Irrigation vs Fertilizer vs Mowing Which Caused Stripe Pattern Decision Tree

Why this matters

A striped or banded pattern in turf is a confession: it tells you a piece of equipment caused it, because nature does not lay down straight parallel lines. The three usual authors are the spreader (fertilizer skips or overlaps), the mower (scalping or wear lanes), and the irrigation system (coverage stripes between heads). The trap is that all three produce alternating green-and-pale or green-and-brown bands, and a tech who guesses wrong recalibrates the wrong tool while the pattern recurs. The width and spacing of the stripes, their direction, and their color sequence point precisely to the cause. Reading them stops the recurrence and avoids the wrong corrective spend, especially when the customer is staring at obvious lines and wants an answer.

Symptom presentation

  • Parallel bands across the lawn, alternating darker/greener and lighter/paler or browner.
  • Consistent spacing and a clear direction; sometimes a herringbone or crosshatch where two passes overlap.
  • Color sequence varies: pale-then-normal (skips), burn-then-normal (overlaps), or dry-brown-between-green (coverage).
  • Often noticed days to weeks after the triggering operation.

Quick checks

  1. Measure the stripe spacing. Match it to equipment widths: spreader swath, mower deck width, or head-to-head spacing on the irrigation zone. Spacing is the single most diagnostic measurement because each tool has a fixed working width.
  2. Read the color sequence. Pale stripes where product was missed = spreader skip. Dark-green or burned stripes where product doubled = spreader overlap. Dry brown between green = irrigation coverage. Lighter wear lanes following mower paths = mowing.
  3. Check direction against operations. Spreader and mower lines follow the operator's path; irrigation stripes run between head rows regardless of mowing direction.
  4. Probe moisture in a pale-vs-green pair. Drier in the pale band points to irrigation; equal moisture points to nutrition or mowing.
  5. Pull a plug in the off-color band. Scalped, thin canopy over a hump points to mowing; intact canopy that is just paler points to fertilizer; dry profile points to irrigation. The dig separates the two that can look alike from a distance.

Confirm by matching spacing to the spreader's effective width and the operator's pass log. Header-strip and proper overlap on the next round fixes it.
  • Dark-green or scorched stripes (burn) alternating with normal, spacing equal to half the spreader swath, sometimes at turn rows -> fertilizer overlap. Doubled product over-fed or burned those bands. Confirm by the burn and the spacing at the overlap interval. Reduce overlap and recalibrate.
  • Dry brown bands between green bands, spacing equal to head-to-head distance on the zone, worst in heat -> irrigation coverage stripe. The dry bands fall between sprinkler throws (no head-to-head overlap, wrong nozzle, low pressure). Confirm by running the zone and watching the throw, and by the drier soil in the brown band. A catch-cup audit quantifies the distribution uniformity.
  • Lighter wear lanes or scalped stripes following the mower path, spacing equal to deck width, worst on humps or with a low deck -> mowing pattern. Wheel wear, scalping on uneven ground, or always mowing the same direction. Confirm by walking the mower path and checking deck level and height. Vary direction, raise height, level the deck.
  • Mower wheel ruts or compacted lines following the same path every visit, turf thin in the wheel track -> mowing wear from repeating the identical pattern. Confirm by the track matching the wheelbase and the always-same direction. Rotate the mowing pattern each visit to spread the wear.
  • Crosshatch / herringbone -> two overlapping operations (commonly mowing plus one of the others); resolve each layer by its own spacing and color. Treat the layer with the more damaging signature (burn or dead coverage stripe) first, then address the cosmetic one.

Confirming diagnosis

Spacing is the master key: it ties the pattern to a specific tool's working width. Color sequence and a moisture probe in a paired band then separate the three. Irrigation confirms on drier soil in the affected band and a visible coverage gap when the zone runs; a catch-cup audit makes it quantitative, with a lower-quarter distribution uniformity below roughly 0.6 to 0.7 confirming a real coverage stripe. Fertilizer confirms on equal moisture, the pale-or-burn signature, and the spreader log; the burn version shows a sharp dark-then-scorched edge at the overlap interval. Mowing confirms on the wear/scalp signature aligned to the deck path and a low deck on uneven ground. Reproduce the cause on the ground before recommending the corrective, since two operations can overlay and only direct observation untangles a crosshatch.

Remediation

  • Fertilizer skip: apply a header strip, set correct overlap, recalibrate the spreader, and consider splitting the rate in two perpendicular passes.
  • Fertilizer overlap/burn: reduce overlap, shut the spreader at turns, recalibrate, and water in; let burned bands recover or overseed.
  • Irrigation coverage: correct head-to-head spacing or nozzle selection, raise pressure to spec, fix tilted or sunken heads, and re-audit DU.
  • Mowing: raise mowing height, level the deck, vary mowing direction each visit, and fix scalping on uneven ground.
