Lawn Grub and Soil Pest Identification Reference

Why this matters

Subsurface and surface lawn pests cause symptoms that look like drought, fungal disease, or fertilization deficiency to the untrained eye. The customer reports "brown patches" and "grass dying in spots," and an experienced tech who can identify the actual cause from the damage pattern, the timing, and a single sample dig is the tech who solves the problem on the first visit. Misdiagnosis as drought when it's grubs means the customer waters more, the lawn dies faster, and the customer fires the company. This reference covers identification - not pesticide application, which is a state-licensed activity in most jurisdictions.

Grubs (white grubs)

The general term "grub" covers larvae of several beetle species. All are C-shaped white-to-cream larvae living in the soil, feeding on grass roots.

Field test: dig a 6-inch x 6-inch x 4-inch deep square in a suspected damage area. Sift the soil. More than 5-10 grubs per square foot in cool-season turf or 8-15 in warm-season indicates economic damage threshold.

Damage pattern

  • Irregular brown patches that pull up easily (the roots have been chewed)
  • "Carpet rolling" - sod separates from soil because the root mat is gone
  • Heavy raccoon, skunk, or bird damage on the lawn (animals digging for grubs)
  • Damage peaks late summer / early fall (mature grubs feeding heavily)

May / June beetles run on a 3-year cycle and damage occurs in year 2 of each cycle.

Treatment windows (general - applicator must hold state pesticide license)

  • Preventative: late June to mid-July application catches the newly-hatched grubs. Common products: chlorantraniliprole, imidacloprid. Single annual application typically sufficient
  • Curative: late summer / early fall application when grubs are still small. Common products: trichlorfon. Faster-acting but doesn't last
  • Biological: parasitic nematodes (Heterorhabditis bacteriophora) applied when soil is warm and moist - alternative to chemical for organic programs

Chinch bugs

Surface-feeding insects that pierce grass blades and suck sap, injecting toxin that turns the grass yellow-brown.

Identification

  • Adult: 1/6 in long, black with white wing patches
  • Nymph: smaller, red with white band, becomes black as it matures
  • Identification test: float test - push a metal can (bottom cut out) into the turf, fill with water, chinch bugs float to the surface within 5 minutes
  • Most common in St. Augustine grass (southern US) but also Kentucky bluegrass and tall fescue under stress

Damage pattern

  • Yellow patches expanding to brown in full sun
  • Damage typically starts in sun-exposed, hot, dry areas
  • Damage in mid-summer drought combined with hot dry weather
  • Heavy populations can be seen at the edge of damaged patches

Treatment

State-licensed applicator: bifenthrin, lambda-cyhalothrin, or other labeled insecticides Cultural: maintain proper irrigation; chinch bugs prefer drought-stressed turf

Sod webworms

Caterpillars of small grayish moths. Caterpillars feed on grass blades at night, hiding in silk-lined burrows by day.

Identification

  • Adult moth: 1/2 in long, light brown to gray, V-shaped wing pattern at rest. Flies at dusk
  • Larva: green to brown caterpillar with dark spots, 3/4 in mature
  • Identification test: soap flush - dilute dish soap in water (1 tbsp per gallon), pour on a 1-square-foot area, caterpillars come to the surface

Damage pattern

  • Small (golf-ball-sized) brown patches
  • Damage expands across the lawn rapidly in heavy infestations
  • Moths visible flying low over the lawn at dusk
  • Damage worst in summer drought

Treatment

State-licensed applicator: Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis) for organic; pyrethroids for chemical Cultural: deep-water less frequently; healthy turf outgrows webworm damage

Armyworms

Caterpillars of moths. Move across the lawn in dense numbers, eating grass blades to the ground.

Identification

  • Adult moth: 1 in wingspan, gray-brown with prominent dark wing marks
  • Larva: 1.5 in mature, striped (yellow + dark green or brown depending on species)
  • Fall armyworm is the most common species damaging lawns in the eastern US

Damage pattern

  • Rapid loss of grass blades - lawn appears mowed-too-short overnight
  • Often starts in one spot and expands outward in a visible front
  • Damage occurs fast (overnight to a few days), more dramatic than grub damage
  • Heavy bird activity on the lawn

Treatment

State-licensed applicator: bifenthrin, spinosad, indoxacarb. Treatment must happen within days of detection Cultural: monitor in late summer / early fall; one cycle can destroy a lawn

Mole crickets

Burrowing insects in the southern US. Damage from tunneling at the soil surface and feeding on roots.

Identification

  • Adult: 1.5 in long, brown, large powerful forelegs adapted for digging
  • Damage shows as raised tunnels visible at the soil surface
  • Most common in St. Augustine and Bermuda grass

Damage pattern

  • Soft, raised tunnel ridges across the lawn
  • Loose soil, sod cuts easily
  • Roots damaged from below

Billbugs

Beetles whose adults and larvae both damage turf.
