Irrigation Zone Won't Shut Off Decision Tree
Why this matters
A zone that will not stop is the customer's emergency call: water bill spiking, lawn becoming a swamp, and the homeowner standing outside with a shovel. The fault is almost always one of four things: solenoid stuck open, debris in the valve diaphragm, controller pinned ON, or a wire short. Each gets a different fix and the wrong call drops the ball - replacing a controller for what was a $4 diaphragm wastes the customer's money. The tree below sequences by field probability so the call closes with the water off and a defensible fix.
Symptom presentation
Pattern A: a single zone runs continuously when the controller is OFF, no other zones affected. Pattern B: the zone runs only when the controller is ON, but never shuts off when the program would. Pattern C: multiple zones run simultaneously (one of them the stuck one). Pattern D: zone runs intermittently with no apparent program reason. Pattern E: the zone runs at trickle when off (not full flow).
Quick checks - 10 minute pass
- Open the controller and observe the LCD. Is the zone showing ON? Is the program running? Is the controller in a "manual" or "test" mode that was left running?
- Confirm the master valve is closed. If the main supply is off and the zone still runs, water is coming from elsewhere (a second supply, well, etc.) - rare.
- Walk to the affected zone's valve box. Open lid. Look at the solenoid - is it warm to touch (indicating power applied)? Listen for hum (vibration of the coil).
- Check for visible debris in the valve box (sand or sediment that may have entered the valve).
- Pull the controller cover and inspect for moisture, ant nest, or a stuck relay.
Isolation tree
Step 1 - Power-down test
Manual: disconnect the common (C) wire OR the zone (S) wire at the controller. If the valve closes within 5-30 seconds, the controller is sending power - controller pinned ON.
If the valve does NOT close after wire disconnect, the controller is innocent. The valve is mechanically stuck open. Go to Step 3.
Step 2 - Controller pinned ON (Step 1 closed the valve)
Field probability for controller fault:
- Stuck zone relay or triac on the controller board (60 percent). Replace board or replace controller.
- Programming error - a manual run command was issued and not cancelled (20 percent). Cancel manual run, retest.
- Cross-feed in the field wiring causing the controller to see a constant call (10 percent). Pull terminal strip, test with ohmmeter zone-to-zone. Continuity between two zones indicates damaged wire.
- Surge or lightning damage to the triac (10 percent). Inspect for burn marks on board.
Fix: replace damaged triac or full controller. Some Hunter, Rain Bird, and Toro controllers offer modular triac boards for field replacement; many do not.
Step 3 - Valve mechanically stuck open
If pulling the solenoid wires did not close the valve, the valve diaphragm is jammed open. Field probability:
- Debris under diaphragm (50 percent). A sand grain, pebble, or piece of pipe shaving wedges between the diaphragm and the seat, holding it open. Disassemble valve top, remove diaphragm, flush, reinstall.
- Diaphragm tear (15 percent). Older valve, especially if it has been frozen. Replace diaphragm or full valve top.
- Solenoid plunger seized (10 percent). The plunger is the small spring-loaded piston under the solenoid coil. Sand or scale jams it open. Unscrew solenoid, inspect plunger, clean or replace.
- Diaphragm support spring failed (10 percent).
- Manual bleed lever left open (10 percent). Customer or previous tech turned the bleed screw - close it.
- Body cracked (5 percent). Replace valve.
Step 4 - Valve type identification
Common residential valves and their service quirks:
- Rain Bird DV, DVF, DVF-PRS: 3/4 inch and 1 inch threaded. Diaphragm replacement is field-standard. Bleed screw on top.
- Hunter PGV, PGV-ASV: similar service. Bleed screw on solenoid.
- Toro 252/264 series: tight valve box clearance. Same diaphragm pattern.
- Hunter ICV: heavier-duty contractor valve. Diaphragm or full top swap.
- Irritrol 700 series: brass body, brass top. Less debris-prone, more freeze-prone.
Confirm model before ordering replacement parts.
Step 5 - Pattern E (trickle when off)
A zone that drizzles or weeps after shut-off is usually:
- Low-elevation head draining the line by gravity. Install a check valve at the head, or add an in-line drain valve and route to drain.
- Valve weeping past the diaphragm (small debris, not full failure). Service diaphragm.
- Cracked lateral pipe near the zone. Water leaks above ground until line bleeds. Repair pipe.
Step 6 - Pattern C (multiple zones simultaneously)
Multiple zones running together usually means:
- Cross-connection at the manifold - a homeowner T'd two zones together. Reroute.
- Manifold backflow: high pressure from one zone is back-pressurizing through a leaking diaphragm in another zone. Service both diaphragms.
- Master valve stuck open while a zone valve is faulted - cascade.
Step 7 - Pattern D (intermittent)
A zone that turns on at random times when the controller is OFF is unusual:
- Controller in a "rain delay" recovery state that resumes a paused program. Check program log.
- Lightning-damaged controller with a partial board fault.
- Mouse or insect nest shorting wires intermittently at the valve box (moisture-driven contact).
Disconnect the zone wire at the controller and run for 7 days as the diagnosis isolation. If the zone stays off, the controller is the cause. If it activates without controller, the wire is shorted somewhere in the field.
Confirming the diagnosis
Multimeter at the controller terminal strip: zone-to-common voltage should be 0V with controller OFF, 24-30V with controller commanding ON. Resistance test on the solenoid: 20-60 ohms typical for residential valves; open circuit means burned coil, short means failed coil.
Visual on diaphragm: clean disc with no tears means valve is fine; debris on seat means full clean. Pinhole or tear means replace.
Remediation
- Controller pinned ON: replace controller or board.
- Diaphragm debris: clean, reassemble.
- Diaphragm torn: replace diaphragm kit.
- Solenoid plunger stuck: clean and reseat.
- Solenoid coil burned: replace solenoid.
- Bleed screw open: close.
- Valve body cracked: replace valve.
- Wire shorted: trace, repair, splice with waterproof DBY/DBR connectors only (no electrical tape buried).
- Master valve stuck: service master.
Shut off the water at the master valve or backflow first to stop the bleed. Then diagnose without a meter spinning.
