Irrigation Station Runs Twice With No Second Call Decision Tree

Why this matters

A customer reports their drip zone running twice a morning even though the controller is programmed for a single start time. The complaint reads like a wasted water bill or a soggy bed. The cause sits inside one of four spots: a controller programmed with overlapping schedules, an enabled cycle-and-soak that the homeowner forgot about, a stuck or weeping valve solenoid that is reopening without a 24 VAC signal, or a master valve hesitation that is dragging the zone open during a different program. Working the call without isolating the root cause leads to valve swaps that do not resolve the symptom and an angry second visit.

Symptom presentation

Get the calendar log off the controller before changing any setting. Most Hunter, Rain Bird, and Hydrawise controllers in the field at the residential level keep a 30 to 90 day runtime history accessible from the menu or the cloud app. Pull the actual run history, not the programmed schedule. A station that the log shows running at 5:15 a.m. for 10 minutes and again at 5:45 a.m. for 10 minutes when only one 10-minute start is programmed is the diagnostic baseline. A station that the log shows once but the customer sees running again is a valve or wiring fault, not a controller fault. Confirm with the customer whether the runs they observe are the same station or a different one piggybacking through a leaking cross-feed.

Quick checks at the controller

Open the program A, B, C, and D pages. Hunter HCC and X2 controllers default to four programs and will run them all if any have a start time set; a leftover program B start can replicate a station that program A already ran. Check stack-versus-overlap behavior; Hunter stacks, Rain Bird ESP-Me stacks by default but can be set to overlap. Check the cycle-and-soak feature: Hunter calls it the same name, Rain Bird calls it Cycle+Soak, Hydrawise calls it Smart Watering. A 20-minute total runtime broken into two 10-minute cycles with a 30-minute soak is exactly the symptom the customer is calling about and is working as designed. Read the manual rather than guess; default settings vary across firmware versions.

Isolation tree

Start at the controller. If a second program shares the station and has a start time set, disable it and observe overnight. If cycle-and-soak is enabled, confirm the homeowner understands the behavior; if they want a single uninterrupted run, raise the maximum cycle time above the total runtime to suppress the soak split. If both the controller and the program log show only one run but the field is showing two, move to the field.

In the field, clamp a meter on the common wire at the valve in question. With the controller in OFF mode, watch for 24 VAC on the station wire during the unexpected run. Reading 24 VAC at the off-cycle confirms a controller or wiring fault sourcing voltage; no voltage during the unexpected run confirms a valve-side fault, most likely a leaking diaphragm, a stuck solenoid plunger, or a cross-connected pipe feeding water with the valve closed.

Pull the solenoid and inspect the plunger and spring. A grain of debris under the seat will hold the diaphragm cracked open; the valve will weep continuously and may appear to run on schedule because the meter reads flow whenever the upstream pressure window is open. Replace the solenoid only after flushing the body; a cracked diaphragm under a Hunter PGV or Rain Bird DV is the actual repair, not the solenoid. If both inspections pass, isolate the supply with the valve manifold shutoff and watch the downstream emitters; flow with the valve mechanically locked closed is a cross-connection or a stuck master valve, not a station-level fault.

Confirming the call

Document the program log screen, the field VAC reading, and the diaphragm inspection. The four legitimate confirmation paths are: program B or C had a duplicate start, cycle-and-soak split the runtime, the controller is sourcing voltage off-schedule and needs reset or replacement, or the valve is leaking past the diaphragm. Anything else points to a cross-connection between zones that needs a hydraulic isolation test. The ANSI/ASABE EP501 standard for landscape irrigation system design references diaphragm inspection as the second-step diagnostic after voltage isolation on residential automatic valves; following the standard order avoids the common mistake of swapping the solenoid first.

Remediation by branch

Controller program overlap: clear the duplicate start, save, and verify the runtime log the next morning. Educate the homeowner on the program structure with a one-page handout. Cycle-and-soak misunderstanding: either disable the feature or raise the maximum cycle time above the total program runtime. Document the change in the customer record so the next route tech does not re-enable the feature on the next service.

Valve diaphragm fault: replace the diaphragm and solenoid, flush the body, retest at full pressure for 10 minutes, then run the station from the controller for a normal cycle and confirm clean shutoff. Track the part number in the work order; Hunter PGV-1-ASV, Rain Bird DVF, and Toro 252 are the three most common residential valves in service today and the diaphragms are not interchangeable across brands.

Cross-connection or master valve hesitation: isolate the suspected feed, pressurize from the meter side only, and walk the manifold listening for flow. A buried tee from an older partial repair will source the second cycle from an adjacent zone. The fix is a pipe correction, not a valve swap.

Do not certify a fix until the runtime log on the controller confirms a single run for three consecutive days. A diaphragm fix that holds for 24 hours on a cool morning will weep again on a 95-degree afternoon when the supply pressure climbs 20 psi. The second callback for the same complaint is unbillable and burns the warranty position.
