Green-Up Uneven Only Where Spreader Overlapped Decision Tree

Why this matters

A lawn that greens up in dark stripes or grids matching the spreader path is the single most common callback on a fertilizer round. The pattern is diagnostic: it tells you the turf received a non-uniform dose, and the geometry of the dark areas points straight at the cause. Read it wrong and you re-treat the whole lawn (doubling cost and burn risk); read it right and you fix the spreader pattern, document the response so the customer sees it will even out, and avoid a chargeback. The stakes climb with quick-release nitrogen: heavy overlap stripes can cross from "darker green" into outright burn within 7 to 10 days.

Symptom presentation

The defining feature is that the dark turf maps to applicator behavior, not to soil, shade, or irrigation. Walk the lawn and look for one of three signatures:

  • Parallel dark stripes spaced at the spreader's effective swath width (typically 8 to 12 ft for a rotary, 18 to 24 in for a drop). Dark band on each pass edge means overlap; light gap down the center of each lane means under-throw.
  • A crosshatch grid: dark squares where two perpendicular passes overlapped, lighter elsewhere. This is the "double-pass perimeter plus single-pass interior" pattern.
  • Sharp dark lines along driveways and bed edges where the operator slowed or stopped without closing the hopper.

Color difference usually appears 7 to 14 days after a granular round on cool-season turf, faster in warm weather.

Quick checks

  1. Confirm timing. If less than 7 days post-application, the lawn is still responding; advise the customer to wait. Uneven response at day 3 is normal.
  2. Measure swath. Pace the dark-to-dark stripe spacing. If it equals the spreader's rated pattern width, the pattern is mechanical, not agronomic.
  3. Pull the application record. Check product, spread setting, and whether the tech ran a calibration check that day.
  4. Rule out irrigation overlap. Walk head spacing; a sprinkler double-coverage band can mimic fertilizer overlap but follows arc geometry, not straight mower-style lanes.

Isolation tree

Start at the pattern geometry.

  • Dark parallel stripes at full swath width -> operator did not overlap by the recommended one-third to one-half pattern width on a rotary, OR overlapped a full pattern on a drop. Rotary spreaders throw a feathered edge that must overlap; treating the throw width as the effective width leaves light center lanes. Branch: if light gaps run down lane centers, the operator spaced passes too wide. If dark bands run at lane edges, passes overlapped too much.
  • Crosshatch grid -> standard header-strip-plus-back-and-forth method applied the perimeter twice. Expected and usually self-corrects; only a concern with quick-release N.
  • Dark lines at hardscape edges -> hopper left open during turns, slowing, or stops. Granules pile where ground speed drops because rotary output is mass-per-time, not mass-per-area. Confirm by checking that lines sit at every turn point.
  • No geometric pattern, blotchy -> not a spreader issue. Re-route to soil, shade, thatch, or disease diagnosis.

Next, check rate. Read the spread setting against the product label's setting chart for that specific spreader model. A setting one notch high doubles edge-overlap severity. Verify the product is what the label setting assumes; a setting calibrated for a 0.46 lb N/M product applied to a denser prill flows differently.

Confirming diagnosis

Calibrate the spreader on the actual product. Catch output over a known area (catch-pan or weigh-back method): run the spreader over a measured 100 sq ft strip, collect or weigh the product applied, and compute lb of product per 1,000 sq ft. Compare to target. If the dark stripes received roughly twice the target rate while gaps received about half, overlap is confirmed quantitatively.

For burn suspicion, check the salt index of the product and the applied rate. Quick-release urea or ammonium sulfate at over 1.0 lb N/M in a single application, concentrated 2x in overlap bands, lands near or past the burn threshold, especially on dry soil or above 85 F.

Remediation

  • Cosmetic overlap (darker green, no burn): no chemical action. Irrigate to move nitrogen, and let the next mow and one more week even the color. Document with dated photos.
  • Light gaps starving the center lanes: spot-apply at half rate down the gaps to bring them up, rather than re-treating the whole lawn.
  • Burn in overlap bands: irrigate immediately with at least 0.5 in to leach salts. Do not re-fertilize burned areas. Reseed or sod once recovery stalls past 3 weeks.

Prevent recurrence: recalibrate to the product on the truck each season, set rotary overlap to one-half pattern width, close the hopper before every turn and stop, and run a header strip at each end so back-and-forth passes do not pile at turns.

Re-applying nitrogen to "fix" a color difference before the first round has fully expressed (under 14 days) stacks dose on top of dose in the overlap bands and is the leading cause of full-lawn fertilizer burn on callbacks. Confirm the lawn is not still responding before any second pass.
