Yellowing Grass - Diagnostic Tree

Symptom

Customer reports the lawn looks yellow - uniformly yellow, patchy yellow, or veined-yellow on individual blades. Yellowing isn't always disease; it's often a nutrient deficiency, soil pH issue, or watering / mowing pattern. Distinguishing the cause prevents reflexive over-fertilizing that can burn the lawn worse.

Likely Causes

In order of frequency:

  • Iron deficiency (chlorosis) - 25 % of yellowing calls, especially in high-pH soils
  • Nitrogen deficiency - 20 %, typically uniform yellowing without striping
  • Drought stress - 15 %, often with crisp texture
  • Excess water (root rot) - 12 %, soggy soil + blade yellowing from base up
  • Soil pH too high or too low - 8 %
  • Dull mower blade ripping tips brown then yellow - 7 %
  • Fungal disease in early stage - 6 %
  • Compaction blocking root oxygen - 5 %
  • Grub damage early stage - 2 % (later turns brown, not just yellow)

Diagnostic Steps

  1. Look at the pattern.
  • Uniform whole-lawn yellow → nitrogen or iron deficiency
  • Patches → drought, drainage, or disease
  • Striping (alternating green + yellow lines) → mower-spreader pattern issue
  • Yellow at blade tip only → dull mower blade (tip-tearing)
  • Yellow with green veins (interveinal chlorosis) → iron deficiency (classic sign)
  1. Pull a tuft of yellowing grass at the edge.
  • Roots white + healthy → nutrient or pH issue
  • Roots brown + slimy → root rot (over-watering)
  • Roots eaten / absent → grubs
  1. Test soil pH with a simple kit. Cool-season turf prefers 6.0 - 7.0; warm-season 5.5 - 6.5.
  2. Test soil moisture with a screwdriver 3" deep. Hard = dry; sinks easily = too wet.
  3. Inspect the mower (if customer mows their own) OR check your own crew's blade sharpness.
  4. Soil test for nutrients (if soil pH is in range but yellowing persists). Send to extension service or use a quick-test kit.

Resolution

  • Iron chlorosis: chelated iron application. Works within 7 - 14 days; the green-up is dramatic and sells the next year's program. If soil pH is high (alkaline), also recommend a sulfur application to slowly bring pH down.
  • Nitrogen deficiency: fertilize per the program schedule. Don't over-apply chasing the symptom - a single application turns yellow lawn green in 14 days.
  • Drought: deep + infrequent watering (1" per week, 2 sessions max). Customer education on irrigation timing.
  • Over-watering / root rot: reduce irrigation frequency immediately; allow soil to dry between cycles. May need core aeration to improve drainage.
  • pH too high: sulfur application (slow). pH too low: lime application (slow). pH changes take months, not weeks.
  • Dull blade: sharpen or replace (see Mower Deck Leveling HowTo). Yellow tips will green up in 7 days once cuts are clean.
  • Fungal disease early stage: see specific fungal-disease guidance per disease type. Often improves with a balance of fertilizing + airflow + watering changes; fungicide if severe.
  • Compaction: core aerate (see Fall Aeration SOP).
  • Grub damage: confirm by digging; if > 5 grubs per sq ft, curative insecticide application.

Iron chlorosis is the most visually-dramatic fix in lawn care. A high-pH lawn that's been yellow for years can green up in two weeks with a chelated iron application - and the customer thinks you performed magic. This single response sells more multi-year programs than any other intervention. Lead with iron when the symptom matches; the customer becomes a believer.
