Pollinator-Safe Lawn Practices

Overview

Pollinator decline (bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects) is a growing customer concern. Lawn care practices significantly affect pollinator populations - chemicals, mowing timing, and habitat removal all matter. This reference is the talking-point card for customer conversations + an honest answer to "is what you're spraying killing the bees?"

Pollinator-friendly practices to recommend

Mowing:

  • Higher mowing heights: 3 - 4" lets clover + dandelions bloom before getting cut. These flowers feed pollinators.
  • Less frequent mowing in spring (when dandelions + clover bloom): every 10 - 14 days vs weekly.
  • Mowing in early morning OR evening: avoids the peak bee-foraging hours.

Chemicals:

  • Neonicotinoids (imidacloprid, clothianidin, dinotefuran, thiamethoxam): banned for residential cosmetic use in many areas, restricted in others. These are highly toxic to bees + persist in plant tissues for weeks. AVOID in landscapes where pollinators forage.
  • Glyphosate (Roundup): not directly toxic to adult bees but kills the flowering plants pollinators rely on. Use for weed control in non-bloom areas; avoid broadcast spraying.
  • Insecticides: select narrow-spectrum products + apply at low-pollinator times (early morning, evening, or after first frost when bees aren't active).

Habitat:

  • Leave bee lawn areas: customer-designated "messy" areas of mixed clover + native flowers
  • Plant flowering shrubs: customer-facing recommendations for additions to property
  • Provide nesting habitat: bare patches of soil for native ground-nesting bees; brush piles for over-wintering insects
  • Water source: a shallow water dish with stones for safe drinking

Communication:

  • Disclose to the customer when applying any product near bloom: "I'm spraying weed control today; pollinators may be affected for 24 - 48 hours."
  • Coordinate with beekeepers if the customer has hives or knows neighbors with them.

Practical impact on service operations

  • Pollinator-friendly service tier: many shops offer this as a premium service. Premium pricing for reduced-chemistry approach justifies the labor (more manual weeding, smarter spot-spraying).
  • Customer education: most pollinator-curious customers don't know specifics. A 5-minute conversation explaining what you ARE + AREN'T using is a strong differentiator.
  • Marketing positioning: "Bee-friendly lawn care" is a real marketing angle that attracts a specific customer profile.

Notes

  • The "all chemicals kill bees" customer misconception: not universally true. Many herbicides + most fungicides are minimally toxic to bees. Insecticides are the primary concern. Customer education on this distinction helps.
  • Lawn vs landscape: pollinators care more about the LANDSCAPE (flowering shrubs, native plants, water sources) than the lawn itself. Help customers think about their property holistically.
  • Seasonal timing: spring + early summer are bloom peaks + therefore peak pollinator activity. Plan chemistry around bloom calendars.

"Pollinator-friendly" is a compelling marketing differentiator that costs nothing to implement. Customers paying $X / month for "standard service" will pay $X + 30% for "pollinator-safe service" once they understand what that means. Lead with the values + then disclose what changes operationally.
