Fairy Ring vs Dollar Spot vs Leaf Spot Decision Tree

Why this matters

Three of the most common cool-season disease calls produce visually similar patches that respond to entirely different chemistries and cultural fixes. Apply a generic broad-spectrum fungicide to fairy ring and the symptom returns in 14 days because the active never reached the hydrophobic mycelium zone. Apply a contact-only product to leaf spot in a humid week and the canopy collapses anyway. Apply nitrogen to dollar spot and it disappears for a season; apply nitrogen to leaf spot and it spreads. The diagnosis drives the chemistry, the chemistry drives the season's program, and the season's program drives whether the contract renews. A 4-minute disease ID at the truck gate beats a 4-call cycle of misapplied product.

Symptom presentation

Photograph the patch from above and at canopy level. Document patch diameter, color of the center, color and width of the ring or halo, presence of mushrooms, and a thumbnail check of the thatch under the affected area. Fairy ring presents as a green or brown circular band 6 inches to 30 feet in diameter, sometimes with mushrooms at the leading edge after rain, and a hydrophobic dry zone in the thatch just inside the band. Dollar spot presents as silver dollar to softball-sized tan patches with a slightly sunken canopy and bleached blade tips visible at 6 inches; early morning dew often shows white aerial mycelium around the patch margin. Leaf spot presents as small lesions on individual blades with concentric color rings, frequently coalescing into irregular tan patches without a defined edge.

Pull a tuft from the patch margin and examine blades with a magnifier. Dollar spot lesions are hourglass-shaped across the blade with a tan center and reddish-brown borders. Leaf spot lesions are oval with a dark border and a lighter center. Fairy ring rarely produces blade lesions; the symptom is at the soil and crown level.

Quick checks at the tailgate

Carry a soil probe and a refractometer-free moisture probe. Push the probe inside, on, and outside a fairy ring suspect band. A hydrophobic zone with visible white mycelium in the top inch of thatch and a moisture reading 30 to 60 percent lower than the surrounding soil confirms a fairy ring fungus is occupying the rhizosphere. Confirm dollar spot suspects by checking the historical nitrogen rate; dollar spot pressure climbs hard on under-fertilized turf and especially on tall fescue and bentgrass coming out of summer dormancy. Leaf spot suspects correlate with extended leaf wetness, low mow height, and recent thatch buildup; check the irrigation schedule for evening or night runs that leave the canopy wet overnight.

Isolation tree

Start with patch geometry. A defined circular ring or arc, especially with mushrooms or a hydrophobic core, is fairy ring until proven otherwise. A scattered field of small uniform-diameter tan spots with bleached blades is dollar spot. An irregular tan area without a defined edge, with individual blade lesions, is a leaf spot complex.

If the diagnosis is fairy ring, classify the type. Type I produces dead and water-repellent zones; type II produces a green stimulated band; type III produces only mushrooms. Type I needs aggressive cultural intervention to break the hydrophobic layer; type II often resolves with balanced fertility; type III is largely cosmetic.

If the diagnosis is dollar spot, confirm with a 12-hour dew check at sunrise; white aerial mycelium ringing the patch in dew is definitive. Pull the previous 90 days of nitrogen and check whether the lawn is under the 1 pound per 1000 square feet per growing month baseline for the species; under-feeding is the dominant amplifier.

If the diagnosis is leaf spot, confirm by streaking a few sample blades on a damp paper towel in a sealed bag overnight; sporulation visible the next morning under a 10x loupe supports the call. Pull the recent mow height log; cutting tall fescue below 3.5 inches or Kentucky bluegrass below 2.5 inches in summer heat amplifies leaf spot.

Confirming the call

When the in-field evidence does not converge on one of the three diagnoses, bag a sample and send to the state turf diagnostic lab. The standard fee schedule documented across multiple state extension programs in the 2024 publication year runs $50 to $100 USD per sample with 5 to 10 business day turnaround. The lab ID is the only defensible diagnosis when the customer disputes a treatment plan or a homeowners association demands documentation.

Remediation by branch

Fairy ring type I: aerate the affected band with a hollow tine, apply a soil surfactant labeled for turf, water deeply within 24 hours, then apply a labeled flutolanil or azoxystrobin product per the product label per FIFRA Section 12. Schedule a 14-day recheck and a second application if labeled. Do not apply additional nitrogen until the hydrophobic zone is rewetted.

Fairy ring type II: a balanced fertility program will often mask the green band. Customer education is the work product, not chemistry. Document the conversation.

Dollar spot: raise the mow height to the high end of the cultivar range, shift irrigation to early morning to break the dew window, increase nitrogen to the species-appropriate rate, and rotate a labeled DMI or SDHI fungicide per the product label and the IPM resistance management section. The chemical alone is insufficient; the fertility and irrigation moves prevent recurrence.

Leaf spot: raise the mow height immediately, suspend nitrogen during active infection because nitrogen amplifies leaf spot, shift irrigation to early morning, and apply a labeled fungicide containing chlorothalonil or a DMI or QoI as the label allows. A second application 14 days later is common; verify against the product label.

Resistance management on fungicide rotation is not optional. Repeated applications of the same FRAC group for the same disease on the same stand selects for resistant populations within two to three seasons. The FRAC code on the product label dictates rotation; the IPM standard adopted by every state extension service requires rotation between groups for sequential applications on the same disease pressure. Document the FRAC codes used in the customer record so the next season's program does not stack the same active.
