Edging and Trimming Best Practices
Why this matters
Edging and trimming are the two operations that distinguish a lawn-care company that the customer will pay 30 percent more than the competition. The mowing itself is commodity work - every operator with a Honda walk-behind produces approximately the same cut on healthy turf. The trim line around the foundation, the crisp edge along the driveway, the clean line around the mailbox post - these are visible from the curb and they're the customer's signature impression of the visit. Pricing the service to include disciplined edging and trimming, and executing them consistently, is the highest-leverage operational decision in a lawn-care business.
Edging vs. trimming - different tools, different jobs

The two tools are not interchangeable. A line trimmer used along a driveway produces a sloppy fringe; an edger used around a tree trunk is the wrong tool entirely. Each has a specific operational role.
Edging
When to edge
- Every visit on signature accounts (customers pay for the visible difference)
- Every other visit on standard accounts (efficiency tradeoff)
- After heavy growth or rain (the edge line creeps over the hardscape)
- New install or renovation (establish the line, then maintain)

Edging procedure
- Stand on the hardscape side of the edge line (the tool's wheel rides on the hardscape)
- Lower the blade into the existing edge line - ideally an established edge that has been maintained
- For new edges, the first cut establishes the line; subsequent visits maintain it
- Walk steadily, keeping the blade vertical and the wheel on the hardscape
- The blade cuts a vertical line about 1-2 inches deep, removing creeping grass that has crossed onto the hardscape
- Pass length: as long as the edge runs without break - don't lift the blade mid-pass
- Final blow-off removes the cut grass + soil from the hardscape
Edging height
- New edge: 2 inches deep, establishing the line
- Maintenance edge: 1 inch deep, removing the creep
- Edges deeper than 2 inches expose dirt and look sloppy; the goal is a clean line, not a trench
Edge maintenance over the season
Established edges drift outward over the season as the lawn grows over. Maintenance edging restores the original line. After 3-4 seasons of maintenance edging, some edges have crept 4-6 inches into the lawn - periodically re-cut to the original line at a renovation visit.

When to trim
- Every visit, after mowing, before edging and blowing
- Trim addresses areas the mower deck cannot reach

Straight-shaft trimmers reach into tight spots a curved-shaft cannot. Most professional crews carry straight-shaft as the daily driver and a curved-shaft as backup.
Trimming procedure
- Start with the string at the same height as the mower deck
- Approach each obstacle systematically:
- Trees: 1-2 inch clearance from trunk. NEVER strike the trunk with the string
- Mailbox / fence posts: trim flush, leaving no grass standing higher than the surrounding cut
- Foundation: trim along the foundation line, leaving 1 inch clearance from the siding (string against siding scuffs paint)
- Bed edges: trim along the established bed edge. If edging was performed, the trim is already done at that interface
- Irrigation heads: identify and avoid. String against an irrigation head shears the head off - costly repair
- AC condensers / utility boxes: trim around but don't strike. Sun damage on plastic compounds with every strike
- Hold the trimmer at a slight angle so the cutting tip strikes the grass, not the structure
- Move the trimmer in smooth, controlled passes - don't whip
- After trimming each section, glance back to verify height matches mower deck
Tree trunk protection
The single most common landscape damage from lawn-care crews is trimmer-string scarring on tree trunks. The damage:
- Cuts through bark, severing the cambium layer
- The tree's vascular system is interrupted around the trunk
- Over 2-3 seasons, the tree declines and may die
- The customer will not connect the death to your crew, but you'll lose the account in retrospect when they remodel and pay for tree replacement
Solutions:
- Train every crew member to maintain at least 1 inch clearance from any trunk
- Install mulch rings (a 2-foot diameter ring of mulch around each tree base) so the mower and trimmer never approach the trunk
- Sell mulch ring installation as a separate service to customers with vulnerable trees

Match the line gauge to the trimmer's recommended range. Heavier line in an undersized trimmer overworks the motor and breaks more often.
Common patterns
Pattern A: Mow → Trim → Edge → Blow
- Mow the open turf
- Trim around obstacles
- Edge the hardscape
- Blow off all hardscape and beds
This is the standard pattern for most residential visits. It minimizes the number of times the crew walks the property.
Pattern B: Trim → Mow → Edge → Blow
- Trim around obstacles first
- Mow second
- Edge third
- Blow last
Used when the lawn is overgrown - trimming first creates a defined edge for the mower to follow.
