use a pin meter at 1/8 inch depth).
  • Wait 30 days minimum on new cedar after rain or pressure washing.
  • New cedar siding that has weathered through one summer accepts paint better than freshly milled green cedar (the surface extractives have already washed out).
  • Pressure-treated cedar (rare but exists) is wet from the treatment process and may need 60+ days to dry below 15 percent.

If you cannot get the wood below 15 percent on the schedule, the right answer is to reschedule the paint, not to push through with a heavier primer.

Coating system that blocks tannin

The decision tree on the primer:

  1. Interior cedar paneling: BIN shellac primer is the gold standard. Two coats over knots. Cover Stain oil is acceptable but BIN is more reliable.

  2. Exterior cedar siding or fascia, low to moderate bleed risk (lower-tannin species, dry wood, north-facing or shaded): one full coat of Zinsser Cover Stain oil primer, then two coats of premium acrylic topcoat.

  3. Exterior cedar with heavy bleed risk (redwood, sun-exposed western red cedar, knots): full prime with Cover Stain oil OR a dedicated stain-blocking exterior primer such as Sherwin-Williams ExtremeBond or Benjamin Moore Fresh Start oil, then a second coat of the same primer on knots and end grain, then two coats of premium acrylic topcoat. Some contractors use BIN shellac specifically on knots (spot-prime only, do not BIN full exterior face because shellac has poor UV durability).

  4. Solid stain over cedar: an oil-modified solid stain like SuperDeck or Sikkens Rubbol Solid still bleeds tannin through unless preceded by an oil primer. The "all-in-one" claim on most exterior solid stains is for a thoroughly weathered substrate, not fresh cedar.

  5. Semi-transparent stain over cedar: there is no primer that blocks tannin while preserving translucency. The tannin shows through; the customer needs to accept it or commit to a solid topcoat.

Do not use a waterborne primer alone on bleed-prone cedar regardless of label claims. The water in the primer mobilizes tannin into the wet film, and the film traps the tannin near the surface where it appears in the finish. Use an oil primer or BIN shellac as the first coat over bleed-prone cedar; waterborne primer can only be a second coat over a cured oil first coat.

When the stain has already appeared (corrective)

The job is painted, the customer called, brown streaks are everywhere. The path:

  1. Confirm tannin with the bleach test above.
  2. Wash the affected surface with an oxalic acid wood brightener (do not use household bleach beyond the diagnostic test). Rinse and dry to under 15 percent.
  3. Spot-prime knots and heavily affected areas with Cover Stain oil, two coats.
  4. Full prime the affected face with Cover Stain.
  5. Recoat with the original finish (color match from the original batch number if possible).
  6. Document the corrective work; in many cases this is owed under warranty if the contractor primed with waterborne alone or skipped the moisture check.

Diagnostics on look-alikes

If the corrective rebuild does not stop bleed within one season, the cause was probably not (only) tannin:

  • Rust bleed: check every nail, screw, staple. Reset with hot-dip galvanized or stainless and spot-prime with rust converter.
  • Backside moisture: paint film fails from the substrate side, often because the back of the siding is unpainted and rain runs behind the cladding. Diagnose by removing one piece and checking the back.
  • Improper flashing: water enters at window head, sill, or wall-roof intersection and runs behind paint. Flashing repair, not paint repair, is the fix.
