Rain Bird ESP-ME3 Program Overlaps Fault Tree
Why this matters
The Rain Bird ESP-ME3 runs four independent programs (A, B, C, D) plus a Custom mode, and each can drive any of the up to 22 stations. When two programs are scheduled to start while a station is already watering, the ESP-ME3 does NOT run them concurrently. It stacks the second program and runs it after the first finishes. A customer who sees their irrigation running at 8:30 AM when they set everything to start at 5:00 AM is usually looking at stacked programs, not a controller fault. Misdiagnosing this as a bad triac or a stuck valve leads to needless board swaps and callbacks. This fault tree separates true hardware faults from schedule-stacking and Seasonal Adjust math so you fix the right thing on the first visit.
Symptom presentation
The complaints cluster into four shapes:
- "It waters too long" or "it runs into the morning." Total cycle time is the sum of all stacked program run times, often surprising the owner.
- "A zone runs twice." A station assigned to more than one program, or to the same program with multiple start times, repeats.
- "It runs at the wrong time." Often a Seasonal Adjust at 200 percent doubling run minutes, or a second start time the owner forgot.
- "Random zones come on." Usually Cycle+Soak re-queuing, or a Custom program day cycle the owner does not recognize.
Quick checks
Before opening the panel, confirm the basics at the dial.
- Set the dial to each program slot (A, B, C, D) using the program select button. Read every start time. The ESP-ME3 allows up to 6 start times per program; each start time launches the ENTIRE program once.
- At Set Run Times, note each station's minutes per program. A station with run time in two programs runs in both.
- At Seasonal Adjust, read the percentage per program. The displayed run time at Set Run Times is the BASE value; the controller multiplies it by Seasonal Adjust at run. A 10-minute base at 150 percent runs 15 minutes.
- At Water Days, confirm each program's day cycle (Custom, Odd, Even, Cyclic). Overlapping day cycles are the most common stacking cause.
- Check Cycle+Soak settings per station. A soak interval re-queues the station, which can look like a random restart.
Isolation tree
Work the branches in order; each isolates one cause.
Branch 1 - Stacking from overlapping start windows. List the start time and total run time of every active program for the day in question. If Program A starts at 5:00 and runs 90 minutes, any program starting before 6:30 stacks behind it. CONFIRM: the second program's actual start equals A's finish, not its dial start time. If the math matches observed behavior, this is stacking, not a fault. Fix by staggering start times or consolidating stations into one program.
Branch 2 - Duplicate station assignment. At Set Run Times, walk all four programs. If station 4 has minutes in both A and B, it runs in both. CONFIRM by toggling station 4 run time to zero in program B and re-observing. If the duplicate run disappears, the assignment was the cause.
Branch 3 - Seasonal Adjust inflation. If run times are roughly double or triple the base, read Seasonal Adjust. Monthly Seasonal Adjust can set a different percentage for each month; a tech who set 100 percent in spring may see 200 percent in summer. CONFIRM by dividing observed minutes by base minutes; the ratio should equal the Seasonal Adjust percentage.
Branch 4 - Cycle+Soak re-queue. If a station runs a short burst, stops, then restarts later in the cycle, check Cycle+Soak. The station runs its cycle minutes, soaks for the soak interval, then re-queues. This is by design for slopes and clay. CONFIRM the burst length equals the cycle setting and the gap equals the soak setting.
Branch 5 - True hardware fault. Only reach here after 1 through 4 are cleared. Symptoms: a station never energizes despite a run time, or runs when no program calls it. Put the dial to Manual, run the suspect station, and measure 24 to 28 VAC at that station terminal to common. No voltage with a run command points to a failed station output (triac) or a tripped internal sensor circuit. Voltage present but valve silent points to the field wire or solenoid, not the controller.
Confirming diagnosis
Use the controller's own tools to close the loop. Run Test All Stations (dial to Manual, then Test All) to walk every station for a fixed interval; this bypasses programs entirely and proves the output stage. If Test All runs a station cleanly but the program does not, the fault is in the schedule (branches 1 through 4). If Test All cannot run the station, the fault is in the output or field side (branch 5). Check the controller's Status screen and the Flow/MV indicator if a master valve or flow sensor is wired, since a stuck master valve can gate every station.
Remediation
- Stacking: stagger program start times so each program's window does not overlap the prior program's total run time, or merge stations into a single program with one start time.
- Duplicate assignment: zero the station's minutes in the unwanted program.
- Seasonal Adjust: set the intended percentage per program or per month; document the value on the work order so the next visit does not re-chase it.
- Cycle+Soak: confirm cycle and soak intervals match the soil; reduce soak if the total schedule pushes past the owner's window.
- Hardware: a confirmed dead station output on the ESP-ME3 modular base or station module is a module or controller swap. Verify firmware is current before condemning the board, as some run-time anomalies were addressed in firmware updates.
Always confirm 24 VAC presence with a meter before condemning a controller output. Backfeeding from a shorted solenoid or a pinched field wire can mimic a board fault and damage a replacement controller. Disconnect field wires at the suspect terminal and retest the output into a known-good solenoid or a 24 VAC test load.
