Hardscape Edging Installation

Why this matters

Hardscape edging - steel, aluminum, paver, or polymer - is the visible boundary between lawn + bed. The right install lasts 15 - 30 years; the wrong install heaves out of the ground in one freeze cycle + the customer blames the lawn-care company. This is a profitable add-on service + a differentiator from mow-only crews.

Edging material comparison

Steel edging (Col-Met, Sure-Loc, Edge Pro)

  • Lifespan: 25 - 50+ years
  • Profile: 3/16" thickness, 4" - 6" depth typical; 8' lengths
  • Best for: bed-to-lawn transition; clean modern aesthetic; high-end residential
  • Downside: edges sharp during install + after years of erosion; not for high-foot-traffic areas

Aluminum edging (Permaloc, Sure-Loc Aluminum)

  • Lifespan: 30 - 50 years (no rust)
  • Profile: similar to steel; lighter weight
  • Best for: applications where rust is a concern (irrigated areas, coastal)
  • Downside: less rigid than steel; doesn't hold curves as cleanly

Plastic / polymer edging (BorderRich, Master Mark)

  • Lifespan: 5 - 15 years
  • Best for: budget jobs, temporary boundaries
  • Downside: heaves with frost, UV-degrades, loses shape over time

Paver / stone edging

  • Lifespan: 25+ years (with proper base)
  • Best for: formal landscapes, integration with patio
  • Downside: labor-intensive install; requires excavation + base prep

Concrete poured edging

  • Lifespan: 25+ years
  • Best for: continuous curves, integration with hardscape, mow-strip applications
  • Downside: cracks if soil moves; non-removable

Tools

  • Sod cutter OR flat spade
  • Mason's line + spray paint for layout
  • Rubber mallet (steel + polymer edging install)
  • Driver / hammer drill (for stakes)
  • Sand or crushed-rock base material
  • Compactor (hand tamper or vibrating plate)
  • Level
  • Eye + foot protection

Procedure (steel or aluminum edging)

Step 1: Layout (45 - 90 minutes per typical bed)

  1. Stake the desired edge line with mason's line + paint.
  2. Verify the line is correct from multiple angles. Customer sign-off here is cheaper than redo later.
  3. Plan radius transitions; steel can curve to ~3 ft radius without preforming.
  4. Calculate length + factor 5 - 10% waste.

Step 2: Excavate

  1. Run sod cutter along the line to 4 - 5 inches depth + 4 inches wide.
  2. Remove sod + topsoil; reserve sod for patching if needed.
  3. Confirm depth allows top of edging 1/2 - 1 inch above grade (visible for mowing; below for invisible).
  4. Trench should be slightly wider than edging thickness for sand bed.

Step 3: Base

  1. Lay 1 inch of sand or crushed rock in the bottom of the trench.
  2. Level + compact lightly.
  3. For freeze-prone zones (USDA 4 - 6), increase base to 2 inches for drainage + frost movement.

Step 4: Install edging

  1. Place edging on the base. Connect lengths per manufacturer (overlap + stake hole alignment).
  2. Drive ground stakes through pre-punched holes per manufacturer spec - typically every 16 - 24 inches.
  3. Stakes should be flush with top of edging.
  4. Adjust height with rubber mallet from top - set top elevation consistently.
  5. Verify level lengthwise; small height variations are acceptable on grade changes.

Step 5: Backfill + finish

  1. Backfill lawn-side first; tamp lightly.
  2. Backfill bed-side with topsoil to match grade.
  3. Replace sod or seed as needed.
  4. Water in if seeding.
  5. Mulch the bed side to top edge of edging.

Paver edging variation

  1. Excavate to depth = paver + 4 inches base
  2. Base: 4 inches compacted crushed stone (3/4" minus typical)
  3. 1 inch leveling sand
  4. Set pavers tight; level top
  5. Restraint edge (polymer or aluminum) on lawn side
  6. Polymeric sand between pavers; sweep + water-activate

Common mistakes

  • Edging too high: catches mower wheels, customer complaints. Top should be 0.5 - 1 inch above adjacent grade for visibility, OR flush for mow-over.
  • Insufficient stakes: edging heaves out within one frost season. Follow manufacturer spec; in heavy clay or freeze zones, more stakes not fewer.
  • No base material: edging settles unevenly. Skipping base saves an hour + costs the entire job in year 2.
  • Wrong material for the application: polymer in northern freeze zones doesn't last. Steel in salt-spray coastal corrodes. Match material to environment.

The customer-visible quality of an edging job is in the CURVES + CORNERS. Straight runs hide imperfection; curves expose every misstep. Spend extra layout time on radii. For tight curves under 3 ft radius, score the back of steel edging every 4 - 6 inches with a grinder to allow easier bending. For corner returns, miter cuts look professional; overlap joints look amateur. Edges customer sees from the door of the house get the most attention.

Acceptance Criteria

  • Edging height consistent (within 1/4 inch over 8 ft runs)
  • Stakes flush with top
  • No gaps at joints
  • Backfill matches adjacent grade
  • Customer walks the install + signs
